Topic: Popular shampoos contain toxic chemicals linked to nerve damage

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have found a correlation between an ingredient found in shampoos and nervous system damage. The experiments were conducted with the brain cells of rats and they show that contact with this ingredient called methylisothiazoline, or MIT, causes neurological damage.

Which products contain this chemical compound MIT? Head and Shoulders, Suave, Clairol and Pantene Hair Conditioner all contain this ingredient. Researchers are concerned that exposure to this chemical by pregnant women could put their fetus at risk for abnormal brain development. In other people, exposure could also be a factor in the development of Alzheimer's disease and other nervous system disorders.

The chemical causes these effects by preventing communication between neurons. Essentially, it slows the networking of neurons, and since the nervous system and brain function on a system of neural networks, the slowing of this network will suppress and impair the normal function of the brain and nervous system.

These finding were presented December 5th at the American Society for Cell Biology annual meeting.

Re: Popular shampoos contain toxic chemicals linked to nerve damage

At the risk of sounding like a hippie, I've switched to Dr. Bronner's unscented
Castille soap as a shampoo.  My hair is clean and shiny and I don't use any
conditioner.  If you want your hair to smell fragrant, then use a drop or too
of sandalwood or some other organic essential oil.

Another ingredient which many people have an allergy to is sodium lauryl sulfate.
I don't see a need for all those chemicals they put in shampoo.  Mostly it
strips your hair of oils and moisture, making it necessary to use conditioner.
If your shampoo doesn't strip your hair then you don't need conditioner.
Hmm.  Create a need, then sell the public something to fix it.
(which doesn't work!)

I looked up that chemical, and it's also in paint products, lol.  I'm going by the healthfood store this afternoon to see what they've got.  A very long time ago I remember reading in Natl Geo about how the Navajos washed their hair with yucca root.  We don't need those corporate concoctions!  In addition to esthetic value most of the ingredients don't even do anything.

Exactly.  It's somebody's way of getting rid of their toxic waste chemicals AND poisoning the public, all at the same time.  Kill two birds with one stone.   wink  Why just dump the chemicals in a landfill or in the ocean when you can add them to our foods, beauty products, cigarettes, etc. ??    !!

Uh huh, there you go lyra!
You hit it right on the nose.  Can anybody spell fluoride?
Isn't it a toxic byproduct of nuclear energy?
But sell it to the people that it's good for you
and the problem's solved.
