Limited release is right! It's not playing here where we live. (Charlottesville, Virgina.) I'm determined though, and went online and checked all the theaters for Richmond, an hour away. Nothing! Now I'm stubborn, dammit....Let's check Maryland. Washington D.C. Delaware. I mean, this could be cool you know, go see a movie....have a cross country road trip.....haha, but I didn't find anything. nada.
Oh well. If anybody in the VA/MD/DE/D.C. area knows where this movie is playing, let me know. I would drive out of sheer stubborness and persistence, just because "THEY!" have tried to withhold it from me. ![]()

Linklater On A Scanner Darkly: "It's The World We're Living In"
Surveillance, war on drugs and terror themes parallel realityAcclaimed director Richard Linklater, also currently turning heads for his comments on the Bush administration, joined GCN radio host Alex Jones for a discussion on the deeper aspects of the motivations behind A Scanner Darkly and the message it is intended to broadcast.
The film, starring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downy Jnr, Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder, is enjoying rave reviews as it slowly rolls out across the country.
"On one level it can't really help be seen as a social critique - too much thought has gone into it for people not to see that whole side of it," said Linklater.
The movie emphasizes the effects of suffocating surveillance and how this interferes with the character's very notions of identity and reality.
"The things I get out of it I can only attribute to Philip K. Dick (on whose book the film is based) - deep metaphorical ideas - just the notion of identity and privacy - they're deep ideas that resonate," said Linklater (pictured below).
"Even if they don't totally understand the movie they get the basic message about this future world - it's set seven years in the future - where people are under surveillance all the time, your calls are being tapped, all your actions are monitored."
Parallels to modern day developments have been noted in all the major reviews of the film and it is usually the favorite topic of the media during Scanner press conferences.
"Even though its technically a science fiction movie - we're living in science fiction right now," Linklater told Jones.
Linklater said he imagined Philip K. Dick laughing at him from beyond the grave when he received a mailed ticket a week later for going through a yellow light after being photographed by a number plate recognition camera and that this incident was one of the catalytic elements for some of the autonomous surveillance themes in the film.
"What's the next step - you cross the street at night and you get a ticket for jaywalking because biometrically it can read who you are?" said the director.
Linklater outlined how the surveillance themes are more of an overlay on the film rather than a focal point, because the story is set in a groove whereby society has become conditioned to accept that real privacy no longer exits
"There's not a lot of resistance we see going on anywhere - people adapt pretty easily to this - it seems like a nightmarish scenario but it's presented in a pretty normal fashion - so that got people thinking 'oh gosh we're just sheep being led' - this conditioning works eventually."
The film is brought to life by the eerie musical score of Austin composer Graham Reynolds - who also featured on Alex Jones' TerrorStorm documentary.
Linklater said that the original Philip K. Dick book and the movie are a tribute in memoriam to friends that Dick had lost to drugs and this also resonated with the producers and cast.
"This is really about right now - it's easy to imagine a future where the endless unwinnable drug war would sort of meld in with the endless unwinnable war on terror - and how governments and corporations profiteer and the effects of that on the individual - the numbing effects," said Linklater.
"So it's this huge cautionary tale on a lot of levels."
Linklater also credited Alex Jones, who appears in a cameo role and also did consulting for the film, for providing material that the producers and cast used to bounce off.
"I'd been giving out your videos to everybody - it informed everything we were doing so it was definitely the world we were living in," said the director of the upcoming Fast Food Nation.
Linklater said the film was his contribution to the wider underlying resistance that is building against the gradual erosion of freedom in western society.
"We definitely felt like we got away with something, just to be even able to put this out there in the world felt like a triumph of some kind - within the movie itself there's this kind of very subtle resistance going on beneath the surface - in a way you feel that way yourself you're sort of commenting on the current climate and what's going on in the world in your own way you have to fight against it," said Linklater.
Linklater heralded Philip K. Dick as a visionary who was leaps and bounds ahead of his time.
"It's funny how Philip K. Dick could imagine some of this stuff thirty years ago and he was a crackpot - he was a paranoid conspiracy person from the margins to be laughed at - that plus a generation equals reality."
"It's the world we're living in."
Thought some of this was interesting - especially the part where Linklater marvels at the fact that he "got away with something, just to be even able to put this out there in the world...." It ties back into my thread about the new John Lennon movie, where I asked the forum, Why would this be *allowed* out there now? Why are they just allowed to openly discuss the idea that the U.S. government had John Lennon assasinated?
The consensus seemed to be: Because nobody cares. The general public just looks at it and shrugs and goes back about their business. Oh well. What can we do anyway. Who cares. Next!
Which ties into Linklater's other comment that, "There's not a lot of resistance we see going on anywhere - people adapt pretty easily to this...."
Anyway, just thought I'd post this. When you click on the Prison Planet link, there are other interesting links concerning the film at the end of the article.

Well I believe, as I'm sure alot of people here do, that we are at the beginning of the 2nd half of the end game.
The bit where the majority of the control is pretty much in place, but the system needs to be deliberately pulled down..........to create the chaos.......that gives the excuse for the "ultimate answer".
I believe this is why the US forces are being stretched needlessly. Whilst all these foreign troops that are keeping the pilot light on, in what appear to be concentration camps on home soil are growing in numbers.
Another example is mainstream news publishing the notorious pictures of US troops posing with dead / nearly dead tortured iraqi victims. There is NO WAY those pics would have been released to the public 5 years ago.
Basically, its time for the masses to turn against the puppets, in ignorance of the real manipulators.
I'm actually in Fairfax, VA right now and I JUST saw a commercial for it about 20 minutes ago but I didn't catch what it said about showing in theaters around here lol. I'm heading back to florida today anyways and I know it will be out in my area tomorrow (in florida). I looked at the list for July 14th local releases and it's a pretty long list so it could be released somewhere in VA tomorrow.
On a side note, I mean its obvious and I'm preaching to the choir here but people generally have taken for granted for what this country is about. I could rant on about it but we all know. I remember this quote I think it's Ben Franklin something along the lines of Those who would give up liberty for security deserve neither liberty nor securty. It's obvious the forefathers were on the ball about liberty, freedom and free thinking. Quotes like that are a dime a dozen from them becuase they recognized how serious it is/was. I like the quote of the movie though "everything is not going to be ok"; basically it's time to take responsability.
I've been looking foward to this movie, but of course, it is not playing anywhere around here. Why is it being viewed only in select cities? Toronto is carrying it. Maybe it will be released everywhere on some later date.
We all know that now is the time to get our acts together, and although sometimes - as frustrating as it may seem - when people really do not care, and turn away from the truth is only because the are scared! While I was watching a Micheal Tsarion he said "everyone always wants light, BUT they are afraid of what the light might reveal".
Most have a build up of crap that they would rather ignore than face, and this is what keeps them - sometimes willingly - in the darkness of ignorace. So until that one person wants to look at themselves, they won't be able to stop reading the papers, turning off the T.V, taking action to become a non-consumer and so on. What can we do about it? Next to nothing in my opinion, but we can give them information and then let them choose. We should give as much as we can but stay away from the imposing of ideas and truths that we may deem true.
Sure the situation might not look good, or maybe the situation is looking amazing, I really don't know - but as long as you know who you are, then nothing can stop you from living the truth - which means having fun.

Or maybe the control system's control is not complete.
It could B that we have friends who intervene just enough to maintain the option of free will - without violating free will; or it could B that we ourselves create opportunities non-linearly by choosing to wake up again and again and again...or maybe both. ![]()
I was kind of disapointed because Radiohead was asked to do the score for this, but they turned it down. I think they would have added an interesting element. As far as no one caring about the realease of this movie, we care. The same it probably has been released on a limited scale because they want to test the waters to see if the movie will open peoples eyes. If they released the movie everywhere at once and it people started to realize hey something scary is going on here. If people react to it as, oh it's just a movie, it won't happen in real life then it will probably see full release.
I saw A Scanner Darkly last night and I was impressed and entertained. Philip Dick was way ahead of his time. Amazingly so.
I recommend this movie.
Maybe they didn't do the score, but there are several Radiohead songs in the movie - including a good one that plays while the credits roll.
The movie is coming to additional theaters on July 14. See link:

i work with some of the animators of this movie, it looks absolutely amazing. it is a shame that it is not publicized very well... but what would ya expect from a movie like this?
one thing the guys tell me, is how strangely enough the complexity and confusion of this Plot leaked out of the film/book and into the actual production of it. Lots of minds clashing and such... kinda hard to explain but interesting nonetheless
Hi all just saw the flick and it was somthing to go see. The only unique perspective I would have about it would be my conceivable reason for the special type of animation 'overlay' effect. Has any other movie ever done this? interpolated rotoscoping? First thing I thought of was it could be a more effective way of administering subliminal messaging into the psiche.
. . it did have a few of the quickly 'swooshing' flash screen scenes . . I hate that. And then there's the obvious element of desensitization or dehumanization in the general theme of the story but even with a few of the more suble scenes - Alex Jones getting carted off by the 'ringleaders' and the fast-forewarded porno scene on the surveillance monitor.
Other than that the plot and storyline were great. Even the ending had something in store to throw you for a bit of a loop.
Definitely a must see.
