Hello NRers, I'm hoping that one or more of you might have some solutions to hip dysplasia for my dog. She's 5 years old, medium size Chow/Norweigan Elk Hound mix and recently is showing signs of hip dysplasia -- difficulty after a medium run in the woods. Today she refused to even climb up one step. I've already got her on glucosamine but am hopefully that someone here might have some other alternative solutions. Thanks very much.

Hip dysplasia is a form of of scurvy. Vit. C is recommended for this. Continue with the Glucosamine. However, different studies have shown Glucosamine Hydrochlorate (sp?) combined with Chondroitan Sulfate, in addition to MSM and omega 3 fatty acids is the most effective treatment for joint problems. I would add proteolytic enzymes to the mix for inflammation and pain. They are also excellent catalysts for healing and nutrient absorbtion. You will see quick results from these supplements, with either some or all of them. All is ideal, but whatever is in your budget with time and money.
Oh, I would also recommend switching over from commercial foods in any way possible to home prepared meals. Do a search on dangers of commercial pet foods and you will see what I mean.
Thook, thank you so much. She is on Evo which is all natural, no grain food. But, I'll work on switching too. Also, would you recommend Flax Seed Oil -- Barleans makes a "highest lignan" which is terrifc for humans. ( I think it's high in omega 3s) Any thoughts for dogs?

I might add some magnetic therapy to that mix, if you don't mind. My girls (of canine persuasion) respond quite nicely to it. It tends to assist in the ionization and hence utilization of essential minerals.
My kitty sleeps in one particular spot on my bed, right over where I have some magnets placed under the mattress.
The bigger the better (magnets, that is). Size does matter in this respect, and is much preferred to Gauss rating. I'd recommend at least a two inch by three inch Ceramic 8 magnet (four by six is preferable), magnetized through the thickness (poles are located on the large surface areas). Also, you'll want the "North" pole of the magnet facing the affected area (this is the pole that attracts the North end of a compass needle).

You could also treat your dog's water with magnets. It becomes so much more beneficial for your buddies.

Another thing that might help is a purple positive energy plate. You could put one under where the dog sleeps. These help alot to energise the dog, I've noticed miracluous healings with people, I'm sure a dog could benefit greatly from them too.

Therapeutic touch, and lotsa kissies on the head for starters 
Learned therapeutic touch during nursing education very early on. One doesn't actually "touch" the living being, but rather gently strokes slightly above the entirety of the body and after awhile you can sense and focus on what "needs" to be done, or specific spots that have endured trauma. Kinda like a soothing and comforting treatment modiality, with a feeling as to exactly where very precise areas of inbalance are readily detected. When these exact areas have been identified, it is helpful to get conformation-but with a pet you don't have the benefit of human "word" communication. Anyways, after these spots have been identified imagine breathing deeply in and out while keeping mind chatter absent. After a few clearing in and out breaths, imagine a heat/fire exuding from your fingertips and continue with the gentle sweeping over the affected area. It is important to ground oneself before this procedure, I find it helpful to visualize a root going to mother earth and a clear waterfall pouring through the top the head-I do this step beforehand several times. It's OK to actually touch, but for myself it is easier to pick up on the variations of energy fluctuations just above the surface. After sweeping over the affected areas, visualize or physically sweep away non-accordant energy and intuitively smooth it out. Give yourself enogh time and imput from the one being worked upon. It is also helpful to pay attention to the breath process, and "sweeping away" of "crooked" energy flows. This process is rather difficult to convey in words as it is a largely "feeling" process. If one or more practitioners are working on the head area, pay special attention, it may cause extreme dizziness or discomfort to the patient. Important to do the breathing and focusing with "non-chatter" stuff.

Omega 3 sources: cold water fish oils and/or flaxseed, Barlean's is one of the best, indeed.
Thank you to everyone who contributed. My "shopping list" is growing - this AM going out to buy her a bed so that I can put the magnets underneath, which I have. Am going to buy the purple positive energy plates shortly.
Any other suggestions heartily appreciated. Am creating a whole notebook for my use as well as giving it to my locally owned family pet store.

JFYI, there is an all natural pet food brand by the name of "Pet's Promise". No B.S. in it. They do have a website you might wish to consider. Home cooked is always best, but for those times you find yourself in a pinch, their products would be a good back up. If Evo is anything like them, then obviously you are already set.
I'd be interested to know the progress you have with all of this, if you would post it from time to time.
My German Shepherd was diagnosed via X-ray with elbow displasia at at 10 months, and he had stage 1 arthritis. At 1 1/2 years we put him on a natural diet. He eats raw, bony meat such as turkey wings, chicken backs, neck bones, etc. at every meal. (Dogs can eat bones, but they cannot eat cooked bones.) He is now six years old and asymptomatic. If you do a web search on "barf diet" you will find many, many success stories. I hope your dog gets better.

I second that notion! BARF is the best, absolutely.
Years ago, more than 10, I started cooking for our dogs. We have ALOT of dogs since we run an animal sanctuary, and donated food was scarce at this time. We knew cooking was better for them anyway. With a food grade 55 gal. drum cut in 1/3 and 2/3 sections, the first 1/3 being the lid, so that the cooker laid horizontal, I would build a fire and boil 20 or so gal's of water, add corn and soy meal, vegetables and meat from the grocery store scraps, and/or dairy, eggs, and such and then let it all cook for a while. This I would feed to them everyday. They did far better on this than any commercial food that was donated. However, presently we feed raw chicken. When we don't have time to get it out, we use the dry kibble stores. They all do really very well on raw chicken. Mind you this too is donated, around 1300lbs every two weeks. Two of the other biggest factors we've found in the health of these animals is eliminating vaccines to a very large extent, and there is absolutely no flouride or chlorine in our water. We are on a 189 ft well. Flouride leaches calcium from the bones and tissues, and chlorine destroys beneficial bacteria in the gut. Both do much more than this, though.
