Hey,

The other day I was shopping for toothpaste again, didn't want to get anything with fluoride in it, so I got this 'Sensodyne Original' stuff.  Instead of the text on the bottom of the tube saying it has flouride, this one has "Strontium Chloride 6H20 (10% w/w)".

Does anyone know how safe/harmful this stuff is?

cheers

This is the most definitive thing I could find in a search. Apparently it used in multiple ways, most seeming unnatural. One way, it seems to be used as binding agent for chemical comounds. Sorry I didn't turn up much else. But, from what I read I wouldn't recommend it.

thook, thanks for the insights.  I found this jargon from http://dental-professional.ca:

Sensodyne Original formula contains strontium chloride 10% w/w. Strontium chloride occludes the dentinal tubules, thereby reducing fluid flow and dentin hypersensitivity pain. This formula does not contain fluoride.

And other sites rate is as 1/10 health risk rating, but have the following 'Label Hazard Warning':
CAUTION! MAY BE HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED OR INHALED. MAY CAUSE IRRITATION TO SKIN, EYES, AND RESPIRATORY TRACT.

So, it looks like it best not be used as a toothpaste...

Ah! My dental friend, did you look at the links I posted for Matthew? See that, and then google "tooth soap". There are alternatives out there.

Thanks for the warning, thook.  After posting, I learned that Burt's Bees products do not contain those ingredients.

Yeah, you have to keep in mind that just because something says it's "natural" or has the word natural or "nature" in the title, doesn't necessarily make it so.   In fact...........I was commenting about this recently, looking at the labels at so many of the so-called "natural" body products.  They have just as many ingredients, and unpronouncable words, as any of the mainstrem "bad" products.  !  It's ridiculous.   These companies know that if they slap the word "natural" or "nature" somewhere on their label then people will believe it's so.   But it's not always the case.   When I saw the ingredients in the Nature's Way toothpaste mentioned earlier in this thread I just cringed.  Eeek!    The rule should be the more something claims it's all natural, the more the ingredients need to be scrutinized!  big_smile

Burt's Bees indeed is one of the few, true, all natural product lines out there.  There are others, but that's a brand that's pretty mainstream and easily accessible to everybody, even in regular grocery stores.  I've tried their toothpaste, both flavors (lavender and cinnamon) and it was okay stuff.   Might take some getting used to for those who've never used all natural toothpaste - it's not as thick and "pasty" as mainstream toothpaste...................and it doesn't foam.   'Cause there's no sodium lauryl sulfate!  So it's more runny and non-foaming, but, it tastes good and apparantly does the job, so, there you go!   I still use Tom's, which has the foaming s.l.s, but I'm thinking now that I should switch back to Burt's.

Buy Burts products!!  It's good stuff!  big_smile

Ahurani,

Have you tried "Real Salt"?  I almost died due to flouride reaction.  Since I began using real salt I haven't had any decay or gum problems.  It's a very fine salt and it is not bleached or treated in any way.

Worked for me.

I recently read that brine water (Salt dissolved in water untill it reaches saturation point and so no more dissolves) is good for cleaning teeth and can actually dissolve tartar on the teeth. I have been trying this for a few days made from himalyan cystal salt and my mouth is as fresh as using regular fluoride free tootpaste. I normaly  use tea tree fluoride free toothpaste from the local health food store but all those brands including Tom's still contain sodium laurel sulphate which is not good.
Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide are good whiteners and will kill any bugs in the mouth.

From an old Homeopathic reporatory i found the 3 tissue salts remedies Calc Fluor, Kali Phos and Silicea taken together  were under the rubric for re-enamalising teeth, they are same as in the biochemic teething remedies for babies and in a low homeopathic potency.

Its not like we are fractions of the whole but rather versions of the whole.

Re: True teeth care - re-enamalize naturally

Hate to burst any bubbles, but if you care to know, Burt's has glycerine in it! I used Burt's until I was reminded in this thread of Judd's claim on glycerine. It sucked 'cause I did like it. So, I just switched back to some handmade soap and H2O2. I know, it ain't tasty, but it does the job. All the pain (the soap blah) is over in a few minutes! And then my teeth are cleaned. If it would help, I'll do some digging on tastier alternatives.

Re: True teeth care - re-enamalize naturally

Pretty much every ingredient could be deemed "bad" by somebody, it's just a matter of to what extent you want to take it.  Most dentists would think brushing with soap is atrocious, I'm sure.  So when it comes to ingredients in products, you just have to pick the lesser of the evils.   Lye based soap, or glycerin....glycerin or sodium lauryl sulfate....sodium lauryl sulfate or Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate.....Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, and whatever's in Crest and Colgate that can't even be pronounced.....!!!  big_smile   Take your pick.  Burt's is still overall the one with the least evils in it I would think......right???   Tell me Burt's isn't evil!!!!!   haha

Re: True teeth care - re-enamalize naturally

Ha! Burt's is one of the best, for sure. I still keep some in my backpack for long town excursions and use it in a pinch. You know, if you don't have any major dental issues, thne you're probably okay. Judd's claims do seem to be geared more those with enamel issues. But, the rest of advice is still a good idea. I have some major cavities. I will have them filled if I don't see any improves soon enough. So, I'm going to follow them and see what I get. Those shots in the back of the jaw aren't really all that much fun! wink
Here's an idea, though. It's heavy on the marketing, but....maybe?

Re: True teeth care - re-enamalize naturally

Hello,
Anyone else using Dr. Bronner's soap for brushing the teeth?  It is not very expensive, is a pure soap product and seems to do the job.   Followed with H2O2, it provides a complete cleansing program for the mouth.  I'm also currently trying the sunflower seed oil swishing in the mouth each morning (that's on another thread here).
Thanks to everyone for all the information sharing!!

Tom's of Maine was recently bought by Colgate, for anyone still using or considering using that brand.

Re: True teeth care - re-enamalize naturally

czyx: yeah what the HECK is up with that?  I'm sure they will do nothing but bastardize an otherwise great product.  So in preparation I've already switched to "JASON" toothpaste and will probably be switching to Ivory bar-soap after that is gone.  I'm sick of their games.  Literally.

mmmmm......bar soap! One might consider a sonicare toothbrush as well. It's dandy!

I'm back to plain old Arm & Hammer on a Sonicare.  Just like my grandma taught me when I was young.  It makes my mouth feel cleaner than anything else has.
