Hello! I do thank you all for your suggestions! Also, some remedies I have read have been making a paste from brewers yeast and applying it to the pet, adding 1 tsp. brewers yeast daily to the pet's meal, adding 1 tsp. flax seed oil to the pet's meal for their skin and coat, and wild mint leaves spread about the home (mentha sylvestris), was told fleas can not stand mint, which may have something to do with the pennyroyal you mentioned treehugger. I have started Ruby on the brewers yeast added to her food, and the flax seed oil for her fur and skin. I will sprinkle either borax powder, which Lyra mentioned, or the dried pennyroyal leaves treehugger suggested. May I ask that you all send love to Ruby, she is a sweet dog! I thank you all:)

Ive used pennyroyal oil, and the dried herb. I would dilute the oil in water and rub all over the dog, let it sit for a minute or two and rinse (it smells like peppermint). I would sprinkle the dried pennyroyal herb all over the carpent and furniture (wherever the dog lays around, and dont forget under the couch cushions!) and leave for the day, and then vaccuum it up. Worked great! Most health food stores carry it, and its not as expensive as all those shampoos and sprays.

Yeah, I think it is the same for dogs. In fact it is something you even have to watch out for if you have both kids and pets, as the kids can catch worms in exactly that way.

As for a home remedy, garlic is quite good for keeping fleas at bay. Not sure how effective it is, but it is worth looking into. From what I understand you simply feed garlic in the food at regular periods. Not sure about getting rid of an infestation though. I do know that you can get flea traps fairly cheap. They are simply sticky paper in a plastic blow with a heat lamp above it. Supposedly attracts fleas from quite a distance.

When we first got my cat years back she had fleas. We gave her a flea shampoo, purchased from the pet supply store, then flea bombed the apartment (had to take her and leave for the 4 hours while it fumagated) That's not the best choice I'm sure, but it's the quickest. It's not that expensive. As an added measure I sprinkled borax powder into the carpet and then used a broom to disperse it all around. I was told that kills any remnants that may be embedded in the carpet? Not sure if it's true, but I did it nonetheless. After you let it sit for a few hours you vacuum it back out. Borax powder was cheap too, from the grocery store. With those three things we were flea free, they never came back. Then again she was an indoor cat anyway, but there weren't any leftover eggs or fleas that were still alive to spawn another generation and repeat the cycle. So it worked.

I know dogs are different from cats, but do they get worms from ingesting fleas the way cats do? When cats scratch and chew their flea bites they ingest the fleas and eggs which in turn are carrying the parasite round worm I think it is. It then shows up in their stool as what looks like pieces of rice. So then you have to buy the dewormer at the pet store. Not sure if it's the same for dogs, but something to look for in case it is....
