What tree said. I have more than the number of dogs that is legal in my community, although I've heard that if some are inside only you can have more. I just don't give a rip what's legal or not. All of mine stay inside when I'm not at home, and I watch them like a hawk when they're in the back yard. When one has gotten out the animal control officer hasn't said diddly about me not licensing them with the city, nor have I been fined for not doing so. To me, it's none of their effing business what animals I have. Glad we don't have the microchipping mandatory. Yet.

Here in Virginia where I live, you dont have to have your dog microchipped. As far as vaccines, I do get my dog rabies shot, because of the liabilites, if she were to tangle with another dog, or bite anyone. Plus there have been numerous incidents with rabid wildlife here in the county, and Im not taking a chance if she were exposed. As far as the other vaccines, I really dont see them as necessary. And they arent, "required". She is supposed to be licensed with the county, but they can "bite my ass", where thats concerned. I live in a gated community, and they dont enforce the law pertaining to that. Maybe you might have to move to somewhere, where its not an enforced law.

hi everyone-so earlier this week i just adopted a new puppy as a companion for both myself and my older dog...this entire week has been spent frantically doing puppy things:training, taping electrical cords to the walls, removing chokable/chewable objects from his reach, etc. well, the one thing i forgot was to close the balcony door! my balcony is at the top of the steps that lead to the street so next thing i know i turn around and he is gone. the balcony door had only been open for a few minutes so i rushed out to find him. and then i see a police officer in the middle of the street holding his leash...but i am sooo relieved he is ok that for the moment this seems irrelevent and i run over towards him , saying i am so gld hes ok, and bend over to retrieve his leash.
and the police officer says to give the leash to her. my first response is a gut-level "im sorry i cant do that." and then she threatens to arrest me, impound my dog and call back-up! at this point, having dealt with police before, i realized that she was the type where if i kissed ass(i.e., be polite and respectful to someone who is completely disrespecting me and my dog) she would probaby give me my dog back...ugh. i was still prepared to remove his collar and take off though if that didnt work. eventually she gives him back, with the promise that in a month or two, another officer will return to check and make sure he has gotten a license. in order to get a license, the dogs have to receive several vaccinations as well as a microchip.
my dogs are not getting a microchip. i really dont want to give them a rabies vaccine either, after reading that it can cause seizures and agressive behavior. i do the best i can for their health--they eat nothing but organic raw meats so they just dont need all that. luckily i am moving at the end of july. but this incident has caused me to consider moving to a different city.
i am wondering if anyone else has attempted to refuse pet vaccines/microchips and if so, how did it go? any recommendations?
i dont have a lot of money, so a holistic vet that charges thousands of dollars really is not an option.
