Topic: Hindsight + Foresight = Survival

hello friends.

upon pondering the fate of mankind, i came up with a theory.
it is a simple theory that calculates the chance of survival of a civilisation.

let me breifly explain:

the past shows us that every so often, certain events happen that SHAKE all life on the planet- drastically lowering the population, and causing great catastrophe across the globe. it is recorded in the "bible" - known as the great flood. other ancient texts describe very similar events, cataclysmic events.

this is what i mean when i say "hindsight"
Hindsight equals the ability to look BACKWARD into the past at events that may in fact REPEAT. ( ' history repeats itself ' )

BUT- looking alone at the past isn't hardly enough!

We must also look FORWARD into the future if we want to survive.
This is what i mean by FORESIGHT.
Foresight equals the ability, through technology, to be able to peer into the cosmos (future) and to detect any cataclysmic event before it actually happens. to see it before its coming. to PREDICT.

so, in essence- Hindsight (realizing the past) plus Foresight (predicting the future) equals Survival  (using both knowledge and technology to ensure some people make it)

i wrote this a while back, wondering what people here think of it ?

Re: Hindsight + Foresight = Survival

True statement.  For those smart enough to keep it in mind, at least.

For the other 95% percent of the human race, I think a different quote applies:

"We learn from history that we do not learn from history." - Hegel

Re: Hindsight + Foresight = Survival

haha, thats a good one.

u know, looking back at this, my theory seems a bit trivial. but maybe thats exactly how it should look, now that i've grown (matured) more in this sense.

reflection is always good to see how youve changed etc.

Re: Hindsight + Foresight = Survival

As ALF once said...those who fail to learn from the past are destined to repeat it.

This is not a trivial theory, we live it day to day with each problem we face since the only thing consistent in each problem we face in our life is ourselves. So if we don't learn from our experiences we can't plan for a better outcome.

In the ER we have a sign that says,

Good judgement comes from experience.
Experience comes from surviving bad judgement.

T-Ren, I wouldn't take any advice from an Alien Life Form who eats cats.

Re: Hindsight + Foresight = Survival

They taste just like chicken, it just takes longer to pluck all the little hairs. A LOT of work for so little meat...kinda like crab legs.

Just kidding.

Sorry to all cat lovers for the poor humour but I too am a cat lover.

But I digress. Learning from one's mistakes is the best way to learn: It has been said that an expert is somebody who has made every possible mistake in a narrow field.
