But, of course the books I was reading don't exist. Very symbolic I suppose.

what i was trying to remember was in PKD's "Radio Free Albemuth"... there is a section where one of the characters is talking about reading some sort of bible-like book in a dream and PKD mentions that even if he couldn't remember what was read, it was stored in the unconscious mind; even if the conscious mind didn't remember it, or even couldn't read the words, they remain stored, possibly to be found later on.
not what i thought i was thinking of, but maybe. i read a lot so what i read tends to get mixed up.

This is going to sound strange, but I've had a couple of dreams where I've been reading not only in English, but in some other language that I could only understand in the dream. The other language was a real language, but my mind "translated" it into english for me. It's always in strange text-like symbols, and very ancient or alien. I never knew it was uncommon.

tengberg, I know what you're saying about getting excited and waking yourself up out of a lucid dream. What happens when I have that kind of dream experience is that I suddenly am aware that I'm thinking my own conscious thoughts (about my current life) whilst inside of another "world", and usually I'm "dreaming" through the perspective of that other person.... and I can "read" their thoughts and memories while being completely aware of my own thoughts (and make comparisons) at the same time. I never tried to "do" anything unusual, though, because I'm too fascinated by just being a "passenger" inside another's mind. But then again, maybe that would be more of an out-of-body type dream. I don't know.... I don't really make distinctions between them while it's happening.

lono,

a lot of people think that people cannot read in a dream.
i used to think that, based on an old episode of "BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES", in which the Mad Hatter traps Bruce Wayne in a dream state and while dreaming Bruce realizes that he can't read the book he just picked up and concludes that he must be dreaming and forces himself awake...something to do with the left brain/right brain and its conflicting function.
from what i have read and experienced, the way to achieve lucid dreaming is to "pay attention" to the contents of your dreams. if things seem a little more off than usual, a person acting a strange way or a talking cat or things out of the ordinary that you are able to detect...what happens to me is that i "see" something, think "oh, i'm dreaming" and then i get too excited and wake my self up. but after the realization, i am in control for a split second, then it feels like i am being pulled away from the dream world and i feel a slight impact when i awake.

Well, generally if you're able to read passages of "dream books" you're in a state of free-flow, which usually occurs at the tail end of sleep. Some pretty cool stuff can come out of this, but I think it depends upon how you think. If you think in words, then you'll probably dream in words at some point in your life. Generally though, you may see a word or two here, but those can convey complex ideas that usually will stand out more than the usual symbolic "actions" that we normally forget about.
It's just another means of communication. Some people dream in black and white, others can taste and smell while dreaming, and others tend not to remember anything whatsoever. As to why people don't remember their dreams, ultimately it comes down to the unflexibility of their assemblage point. This is not to suggest that people who "don't dream" are close-minded individuals, but rather their frequency is rather "locked in place". Anything that occurs beyond their normal range of perception cannot be absorbed by the conscious mind, but it doesn't really matter: even if you don't remember with the fullness of your memory, it doesn't matter. Even if you don't remember anything, it doesn't matter. What matters is that you act with integrity, honesty, and self-awareness. Dreaming can be helpful in that it is a tool some need and some don't. If you feel you need it but currently can't seem to get there, start with visualizing places you've been in your life. Start excercising those brain muscles. Meditate, flex your assemblage point.
The best dreams lead you to your Higher Self and eventually, the Source. But it takes time and/or necessity for these aspects to be reached.
All in due time.

Hi tengberg...

I know you're looking for a more psycho-analytical approach to interpreting your dream in the sense of why people read in dreams. Like you, i dont know all the reasons, they are often personal too. But if you remember what you've read in the dream the message itself may be one of the relevant considerations. The nature of the message itself might help you determine the value and origin of the message.

It seems the words in your dream ['Words and Sounds are Meaningless'] are trying to tell you something about the 'worthlessness' of words [ and sounds ]. I'm just a tiny bit struck by the irony of it. Funny how it took 'words' to try to get you to understand something eh? Might words therefore be useful?

Could be that the statement itself is meaningless. How would you know? Perhaps because whatever state of conciousness projected that little 'gem' into your dream awareness has used w-o-r-d-s. That means 'it' must find words valuable, meaningfull, useful to communicate concepts...

More than that, words and sounds have great power and are used to key you in to higher [ or lower ] states of conciousness [ depending on which words and sounds are used ]... [on that subject i'm going to post another thread on the 'Science of Sound' dealing especially with the subject of pop and rock music concerning it's dangers to the spiritual aspirant... I wonder how well that'll go down on this forum? Folks have all got their favourites haven't they.]

If the origin of your dream projection has used words and images [ which are sound anyway ] and they are meaningfull enough for 'it' to use, then words and sounds are meaningful for you too. In relation to the message itself, don't believe it.

Again tengberg, you were probably looking for something describing why people read in dreams. I would say a major reason is so that we can be informed by the message itself. Informed "of what" is a bigger question. What is the message trying to tell us.? And that question raises the question of the origin of the message. Has it come from the higher self?... or from 'beneath'? [ not to mention that intoxicants and bad diet can 'garble' our dreams ]
