Lyra, let's not make major decisions based on any apocalyptic prophecies. I've heard of people who quit their jobs and moved to woods years ago. By now they have finished up their canned food supplies that were thought for the hard times and start selling now their bags of 90% silver coins thought for bartering because they run out of money.

I think you may have misunderstood me here.  When I said "The trick is to imagine that we're in apocolyptic times, civilization has crumbled, we have no electricity and computers...."    what I was trying to do was illustrate a point about how most of the companies / industries that exist in this country right now are illusory and useless.  The best way to illustrate that is to take something out of the context in which we normally see it and place it in another.   Taking all those industries that seem normal to us, like debt consolidation, mortgages, law firms, homeowners association management companies, etc. and imagining their place in a world gone awry suddenly makes it glaringly obvious how useless they would be then.......which shows how useless they actually are now, even if many can't currently see it because right now everything is stable.    So don't worry, not making decisions based on apocolyptic prophesies.  I was just using a fictitious apocolyptic scenario to show our world in a new context.   Hope that's more clear.   smile

I agree with you on the phony business of many companies and their illusionary concepts. Does it change anything for us personally as long as we do what we really enjoy? I mean, the cleaning woman, the facility manager, the programmer, the EVP at JP Morgan - what does the company make a difference as long as they enjoy what they're doing?

You know what, and I'd hedge money on this, but I don't think most of those people truly enjoy what they do.  Most people aren't doing what they enjoy.  Most people are working because they have to, at jobs they don't much care for, in industries they accidentally fell into which don't match their college degrees or weren't something they ever intentionlly planned on, because that's who happened to hire them when they needed work.   Truly, this is what I have seen out there.  "Accident" is the main word, falling into a career or an industry accidentally, not caring much for it but just sticking with it because it's safe and it's steady money.   It's the story of my life and it's the story of so many coworkers I've known at many companies in 4 states.

The whole job thing is just so fascinating when you think about it.  The whole accidental thing which I was just talking about, the fact that people job hop like mad nowadays, companies hire and fire like a merry go round, there's no loyalty, everything is nuts.   People's resumes are like a circus!

Even crazier is pulling back from the whole thing even farther and viewing it all as one would in a higher density where there is no such thing as work.   It doesn't exist there.  Now imagine what these job and work setups in 3rd look like to those in other realms.  THAT'S trippy to imagine....: "Wait...so let me get this straight.....you get up early every day even though you're still tired and need sleep and you force yourself to drive to this building where you sit in front of a computer typing up boring shit that is completely irrelevent to you, just so you can get a piece of paper that you trade in for other pieces of paper???  Say what???"    "Wait so let me get this straight....you make yourself get up early to go wait outside in the morning in the freezing cold in the dark waiting for this thing called a public bus where you cram yourself between scary smelly people so you can be brought to a building downtown where you do things you don't like to do so you can continue to eat??  Huh??  I don't think people in your 3rd density had to do that hundreds of years ago to survive....so why do you do it now?  What the hell changed???"   Must be confusing to those in other realms looking at us!  big_smile   Makes it hard to keep getting up and going to work in the morning, no matter what you do or how much you might think you enjoy it!

Having temped a bunch in my twenties, I can attest to the work scene she describes.
As chaotic as it is, temping at a variety of companies (which I did) gives you a good overview of the kinds of insanity and unhappiness and cutthroat inanity ( as opposed to purposeful cutthroaterry!) going on...and it's only gotten worse. I worked for lawfirms, marketing companies, and all sorts of corporate companies in and around Boston. One common point among them all was the lack of a purpose that truly would matter, even in a bottom line sense, of their various frenetic activities. Alot of paper shuffling, employee shuffling, huffy storm-outs, and the unmentioned most common one: whoever left couldn't stand their job and so they had to hire temps to do what no one else would do. Probably because it was so inane. I swear most of them probably lost money, but "this is the way things are done around here."

I think what Lyra is trying to point out is that many or our jobs, like many things in our throwaway society, superflous paper shuffling jobs, where more energy, money and time are spent on excessive paperwork or computerwork than is needed to feed a small country, practically. And for what?

Jobs which have a purpose to YOU and thus others who benefit from your right-livlihood are the only jobs that actually CREATE something of value, that DO something. Whether paid or not, this is the case. So...might as well figure out a way to make money at it...right?

You summed it up so well Sedna....In my previous posts I chose to leave out the whole rant about what specific things I've encountered at jobs over the past 7 years, but that's it right there, what you wrote.  I swear, we could have been working for the same companies!!    There was a lawfirm I temped at for 1 month back this February - March and it was EXACTLY like you described.  It was the most INANE JOB I have ever seen.   I HATED it.  Inane, inane, inane. Stupid, retarded mindless paper shuffling!!!!   Pointless, useless job.    Absolutely loathed going there.  I was literally counting down the days until it was over and the kicker was........they LOVED ME.  They were BEGGING me to stay there permanently because JUST like you said....temps do the work that NOBODY else wants to do.   I was the office wench who did all the miscellaneous work, filling in for the "law clerk" who was out getting gastric bypass surgery.  But I didn't do any "law clerk" level stuff, it was all mindless stuff.  Point being that the "clerk" title means nothing.    I had no law background and was able to do the job with no problem.   Anyway, they desparately needed paralegals and lawclerks and were willing to train, no prior experience necessary, and there I was, the fresh faced newbie temp.  Oh come here little tempie tempie.....come here......!    Everybody was BURIED in paperwork, their desks were a mess of papers and binders, with storage boxes at their feet filled with reams and reams of paper and more binders and folders.  The clerks and paralegals worked no less than 10 hours a day, every day, and the head paralegal was always complaining about the job, talking about how it was "abuse" what they were doing to their employees......as she turned around and tried to convince me with everything she had to take the job and sign on!!!  Misery loves company!!   I hated that job, and ran for the hills.  No way in hell I'd work there full time.   They tried EVERY tactic they could think of though to lure me in, mostly the $$$$ angle.   Oh, I'd be making ALL this money if I worked there....the head paralegal made $60K last year she whispered to me, nodding.  Trying to insinuate that I could make $60K too.  Please, get real, I wouldn't be making $60K, I'd be making $10 an hour doing crap work that everybody else pawned off on to me, because that's exactly what I'd been doing for 4 weeks.   HORRIBLE job.  Bad environment too.  blach!   Everybody was unhappy and the lawyers were a bunch of....um....well....you know.  I'm just so glad I didn't take it.

Exactly.  Now I just have to figure out what it is.   Writing is what keeps coming to mind, and it's what I wanted to do since I was 10 years old.  I think I'll have to maybe think about getting back into that again.

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

OK everybody, I've been thinking about what I said last night and I've had a few interesting thoughts.

What I want to do is take a smallish group of people to a private forum on my server and dump my knowledge on to them about how to make money on the internet. And there's not going to be just one method, I'll be talking about several different methods, so there should be something that's suitable for everyone regardless of your technical knowledge or experience.

I really don't want to take more than about 20 people so right now this offer is only open to people who have posted on this forum during the last few months that I've been around. However, if this proves to be successful and I have the time, then maybe I'll take another group of people a few months from now. That's if there's more people interested of course.

If you're interested then please email me by clicking my name on the left and I'll send you details of where you can sign up.

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

This is an intriguing topic for me.

I have already started to look at alternative job status. I work "power weekends" I get paid more per hour for giving up my weekends. I see it as me getting paid to be able to follow my own pursuits.

And until recently I had thought all was peachy until I tricked myself into seeing the corporate ladder and trying to climb it. The ladder got taken away so to speak and I had to reexamine how I do my job.

My side pursuits are things along this sites line and business and investing.

What I didn't realize is that business and investing is also much like this site says life is. Learn the rules and don't seek to make new rules but rise above the rules and work within the realm of the rules.

Most people and myself included don't know what the rules are. They just see the "rich, greedy bastards" keep getting rich, while the "poor working" man stays poor.

That is not always the case. You can say when you have enough and work while not compromising your integrity and morals. you can realise that creating jobs can be STO.

Just some thoughts.

Peace,
Teddy

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

Ok, I'm back.  I had to take the weekend off from any serious thinking.  smile  I was getting too stressed.  I haven't really researched the virtual assistants per se.  I have just seen some on a business networking site, I am on.  So, I know it can be done, and I have every confidence that Lyra would be able to create a successful business with it.  I have done a lot of research into MLMs, especially which one are scams. One major company, Excel, just declared bankrupcy.  So, even the good ones are not  always stable.  It is a good idea to have multiple sources of income.  Affiliate marketing is another avenue of income.  Basically, you promote someone else's product on your website and/or ezine.   Then there is eBay, of course, which is turning into its own business model!  There are old models which could be reworked, like cooperatives or guilds. With the economy looking like it is about to take a serious nove dive, it is probably a good idea just to experiment and come up with our own business models.  MLM, for example, was largely started by Avon and Mary Kay to provide alternative income for women.  The creative minds on this site should be able to come up with even better models!

A good place to check for scams is the "Bad Business Bureau" at http://www.ripoffreport.com .  This is for any type of scam, not just MLM.  I also sometimes just do a search with the companies or person's name and "scam".

Hey Kathy,

I've emailed you about 3 times this weekend about joining my forum. Did you not get any of them?

Several other people have not replied either. I think the Reptilians are f*cking with my email. Zonabi, Palulukon, Mimi and T-Ren I've emailed you guys too. Please write me if you haven't received anything from me.

Sorry Andy,
This weekend was a family, clean-the-house, keep-it-personal weekend.  I found your letters just now, but we seem to have a problem with email being delayed.  And the link you sent did not work sad .  I'll try it again later.  We'll figure it out!  Your idea sounds good.

Not a problem,

Maybe "they" really don't like things when you want to create a "mastermind group" that's already focussed on STO.

I got both e-mails when I got up this afternoon.

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

In the long run, it seems the best thing to do would be to learn how to become self-sufficient. Once you learn that, you can teach other people how to do it. They're going to need that kind of knowledge when the system crashes. You can then get paid for your expertise while at the same time helping people.

I think there will be money to be made in teaching people how to grow food in the typical suburban backyard, how to save seeds, how to raise and slaughter small animals like chickens and rabbits, how to preserve food, how to make biodiesel, how to purify water, and so on. Even if a crash never occurs, the system is still going to keep squeezing people. They're going to start dropping out eventually.

It’s not really a crisis for me, but I do feel more of a sense of urgency than in the past - not wanting to waste the remainder of my lifetime here.  It’s partly because of age. I’m 51.  Sometimes when I notice my receding hairline or a new skin wrinkle I think to myself, Hey guy it’s time to get on with it.

I don’t see my office job as the burden that I used to.  I see it more as an opportunity to learn how to enjoy the Now and how to be of service.

Our main work or contribution isn’t necessarily what we do in exchange for currency.

One challenge I like working on is to try to approach the goal of having jobs that are so enjoyable I would probably be doing them even if I wasn’t getting paid.  For me, playing and teaching trombone come pretty close to that - I just need to make it grow more.

Absolutely! That's what everyone should be aiming for, although few people are for some reason. I guess most people don't believe it's possible, or that it will ever happen to them (Matrix conditioning I guess). But if you're getting paid for something you'd be doing even if you weren't getting paid, then it's not really a job is it? More a labor of love.

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

Hi all,

Jerryf25 once mentioned before on another thread called Jobs/Work about the whole dilemma of trying to change / adapt oneself to fit into a pre-existing job mold....I just figured out tonight that THAT'S one of my major crisis points I'm having.   Tonight when I stopped and analyzed what the problem was that I've been having at all these job interviews I've been going on (3 last week, 3 this week) I realized that at all these jobs I have to be "fake."  I can't be myself.  I have to adjust myself to fit the interviewer and what they want.   There's tension on my end after the interview because things don't "fit."  Then, I would be working in these quiet small offices where, as the new person, the spotlight would be on me, people would be wanting to know all about me and getting into my personal business, they'd be watching me, analyzing me, observing me, scrutinizing me.  I can't deal with that.  These people I've been interviewing with have just been so WEIRD.   To me, anyway.  It's a gross mismatch.   I think it's this particular area where I'm living.  It's left me longing for jobs I've had in the past where I could just go in, do my job, and not have all the spotlight scrutiny on me.   I've had a few like that in the past, it was nice.   Where everybody is too busy doing their own thing to be involved in my business.  Where I could be myself, feel relaxed, and not have a spotlight on me.

Anyway.  Just some thoughts about the whole job crisis thing.  If nothing else, it's helped me formulate in my mind what I want and don't want now.  Before I didn't know what I wanted, so I couldn't make any requests.  It's also motivated me to keep looking for alternate ways to earn an income.   Something outside of a tick tock office job. I know there has to be a way to do it.

Another thing I wanted to comment on which relates to stuff that's been talked about here and elsewhere is the idea of making money from doing what you love.   But here's the dilemma I'm facing -

1.  I don't believe in charging people money for anything spiritual related.  Books, articles, personal consultation, you name it.  I am deadset against it and for me it's flat out morally wrong.  You don't charge for spiritual knowledge and insight, that's absolute crap b.s.   To me.   Only in 3rd density is there such a thing as charging people money for information and spiritual knowledge and insight.   If someone offered me money to put my writing skills to use to write spiritual/metaphysical stuff and get paid for it.....Hell no.   I've always said that I wouldn't/couldn't do it.

2.  Putting my writing skills to use to write fiction or other non-spiritual fiction to make $$$....I don't know.  Let me say that I was **thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis** close to going down that road, had completed what was technically my second book back in August, September of 2001, had the manuscript, had the forms to fill out for getting a copyright, was scouring for agents......then September 11th happened.   Suddenly that book seemed pretty damn stupid and ridiculous.   3 years of work, shelved in one day.  Instantly kicked aside.  There was no way I could in good conscience even attempt to get it published.  It's silly trivial fiction, and it no longer mattered after 9/11.  Other authors have had NO problem getting their silly, trivial fiction published since that time, but I'm not one of them.   I mean, save a tree, hanh?!?!?    ?!?!?!?

And like I've mentioned most jobs / careers strike me as being silly, stupid or illusory.  Or all of the above.

So, what a quandary, indeed.   !

So for now I'm pondering other non-fiction or "faction"  (factual "fiction") writing ideas, something that wouldn't be trivial and stupid, something that would actually affect people and educate people.  Something that's unique and hasn't been done.

We'll see.....

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

Hey Lyra,

With ya on the job issue to some degree. In the present job I have as an ER nurse, I have been working as a charge nurse. It has not been an official position in the past, but our present director wants to make it an official position now. I had been working it for about 2 years already, never had any complaints, never had the director talk to me about any lackings. She and our educator both asked me on a couple of occasions to apply for the charge nurse position. So I did...got turned down. Told I needed work on prioritizing and problem solving. Yet a brand new grad can do the job that I have been doing and I have 8 years experience in addition. And per her words I'm liked by everybody and was the only one who even read on anything this past year to improve leadership.

Now this director "sows" confusion in a lot of what she expects/does and because of that she was used to teach me a deeper spiritual lesson....Don't take life personally, it is full of experiences you get to choose if it is going to be a blessing or a curse and if I am going to be a blessing or a curse.

I agree with you on the writing of spiritual matter. But there is printing and S/H costs, so no matter how trivial your other writing is, seriously consider using that to support the funding of your spiritual/ metaphysical material. life is still going on for most other people relatively unchanged.

Of course most people this day and age think that if it is free it is worthless. So you could consider a "free-will" offering let them place the value on it for either what it is worth or what they can afford.

Peace,
Teddy

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

Hi T-ren,

Well, I think there is bigger meaning to all things, including the job dramas and crisises.  When things don't work out then there's a message, something to be learned;  maybe it's a sign or a nudge trying to point us in a different direction.  Maybe there is something bigger to be gleaned from it all, that silver lining in the cloud.  I know there's something bigger going on with my job drama.  I'm at a crossroads in life.  I'm trying to see the bigger picture, see if something's trying to tell me something, point me in a new direction, I don't know.

On a sidenote, just thought I'd throw this in there because it's interesting, but when I tried to meditate on this whole matter and connect to my higher self, you know, like picking up the cosmic phone and giving it a ring wink get some feedback, advise, words of widsom, what have you,  wouldn't you know it but our neighbors upstairs picked that EXACT MOMENT to put on the ho-down fiddle music.  Just havin' themselves a ho-down barn dance fiddle fest up there, right at that moment.  Their CD player / livingroom is situated literally, smack over my bed.  Right as I started, they flipped the switch.   Washed that idea down the drain.  Without ear plugs I wasn't going to be meditating any time soon.

Go figure......
