Topic: Taking down websites

Umm yeah Timewarner and AOL I think it is thats working with the gov't; Alex Jone's website (www.infowars.com) along with numerous other "hate websites" has been taken down for people using timewarner linked internet applications. It's starting; the censoring is getting worse

Re: Taking down websites

What people need to do, if possible, is to make copies of these websites on a disk.  Just so that we can say we still have them.

Today I was reading about what China has done, with their "Great Firewall of China" and I was wondering if other nations would eventually follow suit.  Basically, they've created the best internet censoring block in the world, and have locked their people out from most any website that we take for granted here in the "free" western world.    Not to be all slippery slope, but you never know.  Could happen here eventually down the line.  It's starts with Time Warner locking people out who use those internet applications, then moves on to others.   So before things get to that point, copies should be made of invaluable websites who have a goldmine of information.    Not necessarily just talking about infowars.com, but any website that is special and chock full of good info.

Can you please provide some source for this statement?  Where did you get your information from?  I'm using TW and can't access these sites.  Is it confirmed that Time Warner is censoring them?   I just called them to ask and the tech I spoke with denied that they were blocking any sites.   As far as I can tell Alex's servers might just be down for some reason.  If there is an actual reason to suspect censorship it would be helpful to know what that is.

Re: Taking down websites

His servers are not down as I can access them right at this moment - and I could access it 10mins ago too...

Me too.  I can access it just fine.  It sounds like a Time Warner / AOL thing to me.   Very suspicious.

Even if there turns out to be a rational explanation I still think it's not such a bad idea to make copies of invaluable websites...

Re: Taking down websites

Interesting.  Since my last post a few minutes ago I tried to access them using megaproxy and couldn't get them either.

Re: Taking down websites

I can't access infowars through megaproxy either.  Maybe it is one of their "blocked" sites.  The site is still up and running...

EDIT Megaproxy error "Please check your spelling. This website may also have moved, shut down, or been restricted by the
Megaproxyâ„¢ introductory service
".

Well we know the site hasn't moved, and it hasn't been shut down...so...

Re: Taking down websites

I just called Time Warner again, asked to escalate the issue, and was referred the their National Help Desk.  Once on the line with a tech there I again asked to speak with a supervisor and ended up talking to a Randy.  He assured me that they would not block any websites and that there is some kind of "network restructuring" going on.  He went on to state that the problem is outside their network and he therefore has no ETR.

I would not be surprised if a big company like this did change its policies on censorship and started quietly blocking websites before bothering to inform their own support people.  I guess time will tell what the actual story is in this case.

Re: Taking down websites

Now I can't access Rense either.

Re: Taking down websites

Hmmm. I just got a positive on rense and a negative on infowars.

But once they take over the website, then what do you think they do with them? I think they can use it towards pretty much whatever purpose they wish, sometimes. They probably track and list every visitor to the site for starters.

I am as is Void.

Re: Taking down websites

damn!

does infowars.com and infowars.net have the same thing?

I just got back in from an errand and Rense is there again.

In many cases your local cable or DSL Inernet Service Provider holds what is effectively a state-sponsored monopoly on high-speed access to the internet.  If they begin blocking websites, it's essentially censorship and a First Amendment violation.  Other than blocking access to the sites, they probably wouldn't need to do much of anything ... if no one can see the site, it doesn't matter what's on it anymore.

I wonder if this issue currently being covered on Slashdot has something to do with the current problem?  I'm not familiar enough with the architecture of the net to be able to judge.

Infowars.net is accessible from here.  It seems unusually slow but it's there.

Re: Taking down websites

I've finally got cable, but still have AOL, and though I don't use it
for mail, etc., I do use it as an ISP for the time being, and just now I had no problem logging on to infowars. Let me try Rense...

Re: Taking down websites

Got rense but it took a minute. Huh. I wonder if they are "taking records", in the meantime making sure everything is available, everything seems okay. But in reality they are keeping close tabs.

Re: Taking down websites

Yea, they're going after Alex.

AOL Time-Warner Censors Alex Jones Websites
Nationwide blackout a clear attempt to shut down free speech

Prison Planet | October 5 2005

Time Warner's ISP, Road Runner, has blocked access to all of Alex Jones' flagship websites across the entire United States.

We were first alerted to this problem early this morning when several locals in Austin reported that they were unable to access Infowars.com, PrisonPlanet.com or Prison Planet.tv.

Austin Time Warner had previously shut down access to our websites on a whim, claiming they were 'hate material' but in all cases had quickly restored them after receiving complaints.

However, this latest attack on free speech is occurring nationwide, with Time Warner subscribers from New York to California reporting that their access to the websites is being blocked.

The last attempt to shut us down came shortly after the London Bombings, which saw our traffic go through the roof after we released a plethora of articles exposing government involvement.

The consequence of this is that Prison Planet.com alone on some days gets more hits than the Britney Spears website or Rush Limbaugh.

Previously we reported that UK ISPs like Tiscali were blocking their subscribers from accessing the website after the 7/7 bombings.

It is obvious that those in high places are showing their disapproval. This only vindicates all the information we have been putting out.

How can a website that merely reports and comments on mainstream media articles be described as 'hate' unless there's a different agenda afoot? How can Bill O'Reilly get on Fox News and call for assassinating Prime Ministers and Pat Robertson on the 700 Club do the same and yet we get censored for being hateful? We have never called for violence against anyone and actively encourage peaceful exchange of information.

This is part of a growing trend of authoritarian censorship of the Internet in preparation for the emergence of Internet 2, where only government approved websites will be allowed to exist and the old Internet will be shut down.

Monolithic corporations in lock-step with government are following the Chinese model, where any website mildly anti-establishment is immediately shut down and its owners arrested. The vast majority of Internet cafes in China were shut down in 2002 after the government started a fire in one Beijing cafe and then demanded all the rest be shut down for 'safety reasons'.

Under anti-terrorism laws in Italy, Internet cafe owners are forced to take photo ID's of all their customers and install key-logging and filter software which blocks any websites the government chooses.

Today's actions by Time Warner fall into the same category. The First Amendment is under siege by jack-booted totalitarians in suits that graciously lick the boots and follow the orders of the establishment lackeys.

In 2002 Dell Computers cancelled an order placed by Weigand Combat Handguns because the company name triggered a security alert. The word 'combat' was not accepted by Dell's post-9/11 security alert system. This is an example of the inane and sweeping nature of these filtrations systems and the blanket idiocy applied to these cases.

We are urging all our readers (not that you will even be able to read this if you subscribe to Time Warner!) to boycott any Time Warner/Road Runner ISP service and cancel your subscription with them. They have proven themselves time and time again to be an anti-American freedom hating tool of the establishment.

We urge you to double your efforts in spreading the truth. Copy and distribute our artcles more than ever. We are under a direct assault, the only response needs to be a massive and powerful counter-offensive. To all alternative media websites, please post this article as we are all in the same boat, we are all under enemy fire.

If Time Warner do not immediately restore subscribers' access to our websites we will initiate a wider boycott campaign. They are already receiving a deluge of complaints and according to some are now claiming that this is an 'error' that they are looking into and citing other websites that have also been affected, even though these websites are having no problems.

We will update this article as and when Time Warner restores access to Alex Jones' websites. If they fail to do so we will carry telephone numbers and e mail addresses for people to make their complaints.
