I wondered if the opposite was true. If you were really evil during life, could you de-evolve into something demonic after death?
I was watching a program on TLC called something like Haunting, or Haunted, that seemed to confirm this theory. The story went like this:
A couple bought their dream house, a Victorian mansion in Utah. The house had not been lived in for decades and everything in the house--wiring, plumbing, etc, had to be redone. While remodeling the house, the husband discovered a boarded up doorway in the back of a closet. He tore down the boards and discovered a series of three rooms. The rooms had obviously been children's rooms by the decorations. They thought it strange that a whole series of rooms had been boarded up. Perhaps something bad had happened there?
That is when the trouble started. Typical ghost stuff would happen like people would hear tappings on walls and stuff. One night the wife saw a middle-aged man staring in her window. Another night her son saw a man, just a black shape of a man, emerge from his closet. Afterwards, he would never sleep in the room again, and had night terrors and nightmares every night.
The mother, throughout the whole ordeal, would hear children crying out to her for help.
Things escalated. They brought a psychic in and she revealed the history of the house.
A previous occupant was a Mormon polygamist who had a dozen children. He would take them into the boarded-off rooms and rape and abuse them. He became so evil that during life, all that was human of him died. He became a demon upon death, and had imprisoned his victims, even after death, in the house.
The psychic then proceeded to exorcise the father from the house. She saved the hidden complex of rooms for last, entrapping the demonic spirit in it.
Now this is the freaky part! His spirit was so intent on not leaving, that he began screaming. A powerful wind shrieked from the room, so powerful that the exorcist had to crawl along the floor, creeping forward with her hands. The exorcist succeeded. The children were freed, and demon left.
