Exactly.  While they may have picked these colors to use because they saw them as "power colors" or whatever, it doesn't matter.  Red, black and white have always been my favourite colors anyway.

Come to think of it, almost everything i read is BLACK on WHITE.

Oh, sorry, I'm being sarcastic here. I think taoyoyo has the right idea. Red is an obvious choice to add to the existing black/white color scheme. Try taking black and white and adding different colors. You'll probably find that red is one of the best choices.

from a graphic designer's point of view this is a very good, powerful combination. probably the best colors for ease of reading... black type on white paper is easy to read. as is white on black, red on white, white on red, red on black, black on red.

green on purple, purple on green... not so easy.

not only is it a powerful combination it would be a good budget choice for printing (black and 1 color, ie: red).

i designed a program guide for the jewish film festival here in atlanta which was red, black and white... looked bold and classy.

i understand that color is very expressive and can be used to give a mood or emotion. i would say that most designers are not deliberately using that color combination in any 'dark' fashion... the colors work so well together for the above reasons.

(we shall not bring up kraftwerk and the man machine album sleeve here! )

co-incidentally my soccer team (manchester united) play in these colors and are known as the red devils... i chose them as my team when i was 5 because i like the color red and the other two big teams in red were liverpool and arsenal... my mum used to make us eat liver and bacon (which i hated) and arsenal just sounded rude.

the band "the white stripes" uses only these colors on their records, in their wardrobe.  in an invterview i read, jack white just describes them as  being "power colors". 

i'm aware of the fascsist/nazi connection, and know a couple of satanists who use these colors in their art, etc. but i want to know the reason why these colors are chosen, or preferred over say, green and purple.

i have noticed a rise in others using the colors for business logos and in fashion, but before that i found that i had become, for lack of a better term "attracted" to this color combination and have planned our wedding attire based on it.
