Topic: Virtual Machine

Anybody have any experience or suggestions about virtual machines?

Downloaded this one:

http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

But it wouldn't install on Windows ME (?).

Re: Virtual Machine

When I was learning about networks and virus, I used VMware a lot,
VMware is(or was) a bit messy, but Microsoft Virtual PC is much more
“clean" .
To use VMware or virtual PC you need at least a Windows 2000 with
96/128 MB, better more…

Pictus,

If you go the members pictures thread you will notice that alushe posted a picture with a patch on his right eye.  Your borg picture has a robotic right eye.  You and alushe posted one after the other in syriarc's thread.

Re: Virtual Machine

Interesting and also he is the first with the picture and with the answer, but
this coincidence has any “hidden" meaning or this right eye “stuff" has any meaning ?
Something like right eye means XXXX and left eye means YYYY.

Amazing, you guys never let any drop escape smile

Re: Virtual Machine

I know this is an old thread. I think Windows ME is considered one of the worst products ever released by MS. I would recommending using a different O/S if you can.

A little bit of news on virtualization:

As of today, Microsoft has announced that Virtual PC will be availble as a free download to anyone who wants a copy.  We've already made Virtual Server available for free, so it only makes sense that Virtual PC should follow suit.  (Note: This does not include Virtual PC for Mac.)

Virtualization breaks out (article links 7 sub-articles with lots of details of the state of virtualization)

New technology offerings from hardware, software, and OS platform vendors are lowering the barrier of entry to server virtualization, creating IT opportunities like never before

I've been using VMware under XP to run a virtual linux system, took a little hacking to get Fedora Core 5 to work. and also have done the reverse running VMware for linux to run XP inside a virtual machine. I think VMware is the leader right now but it's a hot topic and there are several other options. Parallels was just released for Mac OSX (I think universal binary). From the free linux angle Xen looks pretty good, but I don't think it supports running Windows so it may not be useful for desktop users.

If you got the driver support to run a stable linux system, and you don't need the speed of running windows natively (3d gaming/directx, or pro-audio/ASIO). I would run a linux host with an XP guest to use those few applications on XP.

Regarding ME:

Ya, I've heard the same thing - But in 6 (+) years i've experienced zero problems - Of course it's the only thing I 'know'.......

Also, for whatever reason, caring about comp gadgets, the newest this and that is becoming less and less.......

Arc, I agree with being caught up in the myriad distractions, but that OS is the worst.
Of course, whatever works for one.

May I humbly suggest gnu/linux with ratpoison tongue

(I was considering if I meant as a solution or as the worst... and considering linux and bsd are stable and secure, and rat poison is effecient, low resource usage, and versatile I can't say it's worse than windows. Although to someone who is accustomed to pretty GUI interfaces this probably looks really scarey. That first screenshot includes a console-based web browser if you can believe it.)
