The first step is out of the way. The being completely honest with self. I'm certainly not in a position to give advice but I could tell you what I would do.

I would start identifing every aspect I found that I wished to change. I would not add negative connotations to anything I found. That just adds weight and makes it harder to tranmute the thing. No judgement just identification and the wish to create something new within self. And that did make it easier for the things that I have and still do work on about self. That is wanting to create something new and not necessarily wanting to get rid of something.

With the parents thing, I would add a thought guard that would wake me up whenever those thoughts came. I would also watch for the associated feeling. Then I would make a mental note of the thought, situation that caused it, and the associated feeling.

I wouldn't try to stop the thoughts/situations/feelings (TSF) right away. I would only become more and more aware of them. Like a treasure hunt I would seek out every last one. I would examine them all thoroughly.

This process automatically made it easier to start seeing these slightly before they actually happened. By the act of objective scruity one ensures a disconnect of emotion that takes the charge (bite) out of the TSF. This makes it less attached to self. Add this with being able to see slightly before the TSF happens and you can, in a calm nonchalant manner, choose to create a new reaction not born of wanting to get rid of anything but simply the want to create new and experience more of self.

tengberg, we all are a product of our childhood. Our parents can have a great impact on who we are as adults. But that isnt always a bad thing. Although my father wasnt the greatest father in the world, he's still a great guy. I found myself many times saying things to my kids, that he said to me when I was a kid. Kids dont come with instruction manuals. And I know my father raised me with the parental skills that he learned from his parents. He did the best he could. Just as I have done. Im not going to sit here and resent my dad for all the crappy things he did to me. That's water over the falls. Has nothing to do with my life now. My son went thru a period of asking me "why did you do this" and "why did you say that to me" and "that really messed with my head". I could only answer at times that I was sorry, and yes maybe that was the wrong thing to say at that time. Nobody's perfect, we all make mistakes, and use poor judgment at times, according to whats going on in our environment. I tried my best. Get over it, move on. Would it really hurt you to shovel snow for your folks? Maybe they feel uncomfortable asking neighbors, knowing they have a perfectly capable son in the area. Dont be so sure those people you think are, "their own persons" arent going thru the same things in their heads as you are. At 50yrs of age, I still occasionally hear my dad's voice in the back of my head. Sometimes I listen, sometimes I dont! The thing is, here and there my dad had good advice, and I wish I had listened at times. Im sure your folks have only your best interest at heart. I have a daughter your age who is married and has kids. I cringe a lot at some of her decisons. But I keep my mouth shut, and only give advice when asked. Its very difficult not saying anything at times, believe me! I have to keep in mind its her life and her choices. And yes its hurts if my kids dont call me on my birthday!! Dont be so hard on yourself. Im sure you are not a scumbag, otherwise this all wouldnt be bothering you. You really didnt say what kind of relationship you have with your parents.

so, today i have been thinking of who i am. i notice my self exhibiting the traits and tics of my parents, and that sort of...distresses me? i find my self saying what my father would say in a situation, or reacting like my mother would. then the second after i speak or react, i think "man, what the hell? that's not how i wanted it to go. that's not how i really feel." but by then it's too late, the transaction has ended and my part has been played out. so i remind my self to keep mindful of my self and my thoughts.

i look in the mirror and see my father's eyes and my mother's nose. my grandfather's receding and thinning hairline that morphs into my father's haircut. i drive my car and notice i hold the wheel like my father. i don't laugh aloud, because it sounds like my mother's laugh and would sound too feminine, although the people i laugh around don't know my mother so it wouldn't matter, right?
i tried too hard to not be my parents, deliberately doing things i knew they would disapprove of. yeah, i know, that's what teenage angst and rebellion is all about, but see, when i was a teenager i wanted to talk back to them and act like a "normal" teenager, but i knew they would be upset with me, so i kept it inside. then i started drinking and it came out in violent outbursts at my friends, who really weren't my friends, but people who kept me around to entertain them with my childishness and drunkenness.
by the time i started to assert my self, it was too late. my mother would say, "do what you want, you're x years old, i can't stop you." great. thanks mom. they never encouraged me to pursue anything and told me "you don't want to do that", but now, i'm still looking for their approval and no matter what i do they are still at the back of my mind. it's strange, when i read or watch a movie i observe the characters and think "hey, it's them acting, not their parents. hank rearden is his own man, tyler durden does what he wants (sort of), joel parrish acts on his own...."
yes, i know, they are fictional characters, but you get my point i hope. it's the same when i wait on customers or am out with friends; they are their own persons, but i hear my parents' voices before my own thoughts. even now, one of them will call me and ask me to come over and shovel snow. even though they have neighbors that would do it for them. what if i lived in a different state? then what would they do?
listen to me. i sound like such a heel, don't i? i'm supposed to be the good son. but is that all that i am? all that i will ever be?
what about me? is that being "selfish"? what's wrong with wanting my own life?

okay. now, i am going to go and shave and shower because i feel and look like a scumbag.
i wish you all the best and maybe i'll get some sort of response and we can talk about this thing.

-ERT

so now i'm thirty-1 and still going through periodic episodes of teen angst; it's no wonder i feel like i'm going crazy.
