Re: "I hate trees," she said.
Belljar, I know exactly how you feel! I didn't used to commune with trees, but I have been for the past few years. I did, however, have certain trees at my favorite park that I just loved to be around, even before I knew I was communicating with them. Once I realized what friends they were, I was surprised I hadn't noticed what I was doing before.
I'll bet you were devastated when your mailbox friend was cut down. Didn't it feel to you a little like murder? When I see people just wantonly destroying living things without even giving a passing thought, it makes me sick to my soul.
Of course, my passion for trees started when I was young. I was a true tomboy, and climbed trees all the time. We had an apple tree that was perfect for lounging in, and when I really wanted a birdseye view, I climbed the huge cottonwood in the front yard. My dad even built a ladder on it because the bottom branch was 15-20 feet off the ground! I never felt scared, like I would fall, but I wouldn't do that now, LOL.
My mom reminded me just today that we had a neighbor who HATED that cottonwood tree. She kept bugging them to cut it down because it loses a lot of leaves, and my parents said "No way!" They've always loved that tree, and today it's one of the tallest, most perfectly shaped cottonwoods I've ever seen.
