Ayahuasca wrote:

I've been getting mild headaches...

Oftentimes headaches are due to muscle tension. They're generally termed muscle tension headaches. I work on the side as a massage therapist, so I have some expertise here...

Sitting in front of a computer, especially if a person leans back in an office chair, and rounds their back and shoulders forward, the posterior cervicals (muscles of the back of the neck) can become tight and shortened from having to level the head. Pain, and headaches, from this usually radiate from the suboccipitals at the rear base of the skull. Also, if the posterior cervicals are being chronically shortened, then the anterior (front neck) muscles could be getting overstretched--and this causing headache-like pain, too.

Sitting up is, I think, the best global solution. And by sitting up I mean holding your head over your shoulders. (If your chin is jutting, then your head is probably not centered over your shoulders). Your head weighs (on average) 10-12 pounds, and for every inch you're holding your head out in space over your shoulders, you're asking your neck muscles to support an additional 10 pounds (more or less).

Another big factor in computer-related pain is having your arms rest too high, causing flexing/shortening in your shoulder/neck complex. Your shoulders, ideally, should feel like they're naturally drooping while typing. Raising your chair might help with this.

A great stretch for the back of the neck is the Yoga Bridge pose. You lay on your back, knees bent, feet on the floor, your fingertips just able to touch your heels. Then you push your hips toward the ceiling, forming a line (at 45 degrees or so) along your thighs, abs, and torso. You hold the position for about three breaths. Don't turn your head in this position.

I find it useful.

Ayahuasca wrote:

I know it's not my eyesight because I wear glasses and my eyes were tested quite recently. I don't have any problems with focusing.

I recently heard of a study stating that when people watch television or sit in front of a monitor, they tend to blink too little. On average, the eyes blink 20 or so times per minute. When in front of a TV or monitor, testees only blinked 8 times per minute. Blinking massages the eyes.

I've been trying blinking breaks when I'm at the computer.

Try a simple muscle test to see what works.

To test someone get them to stand up and put their right or left arm infront of their body outstretched with palm down.
Apply pressure to the back of their hand or wrist trying to force their arm down and ask them to resist you, gauge how much pressure you need to oppose them to find equilibrium.
Now introduce an electro magnetic field, get them to hold a hairdryer(switched on) or similar with their free hand. Repeat the process, it should now be far more easy to push their arm down.
Now test your protection device by putting it on the person or very close to them and repeat with them still holding the hairdryer, if the device is good the arm will be back to high resistance again.

I agree that getting a flat screen monitor will help you significantly. The CRT tubes found in most monitors and TV screens are not easy on the eyes at all, due to the extremely high flicker rate (scan frequency). With the prices of an average TFT cheaper than ever, now is as good a time as any to invest in a nice 17" or 19" flat panel. You'll save on desk space too!

consider the possibility that the cause might not be external.

you can unconsciously strain yourself if you are to focussed on tasks, doing things that are as you say necessary. a lot of people slowly get semi-permanently disabled this way.
As you are not aware of it, or do not want to be aware of it you can imagine all kinds of visible and invisible external issues that prevent you from concentrating or working (people around you, harmful EMF, mcs's), until the threat gets worse and worse and you feel you have to work harder and harder.

Although the above might not be relevant to your issue, it still might be handy to be aware of it.

I'm hopefully going to explore soon a method using magnets, coming from Niccen (BTW if anyone has "info" about them, it would be appreciated). I'll report back when I have done so.

On another note I recently got myself a flatscreen monitor and the change is quite astounding even though I didn't expect the results: it's now much harder for me to stay in front of my computer for long periods of time while before I could stay 12 hours straight without problems I think this is because the hypnotizing effect is missing. The first days I got the screen I couldn't concentrate on anything, so had to train myself again to use my will. Hypnosis has its advantages but I'm glad I do not have to be under that influence several hours a day.

I'm the first person to admit that I spend a very unhealthy amount of time in front of my computer, but right now it's necessary while I'm setting up a new internet business. If my plans work out then I hope that within 6-12 months I'll be able to cut back the amount of time I spend on my computer to less than 3 or 4 hours a day.

Anyway, for the first time I've recently started to feel the effects of spending too much time staring at a screen. I've been getting mild headaches and starting to feel very drained by the middle of the day sometimes. I know it's not my eyesight because I wear glasses and my eyes were tested quite recently. I don't have any problems with focusing.

Anyway I'm vaguely aware that there's various devices, or pendants or whatever that are supposed to help protect you from harmful electromagnetic fields. I just wondered if anyone here as any experience or knowledge about these, or know of any other methods that I can use to protect myself from harmful EMFs.

Andy
