I just joined NR so I'm coming into this thread a bit late. You probably already know that an Egyptian paper reported that the tsunami may have been caused by India, with the aid of Israel & the US, conducting an underwater nuclear test in a particularly geographically active area known as the "fire belt".
Of course most of the western press has ridiculed this accusation, and have focused on attacking the ideologically sensationalistic tone of the article rather than the scientific facts concerning this matter. Even the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, who generally give very detailed technical reasons for their positions on issues, just said basically "no, that wasn't the cause", without offering any substance in their rebuttal.
It is a fact that during WWII, New Zealand developed "Project Seal", which was a bomb specifically designed to cause a tsunami. It was tested at Whangaparaoa in 1944 and 1945, by setting off a series of underwater explosions which triggered mni-tidal waves. The project was considered so significant that Pentagon officials said that " if the project had been completed before the end of the war it could have played a role as effective as that of the atom bomb."

The western press has also ignored the fact that underground atomic tests have been known to cause underwater landslides, and underwater landslides are thought to be conducive to tsunamis.

I have not been able to corroborate that India did perform an underwater nuclear test on Dec. 26 '04, there don't seem to be any reports of it other than in the Egyptian paper - but I wouldn't be too surprised if it were true...
