Topic: Fess up...how often do you lie?

Titmouse had a wonderful post.....so come on...add it up.......Just how often is it?

I think we need a slightly different scale.....

1) I lied to keep from being embarrassed .... lied to keep from being caught

2) I lied to get ahead

3)  I lied as a part of day to day activities

4) I lied out of habit.

Do you lie at all? Why?

C'mon...do you do 20% of these 50% of the time? Maybe you do 70% only 10% of the time?

I mentioned on the original thread ( poll by titmouse ) that this topic was of great interest to me. I ponder the concept of honesty often. Although i understand the general thrust of the question, i could not answer it accurately to my satisfaction. Perhaps i am just overcomplicating things but i find it scratches the surface of some complex underlying ....perceptions, assumptions etc.

I would greatly appreciate it if readers could perhaps define what they believe a " lie " to be?

Not intending to hijack the thread but it does seem relevant. Anyway i am new to these forums so am busy reading through trying to see if you touched upon this subject elsewhere previously. Keep getting sidetracked though as there is lots of fun reading to be had wink

Actually no....in my eyes there is no overcomplification at all. Either you tell the truth, the whole truth, or you don't. Everything else is a deception and therefore a lie.

If you don't wish to tell the whole truth for whatever reason, then you say nothing at all.

That is your privelege. Mind you, it may cost you a job or even more than that.

So, knowing this...do you tell the truth no matter what it may cost or do you lie?

Or do you simply arrange your affairs so that the truth will never cause you any problems?

Is it worth it? You betcha....the whole universe flows with you if you're able to pull it off.

    You didn't answer the question. Let's say answering "yes" to all the questions earned you a big fat zero. Answering "no" earned you a 100. Then factor in how consitently you answered them, good or bad.

What's your score? I can honestly say I score 98% truthful answers probably 95% of the time over the last 10 years. Not perfect but damned respectable I think.

Mind you I don't work in a corporate environment, don't have to answer to anyone, and generally am a bit antisocial so I don't get a lot of sheeple interaction. When I do they tend to get offended, but, I spoke the truth.

Like I said...arranging your affairs....

Well there you go.

Alot depends on your situation.

Do you think you could say the same (about not lying much) if you were a car salesman? Or better yet, a used car salesman?

I'd venture to say no.

Liars by trade, sorry if any of you happen to fall into the category.

I can say personally my own 'need' to lie has decreased sharply over the years, not so much because of a conscious effort on my part to be "more honest", but merely because of circumstances.

Like yourself, I have chosen the company of OP's much less than I would have in the past, alot of that is due to my own recognizance of the fact that they are such.

I also must throw in, these 'multiple choice' 'tests' are offputting to many people besides me, for the simple reason that it feels like interrogation, which is more than ironic in a thread such as this!

Honesty is virtuous, I cannot disagree with that, virtues are also, by nature, more difficult for some to achieve than others.

If lying leaves you with strong feelings of guilt, then it would be advisable for that person to work on it.

If not, don't worry too much about it, just my opinion.

And I apologize for not answering directly, I am/have been all of the above.

The approach of percentages is always the best way to evaluate, IMO.  People who lie on a regular basis must have justifications. Any excuse is usually good enough with questions like these--there is intrinsically some evil on the part of the accuser, and an honest answer is not usually needed to discover truth in these types of matters. Responses are often prepared. The question is more important than the answer, I find. Each soul has free will. Each soul has lessons to learn. Truth is a journey; not everyone is at the same level, and truth has much to do with paradigms. Intent is more to the root of the issue. Silence is often complicity to some extent. Covertness is the liar's veil, as is scapegoating; so in the case of an agent (trade) one can usually deduce who paid to maintain the image of impeccability.


I have been on a journey of truth since I was young. I have gained great insights and wisdom along my path. I believe the "lie" is like a virus. People get sick. I have compassion for ill people; I hope they get well.

I can tell you the times I have lied....and I can tell you the few people who have appreciated my honesty. The percentage is low in regards to any rewards. It seems those proficient at lying feel that they have won--where I feel I thought I did them a service, with respect. Many people are not comfortable with public discussion of issues that get to the root of society's sicknesses.  I am greatful for the years I've spent being myself. My path  hasn't been easy or well compensated, nor the well traveled path, but it has heart.
