Topic: Cairo Museum

Hi,

I was just reading an article about the Cairo Museum. Apparently there is a basement full with approximately 90,000 items that will be catalogued for the first time over the next 5 years!!!

It amazed me that the so called "Curators" just had a basement full of uncatalogued artifacts in disarray:

"We are going to have a basement like the basement of the British Museum that you can put artifacts, numbered, cataloged, and we are training the curators for the first time to understand what is the meaning of a curatorship," he said.

They did not have this before???

I lived in Cairo for a couple of years, and spent many a time at the Cairo Museum  - it is HUGE and you really need a good two weeks to go around it properly, so you can imagine the size of the basment!

Re: Cairo Museum

Not to be a paranoid conspiracy theorist, buuuuuut...............why now?  Why would they all of a sudden do this?   And why / how could the curators of a museum as large as that one not know "the meaning of curatorship"  ???

Reminds me of the end of the movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark", where they stuff the Ark of the Covenant away in a gigantic warehouse, packed in an anonymous crate, and the British guy tells Indiana, "It's in a safe place."

"Where?"

"A - safe - place."

Never to be seen or known to the outside world.    This stuff goes on.  Imagine all the artifacts from ancient civilizations ............maybe Atlantis, Mu, Lemuria, and others..............that we'll never see, never know about.    The rest of us run like gerbils in a wheel, around and around in circles wondering if these places ever existed, and meanwhile, they have all the evidence, hidden away, and won't tell us.
