Topic: Scientific theories on "Consciousness"

It's always amazed me how Science refutes the concept of "consciousness".  There really seems to be a genuine fear around the subject.

Recently I have discussed the concept of consciousness and its affect on reality (or that it is reality) with a number of people.  And their reaction have shown that they suddenly see something they hadn't realised before - but it undermines their belief system, so attempt to reject it.

Anyway, its interesting to see how science is slowly catching onto the whole idea with Quantum Physics and neurology etc.

In that vein I came across this article today; which is a little old, but still quite interesting:

Re: Scientific theories on "Consciousness"

Hi Marcus,

Consciousness.....there's so much to talk about with this subject!   Including souls and genetics.    Hope I'm not wandering too much astray by mentioning those two aspects.  Recently I came across an article, maybe in Time, or Newsweek, about a woman who paid $50,000 to have her deceased 17 year old cat cloned.  The laboratory presented her with the kitten clone, which had all the identical physical characteristics of the first....including behavioral traits.  The first thing the kitten did when it spent time with the woman was to crawl onto her head...same as the clone "parent" had done as a kitten.  It also has the same fondness for playing in water, which is unusual for cats.

I read this and immediately thought...my god....how much of us is really conscious, really souled, and how much is just genetics and biology???   !!!  ahhh!  What if all we are is a product of everyone that came together before us to contribute their genetics??? What if we're not really as individual, souled or conscious as we'd like to think????

That's of course going slightly astray from the main point which seems to be strictly about self awareness, and the brain processing and interpreting and piecing together input from outside stimulous to formulate a picture of "reality".   But I think it's related.  Once you start talking about how the brain works, and how much of our perception and consciousness is really just the brain doin' its thing, then that leads to the subject of psychology, and the way that they've got the ability to predict and analyze behavioral responses down to a science....which can lead to the next thing which is genetics, and how much of our personalities, temperments, likes, dislikes, food preferences, etc. is just genetically inherited, (call to mind all the studies done on twins.....)  which leads to environmental influences and how much of who we are is the result of parenting, friends, culture, and the time period we live in..........................it's overwhelming.  I know it makes me want to just put a pillow over my head and hide.   !  big_smile big_smile  Like my god.....There is no "me", I'm  just a bunch of neurons firing with a body and personality that is completely the result of inherited genetic traits and environmental influences!!! ahhh!!

Or are we...?   !

Re: Scientific theories on "Consciousness"

Well I don't think you are straying from the subject at all.  Although the article is specific, I don't think the idea of consciousness can be specific at all; as you illustrate it delves into many areas.

I think the problem science / people have with consciousness is that they relate it to our five-sense physical world responces.  And whilst the brain may react within that realm, I don't believe mind does.

I don't know if you have ever experienced an etheric or astral body yourself, but it is significantly different to the normal body.

We can clone animals and see the same "personality" traits.  But without being an animal we have no concept of their sense of "self".  What is their consciousness, what is their awareness.  Do they have a "ghost in the machine"?  Compairing humans to animals requires a hell of a lot of assumption due to the unknowns.  Whilst not compairing is perhaps presumptuious and arrogant.

That again though illustrates the limitations of scientific methods.

Going beyond that, just from a quantum standpoint alone; atoms and nucleus phase in and out of existance.  Further at a basic level, "information" from these components cascade both backwards and forwards in time.  Admitidly a lot of it is still theory; but then there are experiments that show one object in two places at one time.  And there are experiments of one particle reacting to another particle that isn't even near each other...indicating that "information" transmits from one point to the other without covering the interveaning space.

Whilst there is a lot of unkown stuff here; what is does show is how limited in scope every current scientific method is.

Science seems to deal with the known, the quantifiable etc.  Newton's book on gravity (I forget its name and paraphrase) begins with the quote:  "This book concentraits on the mathmatics only, and does not concern itself with the nature and attributes of the objects themselves."

In short Newton knew that mathmatics and science alone wasn't sufficient enough to expain somethings true nature.  And even though Newton said that...the conventional interpritation of his "Laws" ignores that statement.

The problem is...how do we quantify the unquantifiable?  How do we separate the five-sense world, from the non-physical world.  There are too many experiences and aspects that science cannot explain in any way at all...

I think it's quite right to feel that our "me" is largely constructed from genetics and other physical and psycological attributes.  But, that doesn't mean there isn't a line between this physical aspect and a non physical aspect.

The "truth" is more likely that our beings are composed of both the phyiscal as well as the non-physical.  Reason and science just have a problem with accepting that.

Re: Scientific theories on "Consciousness"

Or maybe we've just gotten it backwards.
http://www.soulwise.net/26e-rap.htm

In the universe there is only Mind, there is only Consciousness, there is only mental activity or movement. The trouble is that when we live in an energy-field that we have called our physical body - we are deluded into thinking that something is happening "outside" of this energy-field or our body. The body fools us. In other words, we self-create a "within" and a "without" when we live in this body - while in actuality there are no such things. There is only One Thing! It is Mind or Consciousness. We live in this Mind and we are it. It's all there is! That's why we have always been. We are an aspect piece of mind of the Infinite One. We are an event within this Mind...

Further, we all have individual perceptions and they are mental happenings that take place within an Energy Field we have called our Soul or Mental Being. Did you get that Sister Soul? We are our Soul and our Soul is this Energy Field!  Mental phenomena or movements take place in our Soul or Energy Field. Also, the energy structure we experience as our body is not a physical thing. It is also an energy-field and we as a Soul are living in the energy-field we call our body. We as a Soul only live there until the body dies. We must understand here that we do not live in a matter body - we live in an energy-field - but we call it our physical body...

We do not live in a matter body or matter world, matter is a form of mental energy, it is a form of Mind. There is no matter body and therefore there is no Matter World! The world is a mental construction in our awareness or imagination - but we have accepted it as a real physical thing. It is not a real physical thing or planet in actuality. It is only real because we live in our body. Our body is a lens or a translator that creates a reality of an assumed material actuality. The actuality however does not exist! The whole conundrum is so beautiful and complicated that it staggers the human mind to no end. Millions of scientists completely miss the point. They think that they are investigating physical reality, but in actuality, they are investigating an illusion. This illusion is their own own self created phantom reality...

All human beings have individual and different mental energy constructions of their so called matter world and we call them our perceptions of our environment. Naturally, our perceptions are based on what goes on around us. What goes on around us are movements of the Universal Mental Energy in which we all live and have our being. All our experiences within this matter world are and look so real that it fools us continually and continuously. We ourselves create its realness by means of our body. We create our physical reality in the same manner as we create the realness of the shows on TV or on the movie screen. There are no moving pictures on TV or in the movie! All are still pictures that our awareness system perceives as moving sceneries...

The physical world is a mental construction that is projected upon the screen of our awareness or mind. The matter world is a self-created reality in our mind. It's a delusion! We all live in our own self-created delusionary or phantom world. We created this illusionary world in our mind by means of the energy-impressions we received and have called our perceptions. No one knows what perceptions others have and no one knows in what kind of illusionary worlds others live. Do you understand now Sister Soul, how ridiculous it is to go "out there" and fix the world? Fixing a physical world is impossible. There is no such thing as "out there". We cannot fix the perceptions others have from which they create their world. The world exist in our mind only. It's not a Physical Reality. It's like fixing a dream! At most we can fix our own understanding of what the world is. Once we have done that and know - we can just sit back and laugh...

Re: Scientific theories on "Consciousness"

Not at home at the moment; so didn't say all I wanted to in the last post.

I also wanted to comment on some of the information you presented Lyra, which is interesting.  But it's neat because it is very challenging to a "spiritual" way of thinking.  And highlights how even here there is a polarisation of thoughts.

Part of me when reading that was saying "No we are more than just genetics!!"

I think there is as much fear in people; for them to accepting we are nothing more than our building blocks, as there is from people saying we are more than we can measure.

Rudolf Steiner examined this - and made interesting ideas on the whole issue...

Sure have!  But not until recently, within the last 4 years or so. The first incident that I remember was 2000 -  In the middle of the night I "woke up" (was still out of it and half conscious) and felt that I was hovering up by the ceiling, just......hovering up there, lalala!  while my physical body was down below in bed.  It was TRIPPY!   Then nothing happened again after that until 2002 and into 2003 when I had several experiences with being out of my body, although not "astral travel" per se.  I've always been dead set against actual astral "travel".  It's something that my Dad, my Brother, my Dad's mom, and others on his side of the family can do -- and do often.  (hmm...inherited genetic ability.....)    My dad for years tried to get me to open up to that and give it a whirl, and I was always like HELL NO.  ABSOLUTELY NOT.   You couldn't pay me enough money to do that.    ! It's not that I'm "Scared" of it....I just instinctively have always known, since I was a kid, not to do it, ever.   It's bad news, and a lot of trouble.    Like my brother once said, (confirming my bad feeling about it)....Sometimes people don't come back.   But that's another topic for another thread.    But to answer your question, I have indeed experienced the astral body, have some interesting tales, and if it weren't for those experiences, and other experiences which can only be described as "soul related", then I could easily go back to being an Atheist who believes we are just a hunk of meat with firing neurons, end of story.   One example -  I saw my Grandmother in Southern California the night that she died...3,000 miles away.  I was at work and had no idea she was dead.  I hadn't seen her in 2 years.   But there she was.  Found out several days later she had died.  So, thank god for my experiences which have shown me something else!   smile  We're definitely not just the sum of our physical parts, and "consciousness" continues, even after death, I have seen it for myself.

You know....the animals question is an interesting one indeed.

For instance.....

I have a really awesome wonderful cool kitty.  She's all black, with gold green eyes, and has THE coolest personality of ANY cat I have ever dealt with.  She's smart, friendly, affectionate, talkative, agile and energetic and active -  she doesn't just pounce after balls, she's been known to LEAP and TWIRL and do 180 degree spins in mid air!!! -  and in some ways almost acts like a small dog, because she responds to her name, and has learned the vocal meanings of many English phrases.   So there I was, thinking my cat was SO unique and SO wonderful....then I found a book at Barnes and Noble back in 2001 that showed different cat breeds.  Turns out my cat is what's known as a "Bombay."   (google it....any picture of a Bombay is pretty much identical to what my kitty looks like! )   And it listed the 4 major traits of a Bombay -  Intelligent, sociable, talkative and athletic.

That's my cat!

Then I began meeting other black cat owners and listening to their stories.

Their cats were all like mine!

My cat isn't unique at all!

AHHHH!   big_smile big_smile

This really through me into a tailspin for a bit, wondering whether my cat really DID have any sort of unique consciousness about her whatsoever, especially considering that her "Personality" is just a set of inherited genetic traits built into her breed.

sad  !!!!!!

Even more crazy is that I know that had she been raised by anyone else, she would have a very different personality.  I've had a hand in cultivating her "cool" personality, making sure to treat her respectfully, always talking to her, lavishing her with attention and hugs, feeding her kick ass food, not ripping out her claws or having her female insides butchered.  Etc.   As a result, she's super alert, happy, affectionate and always has to be involved in anything going on in the apartment.

So, who is the "real" kitty then??   I have since concluded that of course she has a unique consciousness, and while her genetics and environment have shaped who she is, there's still individual consciousness there.  In fact, so much so that I've often commented that my cat is MORE conscious and alert then many PEOPLE I've known!!!!   How about THAT, eh??   smile

And the same can be said about people.....who is the real "us" ?

I know that had I been raised differently, I would have turned out different in terms of personality.  But my core likes and dislikes, talents and aversions would remain the same.  (genetics?)  My reactions probably just as predictable as the next person's. (psychology?)

So where does the soul come into play in shaping our consciousness?

I think our soul is just a blob of energy, to put it simply.  But it does have consciousness all its own....whatever lessons you learn in one incarnation carry over to the next.   Also, when outside the physical body there's still a sense of self awareness and self identity / ego.

ANYway, this is getting long, so, I'll end it here.  Just random thoughts!

Re: Scientific theories on "Consciousness"

I read an excellent book that bridges spirituality with science - called "The self-aware universe - how consciousness creates the material universe" by Amit Goswami.

The ideas also links with another book, the holohraphic universe by M. Talbot.

At a personal level, I have had many lucid experiences and awakenings that also back up these books.  (sorry this isn't meant to be an advertisment I know it sounds like one!)

Cheers

Re: Scientific theories on "Consciousness"

I have heard other people mention M. Talbot; so I suspect it will be worth getting hold of a copy.

Lyra, I was talking about that very same subject with a friend of mine yesterday.  We were discussing the possible outcomes of creating an exact "clone" of a human - including copying all memories and the like.  Would then the two people be identical in every way - both physical and non-physical.  Or would there possibly be something "missing" from the copy...

Interesting to speculate on...

Re: Scientific theories on "Consciousness"

The physical aspect would be the same, but the non-physical aspect would no doubt be different. A different soul, or a different fragment of consciousness. Unless the original incarnating soul returned into the new body, it would be impossible to create an exact clone for that reason. To an outside observer, however, it would no doubt be impossible to tell the difference except -- perhaps -- for slight variations in personality.
