I know. It's mingboggling to me, too. Domestication programming is very strong and can be hard to break even with awareness. It's so successful that people don't even realize that most of their thoughts aren't their own or that they continually act against themselves. We can see the cumulative effects in the wider world view in which humans, against all logic, are destroying themselves and the planet. According to the Toltec view, humans are infected with a mind parasite. We received this parasite through "knowledge" and we pass it on through cradle to grave domestication programming which installs the filters through which all future input passes. This effectively blocks the "channel" between inner and outer self and sets up a circular dialog in which it becomes impossible to reach a rational conclusion. Thoughts just go round and round endlessly in so many voices we can't even tell which one is ours, and the voices continually tell us we aren't good enough and that we can't do this or that. It's very time and mental resource wasting to keep up with all the "rules", the big book o law that is that filter. And there's the feeling that if we don't obey the rules, we will be punished. For those people, it feels much safer to follow the herd as dictated by their programming.

Read The Voice of Knowledge and The Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz:
http://www.miguelruiz.com/fouragreements.html

I attend college classes w/ my paraplegic daughter ( scribing) -- one class this past year looked at societies, their different 'ways of knowing' -'view of others' - how they 'view, struggle against or accept change' - and the classic 'individual vs society" needs ... one day I nonchalantly mentioned how much 'planned plunder' the world was under and the prof just merely 'scoffed' and responded ' I just don't ever see any 'plots' or negative 'planning' -- it amazes me how these well-read profs who can recite pages of history/sources/ etc., refuse to acknowledge even the hint of conspiracy - and that 'word' sends them into a tiz ... the mass conditioning has been successful ...

"The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a conspiracy so monstrous that he cannot believe it exists."-- J. Edgar Hoover, long time head of the F.B.I.

Is this the reason the masses cant imagine and believe in all the conspiracy views? Is it indeed too monstrous and scary for many to accept? Or do the masses divert their attention to material and common pursuits without devoting any time to researching or reading "far out" books?

I am sure there are more reasons, just cant think of any now.
