I rented the Last Mimzy last night based on this conversation. Interesting how it wove into it so many themes - the nature of reality, creating ones own reality, beings from the future sending a message back to correct a mistake made....the way that nature came alive....extremely well done. Curious how it did at the box office. Seems like kids would have liked it, but maybe it was too deep and they're more interested in characters and "action."

I noticed that, other than the little girl, everyone else viewed the technology with suspicion.....horrifying how the AFT raided the home. with their riot gear on.

Some years ago, I had a strange experience where I was compelled to write a poem set in the future....one of peace, abundance, happiness....the kind of world pictured in the movie. By then the world that we know now...the one of endless war and negativity and selfishness was just a distant memory. But that some of us had seeded that world with deep, passionate and unwavering love, not unlike the love the little girl felt for Mimzy.

Wonderful film. If you have kids, a great alternative to almost everything else out there.

I loved it! A friend had told me she read the original sci-fi short story, "Mimsy Were the Borogoves", which the movie is based on. I had to go research that after the movie, since there was a reference to "Alice Through the Looking Glass". If anybody is familiar with Dan Burisch, ( http://www.eaglesdisobey.net ) in kind of runs parallell with some of his story.

It was kind of sad though that the parents didn't believe their kids. Shoogie mentioned the spiral thing, when I saw that in the movie it reminded me of the 'golden mean', also known as the 'God ratio', 'Golden ratio', etc. I remember drawing this 'golden mean' in my architect class in college.

Never having been to one before, I thought it might be fun to take my daughter to the sneak preview of this yesterday since she was keen to see it, too. So we set off an hour early just in case it was packed. It wasn’t. And although we weren’t the first ones there either we did manage to score a couple of great seats. (She thought hers was the best in the house but I assured her that it couldn't be since mine, in fact, was the best, heh heh).

By the way, this isn’t a movie review per se. I don’t want to write any spoilers. Besides, I’m not a savvy enough movie-goer for that sort of thing. I just thought I’d share some of my observations. Like I said, I half expected a huge turnout but in the end the theatre was filled to about a third of its capacity, maybe a little more. The audience consisted entirely of families with kids ranging from preschool to preteen. The previews included regular old commercials, music videos and what I thought were age-appropriate movie trailers. Plus there was a brief interview with Gina Gershon to promote her upcoming book and film “Camp Creepy Time”. It’s (get this)…

…about a young boy who's sent to a summer camp. He discovers that the haunt is little more than an alien-run smuggling operation. And the camp counselors are turning children into monsters, and shipping them off to zoos on planets around the solar system.

...which elicited several loudly exclaimed “Oohs!” and a tremor of muted mumbling from the darkness. But that all quickly subsided. As soon as the movie started the whole theatre went absolutely quiet without a single “shush!!!”, “sit still!” or “be quiet!” uttered by anyone and I swear, it stayed that way through the entire show. Well, there was one exception when the little pig-tailed girl in front of me fell off her chair. She was literally on the edge of her seat. LOL. I also got a kick out of a couple of comments made by the parents behind us, like when they asked their daughter, “if that ever happened to you, you’d tell us, wouldn’t you?” and “I hate it when it’s only kids that can see it!”. But ya, everyone was totally enthralled. And unlike Bridge to Terabithia, I only checked the time once in the hopes of being able to make it through to the end without using the facilities (which I unfortunately couldn’t...I knew I shouldn't have sucked back that massive pop!), instead of wondering how much longer before it was over.

Without going into any detail, I was alternately chilled, moved, excited, awestruck, inspired and tickled by this show. I loved the characters, the story, the special effects, the music, all of it! And yes, it is rife with fringe concepts and all things metaphysic (plus a few personal synchs thrown in for good measure) so I doubt it will have mass appeal. Even if it’s a feel–good movie I bet a lot of people will be uncomfortable with it, which is too bad. My daughter said it was the best movie she’d seen in her life. We had a great time together and both of us left in high spirits. Afterwards, when I asked her if she thought any of it was actually possible, she gave me an emphatic, “Yeah!”. Then I asked her which part. She thought about it for a moment and then said, very matter-of-factly, “All of it”.

So with that I'll leave you with some Roger Waters and my hope that this one "spreads like wildflowers".

Hello (I Love You)

Have you heard
it was on the news
your child can read you like a bedtime story
Like a Magazine
Like a has-been out to grass
Like afternoon T.V.
Why is my life going by so fast.

Hello I love you
Is there anybody in there?
Put down the phone
Shut up the shop
Make all their techno babble stop
We'll find a short-waved frequency
the wave connecting you and me
Hello I love you

Have you heard
it was on the news
the general staff can't figure out
is this campaign win or lose
Life is long but it goes fast
the kids will have to separate
their future from our past

Hello I love you
Is there anybody in there?
the ghosts are walking by my side
I feel their love I feel their pride
For I have built a bridge or two
bridges between me and you
Hello I love you

Have you heard
it was on the news
you can make your peace
on the dark side of the moon
I'll see you there
we can rock 'n' roll
we can make our choice
we can say goodbye or say hello

Hello I love you
Is there anybody in there?
hello hello hello hello hello etc.
Is there anybody in there?
Is there anybody in there?

Hello I love you
Is there anybody in there?
