Topic: Life at the hotel
Well, starting back in February I got back into working in hotels again........I left the industry back in '97 to go work in offices because offices have better pay (MUCH better pay...) and also, I couldn't deal with the rude people throwing fits anymore.
If I had to grade myself on how I handled that aspect of the job, I would have to give myself a big "F".
I'd get all riled up inside, fuming, and would let it affect the rest of my day. I'd go in circles in my head about how nasty and awful people can be, why they're like that, what's wrong with them, how can they BE that way.....etc.
So this year I decided that I needed to "test myself" to see if I learned anything at all from reading all that spiritual material over the past 2 years, and hotels was the perfect place to do it. I'd mostly been reading the Toltec material - Theun Mares and Carlos Casteneda, as well as Stuart Wilde, who has many beliefs which mirror the Toltec way. It's all about learning to control one's emotions and reactions, learning to become detached from reality and seeing it for what it is versus being embedded in the illusion, among a bezillion other aspects to Toltec-ism. (is that a word?? haha) From Stuart Wilde I also picked up on the idea of learning to understand why people act badly, and not hating humanity.....something that I can definitely say I've slipped into. I have compassion for certain things when it comes to people, but overall have a disdain for people. I admit it, I can't help it, I've just seen too much negativity with humanity. I'd rather pal around with animals any day then people! It's not that I have contempt for people that I talk to face to face or anything like that.....for them I find that I do have compassion and / or understanding for their situation. Or if I read about travesties happening to individuals, (usually on Rense....aka travesty central...) then I have understanding and compassion as well. So dealing with people one-on-one, individually isn't an issue, it's just when I hear stuff regarding humanity as a whole.....that's where I lack sympathy.
So with that said, I found myself getting back into hotels a couple of months ago, and it's been interesting, that's for sure. What a difference in my views and reactions versus years ago. ! I even set up a grading system to grade myself, cause I'm just weird like that.
It defines where I aim to be. I went into this already at a D instead of an F, just because of all the reading and learning I've done over the past 2 years. So I was already in a better place then back in 1997. In two months I've moved up to a C, where I've been holding steady, unable to get to a B....but slowly working my way there. My goal is to get to a point where no matter what crappy stuff people are saying or doing, it just rolls off me, and I'm completely unaffected. And not because I'm suppressing anything, but because I truly see past all of this and understand the nature of why people act as they do. I'm defintely not there yet...I still get miffed, like "What a jerk........." or "Reign in that ego of yours, buddy!" or "If that's the worst thing you can complain about then you should be thankful!" You know...
Regarding disdain for people.......Stuart Wilde talks about trying to love people / humanity despite their flaws..........I honestly and truly don't think I can or will ever get to that point, but he does go on to say that if you can't accomplish that then at LEAST try to get to a point of neutrality. So that's my goal! Be neutral!
I was wondering if anybody else out there has ever done anything like this, or can relate to what I'm talking about....?
