Chinese envoy hopeful on N Korea
A high-level Chinese envoy has returned from North Korea expressing optimism about the mounting nuclear crisis.
Tang Jiaxuan, who met North Korea's reclusive leader Kim Jong-il, said his visit had "not been in vain".
Official: Fake NFL threat competition between two men

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (CNN) -- A law enforcement official told CNN that a man has admitted he posted a fake bomb threat against National Football League stadiums in major U.S. cities as part of an Internet competition with a person in Texas to create the scariest terror scenario possible.
The official told CNN that it's too early to say whether the man will be charged.
The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security had earlier determined that the threat was a hoax, FBI spokesman Richard Kolko told CNN Thursday.
Earlier Thursday, the FBI interviewed and released a 20-year-old Milwaukee, Wisconsin, man after his friend came forward with information about the online posting of a threat against NFL stadiums.
An FBI source told CNN that agents do not believe the man has any connections to terrorism, but do believe he was involved in making the threat.
The DHS this week sent an advisory to the National Football League and local officials describing a possible uncorroborated threat against some NFL stadiums.
The threat, posted on a Web site, alleged that bombs could be used this weekend against stadiums in New York; Miami, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Seattle, Washington; Houston, Texas; Oakland, California; and Cleveland, Ohio. The posting said the bombs were to be delivered by truck.
The DHS said earlier the posting was not considered credible, and that the information was being shared only out of caution so that league officials and others could determine what steps to take.

Syria 'to release' dissident Kilo
Syria has ordered the release of dissident Michel Kilo five months after his arrest, a supporter says.
"A copy of the decision to set Kilo free is with us. He will be with his family this evening," opposition figure Hassan Abdul Azim said.
A judge granted Mr Kilo bail five months after his arrest for demanding Syria establish normal diplomatic ties with Lebanon.
The authorities have not confirmed the release of Mr Kilo, a prominent writer.
He was one of 10 dissidents detained in May for signing a petition calling for changes in Syria's trouble relations with its smaller neighbour.
The only other one still believed to be in custody is the well-known human rights lawyer Anwar al-Bunni.
Hundreds of Syrian and Lebanese intellectuals signed the document, which was published in May in the Lebanese newspaper Nahar.
It called on Syria to release all Lebanese political detainees, while underlining the need to "respect and consolidate the sovereignty and independence of Lebanon and Syria" in the face of "Israeli aggression and American hegemony".
Syria frequently arrests human rights activists and others who publicly criticise government policies.
Humans rights group Amnesty International says several hundred political prisoners are detained in Syrian jails, where they risk torture and ill-treatment.

Syria detains writer in dissident crackdown

Syrian authorities have detained a prominent writer and government opponent in a continuing crackdown on dissidents. The writer, Michel Kilo, had been involved in drawing up a petition calling for a halt to his country’s interference in Lebanon, from where it withdrew its troops last year after a nearly 30-year presence.

Another of his outrageous speeches was delivered Friday to a pro-Palestinian rally marking the Islami Republic’s “al Qods Day” (Jerusalem Liberation Day). In further inflammatory remarks, Ahmadinejad said “the world knows the US and Britain are enemies of the Iranian nation.” He warned European nations not to harm Iran, saying that if anger in the region boiled over, Europe would get hurt because of its support for Israel. “Europe must distance itself from Israel at once. That is Iran’s ultimatum. “He went on to brand the UN Security Council and its decisions “illegitimate.”
DEBKAfile adds: These words amounted to an Iranian threat of harm to the European UN forces deployed in Lebanon unless they left forthwith.
His harsh words followed two events: one, the Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert’s statement in Moscow this week after he met with Russian leaders: “They need to fear that something that they do not want to happen will happen. In no case, Olmert stressed, “will we reconcile with nuclear arms in Iranian hands. There is no margin for error here.”
The other event was the arrival in the Persian Gulf of the giant US carrier Iwo Jima with its Expeditionary Strike Group to join the American naval, air and marine might piling up opposite Iran’s shores.
Next week too, the Security Council convenes to discussion a form of sanctions against Iran for refusing to desist from enriching uranium.

Iran warns of revenge over Israel
Iran's president has warned that Muslims around the world will take revenge on states who supported Israel against the Palestinians.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad again questioned the extent of the Holocaust, when German Nazis murdered six million Jews.
Israel was founded on "claims about the Holocaust" for which the Palestinians were paying the price, he told a rally.
He was speaking on Jerusalem Day, when there are large demonstrations in Iran in support of the Palestinians.
BBC Tehran correspondent Frances Harrison says the tone of the speech was hardline, even by Mr Ahmadinejad's standards.
Implicit threat
Mr Ahmadinejad called Israel's leaders a "group of terrorists" and appeared to threaten any country that supports it.
"You imposed a group of terrorists... on the region. It is in your own interest to distance yourself from these criminals... This is an ultimatum. Don't complain tomorrow."
The "ultimatum" was directed at European states in particular.
"We have advised the Europeans that the Americans are far away, but you are the neighbours of the nations in this region," Mr Ahmadinejad said.
"We inform you that the nations are like an ocean that is welling up, and if a storm begins, the dimensions will not stay limited to Palestine, and you may get hurt."
'Israeli insecurity'
Mr Ahmadinejad said Israel no longer had any reason to exist and would soon disappear. "This regime, thanks to God, has lost the reason for its existence. Efforts to stabilise this fake regime, by the grace of God, have completely failed."
Mr Ahmadinejad said: "Even if we assume the Holocaust is true, then why should the Palestinians pay the price for it."
He said millions of Israelis should go back to their countries of origin.
Mr Ahmadinejad said Lebanese Hezbollah militants had shattered the myth of Israel's military power, so that "Zionists" in their homes in various corners of the world, could not now enjoy security.
The Iranian president has regularly questioned the extent of the Holocaust, and been a trenchant critic of Israel.
In 2004 he drew widespread and angry international criticism when he approvingly quoted comments by Ayatollah Khomeini that Israel's existence should be brought to an end.

Iran: Israel links may hurt Europe

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has warned Europe that it may pay a heavy price for its support of Israel.
"You should believe that this regime (Israel) cannot last and has no more benefit to you. What benefit have you got in supporting this regime, except the hatred of the nations?" he said in nationally broadcast speech Friday.
"We have advised the Europeans that the Americans are far away, but you are the neighbors of the nations in this region," he said.
"We inform you that the nations are like an ocean that is welling up, and if a storm begins, the dimensions will not stay limited to Palestine, and you may get hurt."
Ahmadinejad's comments came on Jerusalem Day -- when Iranians are officially encouraged to show their support for the Palestinians.
These remarks were made a day after Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Iran would "have a price to pay" if it continued down the path of its nuclear ambitions.
Olmert was speaking to reporters Thursday on his way home from a three-day trip to Moscow. Israel, along with the United States and other Western powers, rejects Tehran's claim that its nuclear program is peaceful, designed solely to produce energy.
The Iranian leader has long spoken out against Israel, saying the Jewish nation should be "wiped off the map."
He has not since repeated that phrase but often launches verbal attacks on Israel, whose right to exist Iran has not recognized since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
On Friday, Ahmadinejad said there was no justification for the "Zionist regime" -- a term he often uses when referring to Israel -- arguing that it is on the verge of disintegration.

Anger as new 9/11 remains found
Human remains - some reportedly as large as arm or leg bones - have been found at the site of the 11 September 2001 attacks in New York.
The remains were found in rubble excavated from a manhole near the site of the World Trade Center.
Relatives say the find proves the need for a thorough new search of the area around Ground Zero.
"We can no longer rely on accidental discoveries," said WTC Families for Proper Burial in a statement.
"This must be a deliberate search. May this awful news be the catalyst needed to go back and do the job well."
Families of more than 1,100 of the victims of 9/11 have never received any remains of their loved ones.
The campaign group is to hold a news conference over the latest discovery later on Friday.
Abandoned site
The material excavated from the manholes was removed from the site without anyone noticing it contained the remains, said utility company Consolidated Edison.
On Thursday, the Port Authority contractor spotted the remains, the Associated Press news agency said.
Some of the remains were as big as arm or leg bones, Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority, was quoted by AP as saying.
Construction workers have been instructed to look for human remains and notify the medical examiner's office when they find them.
"No official identifications have been made at this time and the New York City Police Department and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are heading up the investigation," said Patrick J Brennan of the Mayor's Community Assistance Unit was quoted by the AP news agency.
The discovery comes just weeks after the fifth anniversary of the attacks.
Earlier this year, construction workers in New York discovered 74 bone fragments from 9/11 victims. The remains were found mixed in with roofing material at the condemned Deutsche Bank building, which stands next to Ground Zero.

Turkish troops arrive in Lebanon
A group of nearly 100 Turkish soldiers and engineers has arrived in Lebanon's capital, Beirut, to help reinforce the UN peacekeeping mission in the south.
The Turkish troops are expected to be involved in reconstruction and de-mining work following the 34-day conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.

Rice: No Chinese breakthrough in Pyongyang, Kim is bent on escalation

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice threw cold water on reports that in talks with Chinese special envoy Tang Jiaxuan, North Korean leader Kim Jong-il had regretted the first nuclear test carried out on Oct. 9 and promised not to test again. Reporting on her own Beijing talks on the way to Moscow, Rice said “Tang did not tell me that Kim Jong-il either apologized or said he would never test again” in his “fairly thorough briefing” to her on his Pyongyang mission. The North Koreans, she said, “would like to see an escalation of the tension.” She described their tone as still being belligerent.
Moscow is the last stop in the US secretary’s five-day Asian trip which included Tokyo and Seoul to strengthen the sanctions the UN imposed on North Korea for its nuclear test.
