It's very rare for a tornado to cause any serious damage over here, although I seem to remember a street in London getting quite badly hit earlier this year. I'm pretty certain we've never had a tornado strong enough to flatten an entire village/town. Usually it's just a few houses that get badly hit,  and it probably helps that almost all British homes are made from brick or stone so are less susceptible to damage than many US homes which are built from lighter materials such as wood.

Strangely enough, the UK actually has the most tornados per land area of any country in the world.

That's weird...I remember reading this article recently talking about some freak tornado that hit in England somewhere, maybe late last year sometime.  They made it seem like that sort of thing never happens there.  !  Maybe it wasn't that it was so rare for England but rather, that it was rare for the city where it hit.  Wish I could remember more of the details.  (anybody? anybody?  bueller?  bueller??)  I used to work with a girl from England who said that England got hit with its first ever hurricane in 1987, and that was supposed to be a big deal.  (watch, you produce some link that says England gets hit with more hurricanes per land area than any other country in the world, totally debunking my coworker's claim!  haha)  But I do recall a former NR poster from New Zealand, Alushe, mentioning that NZ had been hit with its first ever tornado.  (back in 2005 i think)  That was definitely odd.

I'd had no idea this happened since I'm getting relatively media-free and purposely cut off from what's going on.  After Marcus posted these I did a google search and pulled up the CNN article.  90% of the town is gone.  They said the tornado was about a half mile wide and there were something like 60 tornadoes on Saturday in that area.

Just yesterday I was reading the Mary Summer Rain book "Phoenix Rising," which are No-Eyes' prophesies for this time period.  (given back in 1982.)   One of the many prophesies involved weather, from rapid temperature inversion, wind storms, droughts and the return of the dust bowl, more frequent and powerful hurricanes, powerful ligtning and hail storms in summer, big blizzards in the winter...and more frequent and devastating tornadoes, and hitting where they don't usually hit.  Kansas is tornado alley, so it's not unusual for them to get popped, but this does seem to fit the part about more frequent, stronger tornadoes.
