There came a point in my life when I just stopped watching TV altogether - I hadn't joined this forum yet, I didn't consciously realise the mind-controlling effects of television, I just stopped because there were no programmes on there that interested me. Now, I actually CAN'T watch TV because it makes me feel so uncomfortable. My family all still do it, of course - you wouldn't believe the mind-numbing crap they watch, it's like the lowest form of entertainment. They watch all the soap operas & police dramas in which there's so much shouting, conflict and violence, it literally makes me feel tense if I'm the room when it's on. I'm sure other people would have a similar reaction to on-screen drama if they weren't so desensitized from watching it constantly.

As for the news... well, that's just fear-mongering in its purest form. When I ask my dad why he feels he has to watch the news, he says it's because he "needs to know what's going on in the world". Everyone says that, but they can't explain it any further. Why do you need to hear all this depressing, probably politically-biased news if it's of no consequence to your everyday life whatsoever, and only serves to bring you down?

My TV broke last year and I couldn't afford to buy a new one. So I just use the internet to download shows and films. I watch way less programming then I did, and I don't really miss it. The internet is much more useful to me then TV ever was. I use eMule rather then torrents because it's easier to find old shows, and the stuff on the network has consistently been higher quality then the Bittorrent versions.

Anyways for TV I use http://www.tvunderground.org.ru/index.php?show=show
And for films I use http://sharethefiles.com/forum/index.php

I'm currently downloading Northern Exposure, and it's great because of the effort and length of time it takes, it means that I only bother downloading good shows, instead of just switching on the TV and veging out.

I agree with Montalk here. I think that people who still wish to watch TV are getting a bit peeved at all the advertisements and crap that they have to pay $50 per month for and are canceling their cable and turning to the torrents and other uses of the Internet for their entertainment. I have seen many of my friends doing just this in the last 6 months.

The article didn't mention the two most obvious explanations: DVR (already mentioned on this thread) and the internet. People are spending less time watching TV, and more time being on the internet. There are online videos, music download, internet radio, p2p, instant messaging, emailing, browsing, shopping, ad blocking, blogging, alternative news, etc... compared to the same old one-way junk on the TV.

I just realized that the reason I've been lately accidentally staying up much later than I used to is because my schedule in the evening was entirely based on what TV show was on and I haven't been watching TV at all lately. The few days I do watch TV until I go to sleep I end up sleeping at a reasonable time, but almost never on days I'm not watching the "usual schedule" of what shows to watch. Not watching TV has actually had a fairly negative impact on my reality.
Now how messed up is that?
