You may not appreciate this unless you're a musician. There is a guy from Finland who takes guitar gods/bands and overdubs his own purposely bad solos, music and fake crowd reaction over the footage. If you've ever witnessed really bad bands trying to jam/warming up or lame guitarists trying out guitars at the local music store, you'll appreciate these. It's the funniest thing I've seen in ages:

Too funny! I'm a person and even I can't skateboard! Look at this dog go! He pushes the board while running with one paw on it, then hops on and goes, leaning to the left, leaning to the right and steering his board all around Venice Beach and Santa Monica and Hollywood. Vids like this make me miss L.A. and all the crazy fun stuff you see there!
Tillman is so cool! Tyson is another skating bulldog. (what is it with skateboarding and bulldogs?)

I lived on Venice Beach for a few years between 1997 and 2004 (literally, right on the boardwalk). Although I don't miss many other parts of L.A. (particularly anything happening east of Lincoln blvd and virtually all people living there), I do miss living in Venice.
Characters like Jerome (the little flaming black dude who dances and skateboards himself around the boardwalk...with only stubs for his arms and legs), Harry Perry (who really is not a very good guitar player, which makes him endearing) and the many palm readers, handwriting analysts, etc. The smell of incense every day rising up to my window, playing in the drum circle every sunday afternoon, rollerblading to Third Street for Benita's Fries.
I've been looking at places there over the past 6 months, considering going back....
Now, onto a funny video involving a cat:

Who knows, maybe we were there at the same time and didn't know it. I went up there a few times to watch the drum circles on Sunday afternoons during the time period you speak of. I left in 2002. Venice was the last place I visited before leaving California for good. I was heading back to Cali on the 5 south from Oregon, and at the junction of the 5 and 405 I swung over to the 405 since it would be my only chance before leaving for good. Had my cat with me. So I was one of the crazy people populating the boardwalk, carrying my black cat over my shoulder as I bought incense and watched a drum circle from underneath a palm tree. My cat's first and only trip to the beach. She didn't care much for it. But she did really dig the drum circle. Her eyes were locked on it intensely, something about the rhythmic drums maybe really got her attention. Or maybe she was just seeing stuff the rest of us couldn't see.

Just a random fun vid I thought I'd post:

I could relate to the reaction that the woman had who filmed it. That would be me too, laughing in exhileration going "OH SHIT!! HAHAHAHAHAHA! WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
That landing vid reminded me of this other one that has been going around:

I actually was in Williamsburg, NYC that year (moved back to Venice in April, 2003). I seem to go back and forth between NYC and L.A (although I'm in Sedona right now).
I used to love the drum circle. Beside the fact that I'm a drummer, I just loved the weird vibe. Definitely more going on there than just drumming...in other realms. I bought a great drum from a family that made them (they often set up on the boardwalk and sell their drums). It literally was the deepest sounding drum in southern california and I loved to be the foundation of what was going on in the circle. Had a good friend who used to come down and record the whole thing. Made for some awesome tribal rhythms that later would be used in trance music.
Anyway, Venice is a good mix of light and dark and I think that's what attracted me there and still does.
(I love black cats. 3 black cats have owned me throughout my life. My favorite was my mom's cat, who was around when I was a teenager. Her name was Obeah..which I'm sure some here will get)
