SEATTLE (AP) - If the skies are clear as forecast, volcano watchers who turn out for the reopening of the Johnston Ridge Observatory on Friday will get a spectacular view of a hulking slab of rock that's rapidly growing in Mount St. Helens' crater.

It's jutting up from one of seven lobes of fresh volcanic rock that have been pushing their way through the surface of the crater since October 2004.

The fin-shaped mass is about 300 feet tall and growing 4 feet to 5 feet a day, said Dan Dzurisin, a geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey. ...con't

Wow!!!!!!!

Not a wonder considering all the activity the past couple of years in the ring of fire area.......Hmmmmmm

Have been keeping up to date on the USGS maps and it doesn't look too pretty.  California coast looks like one big chippy ritz cracker  sad

On another note, a few years ago happened to have lunch with a most likely MILAB person (high ranking, up for full bird or general, currently being groomed for politics).  Anyways, tongue and cheek I mentioned how the ring of fire area has been activated.  Well, he gave me this really creepy stare and just stared at me like WTF-How did you know?  Just laughed it off and said something silly like family being somewhat fey Irish.  BTW, his wife has the most ususual eyes, reptillian like and a weird energy to boot as well.  They're not together anymore last I heard.

Anyways, it well be interesting to see the geological activities in the following months to come.
