Topic: Deep-fried Mars bars

And I thought it was one of those "urban myths". Perhaps it started out that way, when some drunken reveller suggested deep-frying a Mars bar,and now some sugar barons are reaping the profits.  Sweet and deadly; like Ascension, i can only eat real chocolate like Lindt and a few other old European brands.

Deep-fried Mars bar taking Scotland by storm

PARIS (AFP) - The deep-fried Mars bar, a nutritionist's nightmare that surfaced in Scotland about a decade ago, is now an established part of the Scottish culinary scene, according to a letter published in The Lancet.

Dipped in batter and then cooked in hot oil, the Mars bar is now on sale in more than a fifth of Scotland's 627 fish-and-chip shops, it says.

The average sale is 23 bars per shop per week, but some shops say they sell up to 200 a week, it records.

The deep-fried Mars bar first surfaced in news reports in 1995, reputedly originating in the eastern city of Aberdeen.

Promoters of Scottish tourism -- aghast at this damage to their efforts to highlight Scotland's history, culture and landscape -- joined with middle-class foodies in deriding the DFMB as media hype.

But this is untrue, say authors David Morrison and Mark Pettigrew of the Greater Glasgow NHS Board, who contend the snack is "deep and crisp and eaten."

"Scotland's deep-fried Mars bar is not just an urban myth," they say.

Health experts have condemned the deep-fried Mars bar as an artery-clogging catastrophe.

Scotland is already ranked as the country with the highest rate of chronic heart disease in Western Europe, a position that owes itself to cigarettes and alcohol as well as a poor diet and a love of sugary foods.

Critics should take heart, though.

The Mediterranean diet is penetrating into Scotland, "albeit in the form of deep-fried pizza," say Morrison and Pettigrew.

Pizza is one of several items that customers have asked shops to deep-fry, along with bananas, pineapple rings and creme eggs, a highly sweet confectionery.

The letter is published next Saturday's issue of the British medical weekly.

Mmmmm Lindt.

Yup, Liam Neeson confirmed this in the early 90's on a late night show.

They eat haggis!  I am sure deep fried dog turd would be more healthy than that...

Re: Deep-fried Mars bars

You know what though, and we were just talking about this over here on my end, but people eat stuff everyday that's just as bad as a deep fried candy bar.

Think about it -  How many here ever eat fast food?   All those cookies, crackers, margarine, mayonaise, salad dressings, sauces, etc. that we consume that contains **partially hydrogenated soybean oil** sometimes disguised as partially hydrogenated "vegetable" oil.   Same thing.    Do people even realize how BAD that is for us???  It's not digestable!!   Guess what happens to it over time???

Gallstones.   Little greenish yellow pus bile balls accumulated in your gall bladder.   They estimate that 90% of the population has at least a few gallstones but don't show symptoms of it and don't realize it.

And think about it.   People don't usually bat an eye at the idea of eating a candy bar and French Fries from your favorite fast food joint.  But combine the two....deep fried candy bar......and suddenly that's different!   wink   It's the same thing when you think about it.....

Re: Deep-fried Mars bars

I read about a guy that visited Iceland & after 3 weeks noticed he felt a whole lot better. he wondered what was behind it.  The air, the water. He figured out that the soil is very pure over there as no pesticides or chemicals have ever been used. therefore the soil is the same as it would have been 500 yrs ago. the vegetables had way more mineral value. He then developed a digestive enzime pill derived from the Icelandic veggies.

Re: Deep-fried Mars bars

Alrightie then--

My mate and I went to the FL State Fair the other day and he just had to have one of those deep fried candy bars, a Snickers. I wanted to see what all the hullabaloo was about and tried a very small bite... it was as icky as I thought it would be. While they were frying it after he ordered it I made a comment that I was surprised they didn't sell pint sized cartons of milk to go with it. She said no that they didn't sell milk, but she had watched many a person with the confection and a big glass of beer, going back and forth between the two... GACK! LOL! That's alcohol abuse if ever I've heard big_smile! (joke)

About 3/4 of the way through the candy bar my mate was regretting he bought it in the first place... he had nothing to drink with it!

It's just my opinion, but if you haven't tasted one of these things you're missing nothing wink .

That's quite a paradox when you consider that the Scots' first favourite food was porridge - and oats are known to reduce cholesterol in the blood!  tongue

Re: Deep-fried Mars bars

Hi Cipher,

Just to correct possible misconceptions; the quote is from the New Scotsman newspaper, although I happen to sense the the assertion is true.

Indeed it is a paradox regarding the health of the Scottish nation. Hundreds of years of occupation by England is the key to understanding how the traditional diet became subsumed by the STS motivated sugar barons and addiction merchants that are more concerned with profit than health.

The same pattern can be found all over the globe where the populus are alientated from their natural environment and access to knowledge that kept their ancestors more healthy than they currently are. America is alsa a case in point in this regard. Perhaps the most glaring example, as espoused in the Super-Size me film. Obesity rates are number one in the world in the USA, followed interestingly enough by South Africa, after its 3 centuries long subjugation by a conglomerate of European nations. All lessons.
