See Interactive Map

Fire officials found three separate “points of origin,” all near the intersection of Silverado Canyon Road and Santiago Canyon Road. Two were on one side of the road, and the third was on the other. “Whoever did this knew what they were doing,” said Kris Concepcion, a fire authority battalion chief. Also, the fire traveled 3 miles in its first 20 minutes when it was ignited about 6 p.m. Sunday, he said.

I feel like somethings off...

I like how when the fire chief was asked if this could have been arson, he suggested that the person would have had to have been familiar with how a fire works, because typically a fire doesn't move as fast as it has been. And when asked to explain what he meant by being "familiar" with how a fire works, the anchor man had a sense of urgency in his voice immediately after the question was asked, and saying "Ok lets cut to Governor Schwarzenegger! "

But, I wanted to hear what the fire chief had to say about someone being "familiar w/fires"

I guess were just not supposed to know about that stuff!

Probably for our own good!

SHUSAFLYIN wrote:

Fishy --- so many fires suddenly starting? I notice the news is NOT mentioning WHY?

Fishy? No, it seems this is the way it is every year in California, especially October. The Santa Ana winds blow through every year in the fall, and if you have dry conditions and hot heat, the way they currently do, then boom, bad situation. Just off the top of my head thinking of two previous big SoCal October fires: there were the Laguna Beach fires of October 25, 1993, burned down a bunch of houses in Laguna Canyon. Then HUGE HUGE fires in San Diego County in 2003, exactly ten years later to the date, which burned down over 3,000 homes on something like 200,000 acres and killed 22 people. There were also fires burning at that time in Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear. Satellite images were all over the 'net showing all the smoke plumes from space. Now four years later here they are again, a near exact repeat of October 2003, same area of San Diego, as well as up in Malibu and again in the Lake Arrowhead area.

When you read the climate/weather reportings, some of these areas of California that are currently burning have apparently only had one inch of rain total since January. An inch of rain all year, and hot temperatures, and now with the raging Santa Anas, which btw if you're not from SoCal and are unaware, get up to 70 mph. So fires started and then they're jumping and spreading due to the winds, and firefighters can't get a grip on any of them due to the way the winds are blowing all crazy. They can't even get helicopters over them to drop water because the winds are so bad, so they've had to ground aircraft.

[On a sidenote, The drought situation is pretty bad in many parts of the country including the southeast. It's so warm here in Virginia that the fall leaf color turning is about 10 days behind schedule, and instead of turning colors many leaves are just turning brown, due to no rain for months. We also have restrictions on water useage and reservoirs are at 70-80% full. Georgia declared a state of emergency because they're going to supposedly run out of water. They only have less than 90 days of water left and are trying to figure out where they can truck it in, as well as considering desalinating the Atlantic ocean. I remember Stuart Wilde said about two years ago, "Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink. It's coming." Sounds like another Phoenix Days symptom to me. http://forum.noblerealms.org/viewtopic.php?id=5423 Things they are a changin'.............]

Falvion wrote:

and though we've had a few fire seasons that were scary and bad, I don't remember one like this. And it even rained last week... Yeah, something's off.

The October 2003 fires in the same area were worse than what's currently happening, from what I've been reading. With these current fires, so far "only" 700 homes have burned, in contrast to 10/03, where it was well over 3,000 homes burned. Also, the acreage burned so far is less than 2003, and there's only been one death, as opposed to 22 (or more) killed in 2003. BUT....no doubt, if things keep going at the rate they are, then this year may end up rivaling 2003 or even surpassing.

Stepping back and looking at the "bigger picture" though the fact that there were two major fires like this so close apart in years seems to say that these sorts of things are on the increase. It may become the norm. Living in SoCal is not a good idea in general imo, for a variety of reasons, not least of all their droughts and fires, earthquakes, smoggy skies, over population and freeways you can't even drive on anymore because you won't go anywhere, among other issues I originally had listed here but then decide to delete.

Being one who lives in fire country, I'd like to say thanks for the good thoughts.

Only one of the ten or twelve (?) fires that are burning are believed to be arson so far. The rest are wildfires, and this is wildfire season. It's not Southern California in autumn if there aren't at least a couple of wildfires.

But it is somewhat weird, Shusaflyin, that there are so many at once. I've been here eight years, and though we've had a few fire seasons that were scary and bad, I don't remember one like this. And it even rained last week... Yeah, something's off.

So keep sending good thoughts to those who've lost their homes, lives, and have been injured. We all appreciate it down here.

And do a little rain dance for us, or a wind-die-down dance.

Thanks, everyone.

Cheers
