Topic: Organic vs. Synthetic

This is in response mainly to dreamosis' "hoochie mamas" post. I understand this all too well as I have always had a wicked aversion to the bar scene.
Only recently could I put my finger on why. I could simplify it using "organic vs. synthetic"
Consumerism has become a religion in its own right- and just looking in people's driveways proves their strong adherence to dogma.
In my experience it is these folk- the Joneses- who have the least regard for the depth of human emotion.
I wish not to stereotype- but we all know this is a real phenomenon.
Growing up we are surrounded by plastic.... the Synthetic.
The old saying "you are what you eat" comes to mind.
Or, we eventually come to resemble the things we place value upon.
Maybe this is vague- this is just my way of thinking.
Picture the 11 year old playing his Xbox staring endlessly into a polystyrene encased life-sucker.
Has he ever smelled a rose?
Appreciated a gorgeous sunset?
Chances are, no.
Is that his fault? Or is he preoccupied with the world he has come to know.......
Now i'd like to try a little reversal.
We can try and understand some of what goes on in these plastic minds perhaps.
Is that woman over by the pool table looking at YOU thinking
"wow, what a souled human being"
"I can see a warmth in his eyes- a conscience that I am aware I do not have"
"I'd like to go over there and mess with his head for awhile- drag him down to my level"
"Maybe show some more cleavage and bulldoze his pesky intellectualism"
It's not an us and them argument.
But I will not deny for a second there is something missing there.
It does seem like a one way street.
Organic=the aware
Synthetic= the unaware
I know it's in reality a much more complex question, and I do agree with montalk that it may be possible to increase one's awareness and others have probably over the years declined in their awareness- I'd call that apathy.
Yoa are judged by the company you keep- and in some respects you are only as good as the company you keep.
Maybe dreamosis needs to coerce his wife to a place he knows she'd be less comfortable in order to make his point- sorry not trying to get personal ;-)
I do believe alot of ourselves hinges on who we spend time wih and where we spend time...........

Re: Organic vs. Synthetic

Everything about a human these days is a product to sell, even their personality and soul.  People are fake, act the way they think they can sell themselves.  Liking certain things, being certain ways, these things are usually manufactured, even if the person liking a certain thing or being a certain way doesn't actually admit or consciously tell themselves this, but they know they are just trying to convince everybody into thinking they are what they are trying to present themselves as.  Supply and demand.  Even the people, usually young, that rebel against the system are usually trying to demonstrate their value by offering a different product.  It's a way to stand out, like an advertisement.  The synthetic, consumer society has permeated the human being, and, indeed, it does come off as distasteful.

* Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
* People want platitudes, not progress.

...I actually tried that--with okay results.

One day my wife returned home from work and began "venting."  She had not been getting on with her boss very well, and re-hashing nasty events of the workplace is a habit of hers.  I do it, too, every now and again, but--at the time she had this job--it was every other day for an hour or more she was doing this.

I had decided that it (her venting) was a negative holding pattern and I decided that I would coerce her into breaking it...

That particular day I was in a great mood.  I had been relaxing, writing, walking along the lake, and meditating.  When she walked in, and began complaining, I was...just amused.  Amused that she was still taking her boss personally and couldn't let it go.  I was amused and I laughed.

She noticed me laughing and asked me what was funny.  I told her she was funny.  Then I asked her if she wanted to feel frustrated, angry, intimidated and unhappy.  She said she didn't.  So I suggested she not feel that way anymore.

She said she couldn't switch gears just like that.

I suggested she could if she wanted to.

...During all this, I was really very amused and laughing out loud.  I had decided, and I told her expressly, that I had no intention of giving up my good mood.

She took offense to that and called me egotistic, since I clearly only cared about my feelings and not hers.

I countered that I did care about her feelings and didn't want her to feel bad feelings and that's why I was holding my positive level (which, I felt, I really truly was).

Long story short, she stormed out of the apartment, slamming the door on the way out, being as--as I see it--I had created a space unsupportable of negative emotion.

She returned a few hours later and apologized, though, saying of course she didn't want to feel crummy, but...(Well, negative emotion is addicting isn't it?)  And from there on out she did gain more of an emotional "seniority" at work.  And became aware of her venting and stopped it--actually, we mutually agreed on a time-limit of twenty minutes. smile  The time limit helped, too.  With a time limit, instead of walking circles, she aimed for resolution.

...I've tried this type of "coercion" several times now.  I'd say it's fifty percent effective.

My wife is emotionally volatile.  And she knows it.  She almost never shows her underbelly to anyone but me--which, I think, both endears me to her and makes her (ego) resent me very much.   I say "volatile," because when she does show her underbelly, it's all the way--she breaks down.

She's an emotional type.  I'm an intellectual type.  I do feel my way through problems, but a break down for me is usually purging.  For her the breakdown is shameful.  She's a bit of a perfectionist (from a rich WASP family of over-achievers).  For her to admit that there is a problem means a major emotional, "shameful" breakdown.

It's created a weird dynamic for me on my path.

I don't have to coerce her into less comfortable spaces; being around her, being who I am and she being who she is, she's made uncomfortable (as am I, oftentimes).

...Sometimes it feels like her emotional self never grew up, like she's only emotionally ten years old.  Her emotions own her, she doesn't own her emotions.  And that's probably when she suppresses them.  I've seen her consciously choose her attitudes before, but it seems to take a monumental effort for her to do that.  For me, it's difficult, but doable--so it's hard to empathize.

...Sometimes I do look at her like a "slow-poke."

but you can avoid its teeth.

Re: Organic vs. Synthetic

dreamosis-  i said I wasn't trying to get personal lol. No- that is some excellent strategy
And your phrase "negative holding pattern" sums it up PRECISELY.
When i used to get really angry at things- I had no concept of loosh at the time, mind you- It did feel as though energy was leaving my core.
The anger is one aspect I have been in nearly full control of for a number of years now-
All I suppose changed there was simply telling myself it is not worth expending energy on.
Venting about the work situation has to be second only to $ as the source of so much tension in relationships and friendships alike. Something all of us can work on.<>

Re: Organic vs. Synthetic

I do agree, Haven. They do know they are being fake- so there is some awareness there- a matter of degrees i guess?

Re: Organic vs. Synthetic

All this discussion about fakery brought to mind a song by Fear Factory- "corporate cloning"---

A clone force mass produced
    simulate, introduce
delinquent, rank and file
incodent, stamped and styled

     ill affected progeny
    tasteless iconography

A half-life in the line
  industry, by design
PLASTIC thughts in my mind
thus begins my demise

This year's model dims and fades
last year's model is erased

  prototype by design
  prototype, stand in line!

Life and sex share a mind
deviance is a crime
another fading idol, another fallen icon

Sometimes I wish I was deaf and blind...
