Noble Realms → Conspiracy → Marketing plan for future Internet nightmare
An interesting piece of multimedia artwork and speculation. The concept of the "grid" is right on, something like that is bound to evolve from current technologies. What I'm most interested in seeing is how information unfavorable to The Powers That Be is controlled. We already know that Google practices censorship based on unrevealed criteria. We're also already seeing Big Business working hand in hand with national law enforcement agencies to crush technologies and communication protocols that threaten their financial interests (just a week ago several major search engines for BitTorrent -- a protocol that allows people to share multimedia -- went offline permanently due to legal pressure). Napster was another obvious case.
I think the important point is not that people are illegally sharing music and movies. What is important is that modern technology allows individual citizens to become publishers and news sources. While most people can't afford to offer audio and video content due to bandwidth charges, these new protocols allow it to happen by spreading the bandwidth around amongst all users. Perhaps this won't be an issue in the future when many of us get fiber-optic connections. Technology moves so fast that it's really difficult to predict. We need to stay on guard and aware of how strongly corporate entities influence legislation. It's already a horrific state of affairs and seems certain to get a lot worse before it gets better.
I think you're to optimistic Morningsun76 when you named the speed
of technology.
Everything is monitored, and I think the scope of information (not just bytes) we are allowed to see is shrinking at a very fast speed.
i.e. see the differences between CNN and BBC in world news cases.
People are talking about an information explosion caused by digital techniques;
Yes, it seems to be at first sight, but from now on we got just more bytes (not information).
And Google (& Altavista etc.) censuring the search engines is just the beginning.
Search software is programmed to neglect "forbidden" combinations and associations by Fuzzy Logic algoritms.
That's why giving valid sources on hot subjects are getting much more difficult.
The here named internet nightmare will also expand to everything what is connected in a digital or electronic way.
So, ultimately the internet is making people much more stupid instead of smarter

Without question. Sooner or later there will be a crackdown on the current free structure of the internet itself.

For now, though, we have access to all sorts of great stuff. This forum, for one, independent uncensored news sources, and so forth. The other day I was downloading videos put up by some Iraqi resistance people. I may not have a drop of sympathy for them, but it's cool to be able to see videos that my own country's media won't allow to be shown.

Scary, no doubt.

I haven't noticed that yet. Example?
So, ultimately the internet is making people much more stupid instead of smarter
I don't see any reason to think this. So far I see it having the opposite effect.
I've had a news alert setup in google for the word "ufo" for a while. The idea is anytime a story with "ufo" appears in the media, I am supposed to sent an email alert with a link to the story. I thought I'd be flooded with a bunch of stories, but I only recieve an alert email every other day or so and even then it is usually only related to some product launch such as ufo shaped toy or something, very rarely is it a story of a sighting or whatever.
This could be partly due to newspapers not covering much but I would think there would be some smaller newspapers that would occasionally run stories of sightings and such (that google search is supposed to detect and report) that I should be recieving much more than I do.

Morningsun76,
These days you are still able to enjoy the internet at full respect, but I think
it's not for a very long time, until you think what so are seeing is always truthfull.
Let's hope the available hot information will be free for a long time and .. accessable.
Who controls the communication protocols, does control the communication.
Interesting use of the "lucifer light" effect.
That internet nightmare isn´t a nightmare, is an act of freedom, don´t?. Inclusively, that report could be done by those descripted in.
Who to trust?.
