Re: The Music Thread

I'm curious to know what others find appealing about the music they like. For instance, Czyx and Xenopope, you guys were discussing breakcore... could you comment on what you like about it? Or google and CV, you mentioned jazz...same question -- the reason that I ask is because next time I listen to those genres, I'll try and focus in upon the same things and see what happens. Maybe it's an acquired taste, and by starting to discern its valuable qualities one can have a better chance of getting into it.

Great! Let me make my soundtrack:

pre-matrix (side A):

Prison Blues - Jimmy Page
In the Cage - Genesis
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns'n'Roses
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon - Queen

post-matrix (side B):

The Ancient - Kitaro
Awaken - Yes
Other Side of Life - Moody Blues
Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun - Pink Floyd
Pilot to Paradise - Eloy

P.S: This will be a 33' LP, the best way to listen to good quality music. CDs or mp3s do not have that great effect.

P.S II: All these tracks have "the spirit" for me, this is the music that takes me to altered-states, helps me to connect with higher aspects of myself. Yes, music can do this.

Re: The Music Thread

I like music that is intense, passionate, and/or has a good beat.  For that reason I find music that is appealing to me in all genres.  I especially cannot resist the blues; that music touches me on a primal level.  High notes whether they come from a voice or an instrument gives me chills.

I admire the rugged individualism, the spontaneity, the pioneering adventure of it.
It's the libertarian music where the individual matters.
And yet it's democratic putting the creation before the individual.
Freedom/responsibility.

It's the balancing act of music.
It's the difference between seeing a highwire act in person as oppossed to on tape (where you know the guy is going to make it.).

It's the difference between seeing the painting and seeing the painting being painted.

You can take any amount of good jazz musicians and put them together and get music. We train ourselves to be in the moment. It is all about now.

Jazz is light on arrangement but heavy on improvisation.
When you see a jazz performer you are seeing someone creating music and not recreating.
The jazz musician is creating one minute's worth of music in one minute.
Masterpeice by midnight.
Other forms can take a lifetime to compose that minute.

When you hear jazz at it's best you know that the performer is feeling what they are playing.

Much jazz falls flat on its face, like the highwire artist.
That's its nature and strength.

Jazz is "Screw it, I'll do it my way !".

Jazz is Robin Williams on a roll, other forms of music are a well rehearsed Steven Wright.  Funny but rehearsed. (Don't you feel a little bit cheap knowing that the audience got the same thing last night ?).

The glorious moment in non-improvised music is at the moment it is composed.
A jazz musician is always composing.

Jazz is risk

..........  but it swings.

Ahhh, that was fun.
Thanks for the opportunity to expound.

Genesis!! I love them. And that song Tonight, tonight, tonight (off of . .  what, Invisible Touch?). I REALLY want to remake that song in the style of Exegesis. Same song structure and lyrics with a metal/heavy feel to it. I think it would come off pretty well. Anyone familiar with that song?

Well, that's a good question - with me, I am very picky with music but the reason I like the breakcore that I DO like I think would have something to do with it's nature of unpredictability of the beat structure. And melody. Or the combination of the two. I really like music that allows me to imagine or invokes a sense of innocence or bewilderment.

Yes, Tonight, tonight, tonight is good song from Invisible Touch, but this album is the proof that the old progressive Genesis (Peter Gabriel's Genesis) is gone sad

We always thought with my friends that the lyrics

"i'm comin' down comin' down like a monkey,
but it's allright"

is the view of Phil Collins about Genesis history. Because this Phil Collins' Genesis is really bad compared to Peter Gabriel era

But I'd like to hear tonight, tonight.. as a heavy metal cover. That would be better!

The best way I can describe my enjoyment of good breakcore is that it is like listening to an impossible dancer. It's psychedelic and synesthetic--the drum programming evokes the raw concept of dancing. The varied drum patterns are like different moves, motions, and positions. I say "impossible" because the beats are so fast and frenzied it would be impossible to actually dance to them in such a way as to match every element of their expressiveness. Venetian Snares is the main guy who produces music like this. Enduser is getting really good at it.  µ-Ziq (who actually calls his stuff "braindance") is one of its progenitors, although most of what he does it typically called IDM.

The noisier breakcore is great for pushing all the thoughts right out of your brain and just spazzing out. I like the crunchy distortion, abrasiveness, and loudness of it. It's also good for passive listening while doing other stuff, like researching on the internet. It speeds you up and puts you in the zone. This is the less intelligent breakcore, like the DJ Scud and DJ 6666.

The more intricate melodic breakcore is meant to be listened to with a producer's ear, paying attention to the patterns or lack thereof. One of the features of the electronic music out of which breakcore arose is a repetitive beat. That beat can cause a kind of "listener's fatigue". It can also pull you out of the music when you know exactly what the beat is going to do. With good breakcore, unpredictability of the beat is important. Beats are chopped up, reversed, stuttered, pitched up and down, etc., so that there is a constant element of creativity and expression in this historically overlooked area of electronic music production.

Re: The Music Thread

Thanks for all the elaboration, I now better understand what it is about some of these genres that people find appealing. Anyone else, feel free to contribute your reasons.

Hehe, yeah when I listened to the breakcore samples you linked to my first impression was "technical death electronica" because it had similar intricacy and intensity as some of the technical death metal bands I know minus the guitars. It came off as abrasive, chaotic, and hard to follow...but these are the very things that some can appreciate as distortion, variety, and unpredictability. Alright, it's clearer now.

Google, interesting feedback on why you like jazz. I browsed through a book on jazz listening today at the store. I know intellectually why people like it, but jazz to me remains like metal to you. Live performance and improvisation doesn't appeal to me, but it's clear that it takes impressive amounts of talent to create jazz.

As the year draws to a close I would like to share this ascension song by A Perfect Circle - Vanishing. May those with the ears to hear . . . listen.

Vanishing

A Perfect Circle wrote:

"Vanishing"

Disappear
Higher
Higher
Into the air
Slowly disappear
No, no longer here

Disappear
Disappear
Thinner, thinner
Into the air

Never really here
Wasn't ever

Like a thought brushing up against a sigh
Floating away
Floating away [repeated]

Vanishing like a cyan sunday
Disappear
Disappear
Vanish, vanish into the air
Slowly disappear
Never really here

Floating away
Floating away [repeated]

Re: The Music Thread

someone i know from another forum put this up in a thread entitled 'Livin on the Mic' - an old joint:

http://s43.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3USF … 3H57OPT4D8

so the song is called 'Livin on the Mic' - by Randall Stevens and Civil-I-Son ... here's what RS - the guy who made the post said about the song,

"well actually its only like half a year old. one of my first recordings. I found this on my pc after trying to make some space on my hard disk emptying out old files.

this is me and my man Civil-I-Son, he laid down the beat and then we laced our vocals, I go under the alias Randall Stevens on this. I put a lot of thought and energy into this verse. notice my delivery and flow migh not be too smooth cause of my lack of experience in breathe control. feel free to give thoughts, suggestions, advice and critisizum! peace"

i actually listened to this song a few times to get the full meaning of the words that were being said - i like both of their raps - they touched a chord with me ...

I missed this the first time I saw your post. Some good stuff! I really like that Darkwell track. I'm a sucker for metal with female vocals, though. Nightwish is my favorite, but I also like Sirenia, Midnattsol, and Imperia. The Isole singer reminds me of the guy from VAST, which isn't metal, but which I think you might like.

Re: The Music Thread

Montalk you may like these. These are two metal tracks I got from a co-worker who listened to nothing but god-rock (religious Christian bands). He made me a compilation of only the tracks I selected so I cannot tell you the names of the tracks or the bands. Believe it or not both of these two tracks are by Christian metal bands. If anyone can tell me their names or the bands, I will be truly suprised.

This second one has some interesting choir-ish vocals for the bridge - if anyone knows who plays these songs, speak up!

I'll call them:

Re: The Music Thread

*song that describes my theme for the new year, Walk the Walk by Poe*

Mother spent ten years sitting by a window
Scared if she spoke she would die of a heart attack
She listened as her dreams silently screamed
They drowned like little dolphins caught in a fishnet

Dear world i'm pleased to meet you

Hey everybody when you walk the walk
You gotta back it all up can you talk the talk
Hey everybody when I hear the knock
Don't wanna measure out my life to the tick of a clock

Hey everybody when my daddy died
He had a sad sad story living in his eyes
Hey everybody when you walk the walk
You cannot measure out your life to the tick of a clock

I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum

Hey everybody
Can you walk the walk you gotta back it all up
But can you talk the talk
Hey everybody
can you walk the walk?

I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
(Say what?)
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
(Say what?)

I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
I wanna live to the beat of my own drum
I wanna take to the beat of my own drum
I wanna hang ten, high, say pleased to meet you

Give to the beat of my own drum
I wanna sing to the beat of my own drum

I wanna fly, cry, win, lose, live, die, take five
Pleased to meet you

My daddy spent ten years living on the outside looking in
He thought that he would never get back
Watched his dream walk across a silver screen
And he was standing there when the theatre went pitch black

Dear world I'm pleased to meet you

Hey everybody when I walk the walk
I gotta back it all up I vgotta talk the talk
Hey everybody when I hear the knock
Don't wanna measure out my life to the tick of a clock

Hey everybody--can you walk the walk?

I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
(Say what?)
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
(Say what?)

I wanna live to the beat of my own drum
I wanna laugh to the beat of my own drum
I wanna play to the beat of my own drum
I wanna hang ten, high, say pleased to meet you

I wanna screw up to the beat of my own drum
I wanna take it out of town and do it to my drum

Scream shout
Wipe out
Make love to my baby

Father: It's a wonderful idea, but it doesn't work.

My own drum my own beat

Hey did you ever get the feeling that it's really a joke
You think you've got it figured out and then you find that you don't
So you say goodbye to the world and now you're floating in space
You got no sense of nothing not even a time or a place
Then suddenly you hear it it's the beat of your heart
And for the first time in your life you know your life is about to start

I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
