"I, Robot" is based on the Asimov book...but you're right, the plot seems identical to one of the Animatrix cartoons.
And oddly enough, the music in the trailer sounds like Neodaemmerung from "Matrix Revolutions".
For a moment I thought this movie was directed by the Wachowskis, but it's actually directed by Alex Proyas who did Dark City, which is interesting as Dark City and Matrix both deal with essentially the same subject.
Could there be a conscious collaboration among some in the creative arts to bring certain concepts to mass awareness?
It's probable that certain forces would take interest in influencing the minds of those who influence the minds of the masses. I know of three different sources that claim this:
1) Courtney Brown in the book "Cosmic Voyages" wrote that Gene Rodenberry was heavily influenced by alien forces, who inspired in him numerous themes for Star Trek episodes. (I don't have the book on hand to quote from).
2) The C's mentioned the same idea:

And Richard Shaver, the guy who started the "Shaver Mystery" and claimed to have communicated with subterranean beings called Deros, said this:
"You really think people will have computers in their homes?" I [author of article linked below] said. "Anyway, if the Deros wanted to control people through technology, why not use what's already in every home in America -- television?"
"It's already begun!" he said. "Look at that Star Trek program! Remember those baddies who would kidnap people, take 'em to an underground lair and show 'em holograms of family picnics to keep 'em under control? Roddenberry called 'em Talosians. Deros, Talosians, same thing!"

But as for the Wachowskis, I don't think they were unconscious of the source of their inspirations. I think they knew exactly what they were doing. If you read their (phony) biography and study up on how they prepared and executed the Matrix trilogy, it seems they were acting on a tightly pre-arranged agenda and followed the "orders" precisely.
Perhaps Alex Proyas is involved as well, because Dark City was absolutely stuffed with symbolism and clues concerning the "matrix" reality we live in.
Should mention that it's uncanny that The Matrix, The Thirteenth Floor, Dark City, and eXistenZ all came out within a year of each other. All this points to "Project Awaken" being a real thing.
Acquiring fringe knowledge is like digging for diamonds in a mine field.
Obviously these programs are not trying to prepare us for something as drastic as an alien invasion, but at least they are making people think, and maybe realise just how much we are currently taking our current stability for granted.
