seeker wrote:

Nader is in with the lawyers lobby, which is part of the reason he is against big business. He'd like to file lawsuits against them to make more money. He also has accepted donations from the Republican party, the very people he's trying to bring down. That comes across as hypocritical to me. Of course, I realize there is a part of Nader that is genuinely looking out for the public. After all, he was a huge 'consumer advocate' back in the day. However, these days I think he's looking out mainly for himself.

Not to get involved in politics, but on a personal note. Nadar is the only "politician" running for president that I've actually learned something from. It says something to me, in this day and age, when one can actually stand the sight and sound of anyone at or attempting to be at the highest executive level. That said, most of these 'people', and I use the term loosely, are profoundly disillusioned individuals. Many walk and talk like a robot might do, were a robot allowed to run for office. And no wonder, given their primp and pressing -- careful preparation for "show-time", "screen-time", and "press-time". What about off-time? Do they talk the same, think the same, express themselves the same?

My brother one said about his future-wife, "If she loves and appreciates me at my absolute worst, then she deserves to be with me at my best." The point is, we've never known most of these candidates or our presidents or leaders in the past to have a "worst moment". They don't allow themselves to express that to the public. It's often more meaningful to know someone's shining moment relative to their moment of shame. This is a human experience, one with different phases and different cycles of being.

These robots are so boring.

aaron-- Forgot to reply about Nader... I thought I read somewhere that Nader was working to help some corporate lobbies. I was mistaken, and I apologize. I searched on google and all I found was what I said so far. BTW, the Republicans are helping Nader because they know he can take votes away from Kerry, leaving the 'left-wing' votes more split bewteen the two.

And you stay outta mine, lyra! Just kidding. Seriously, that was pretty cool. A little telepathy never hurt anyone. Maybe you and I should experiment a bit with it sometime.
P. Diddy is a sold-out, talentless judas goat (Wu-Tang got the thang!). "Die or Vote"? Up yours, Puffypants. "Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death!" "Don't Tread On Me!" Puffy's gonna be playing holiday inns next year (the mc hammer circuit), the dumbass dawg.

Seeker, I've never met an African-American who wasn't antibush from the start. Like them, I saw through that weenie smirk when he first hit the stage. (I took Noam Chomsky's Intellectual Self-Defense Course.) And what does it matter whether vote tallies are manipulated or not? The fix is in at the top, not the bottom. I will admit, though, that if Julie Delpy showed up at my home and wanted me to come with her to vote, I'd not only go, but I'd vote however she said. We're talking Real Incentive there .

Added: Seeker, explain how not voting contributes to the problem. Please. And just because your vote means something to you, how does that make it count?

bush "probably didn't deserve it" has got to be the understatement of the century.

lyra-- Those are great things to do, but why not in addition to casting a vote? You can do both and still be a great activist. I mean seriously folks, it's not that hard to go to a booth and pull a lever. Even if it does mean nothing, at least you contributed your opinion. There are all sorts of candidates to choose from. Write-ins are allowed. Hell you can write in Mickey Mouse as a protest vote, just to make some ballot-counter's day. You'll even make someone laugh at the same time. Not voting doesn't prove anything and only contributes to the problem.

aaron-- yes, my vote counts, because I'm voting for a philosophy I believe in. It's my own protest and activism rolled into one. And like I said, Bush got elected by a sneaky underhanded move and probably didn't deserve it, but this only happened because the vote was close.

I think it's great that P Diddy is trying to get people to vote, but he's doing it the wrong way. Interestingly, the black community (I certainly don't mean to generalize or discriminate but there is truth to this...) has become extremely anti-Bush over the past couple years. And that is saying alot considering the majority of black Americans already vote democrat. Believe it or not, there is shared sentiment among many blacks that the 9/11 attacks were an inside job. There is even a new hip-hop song that blatantly claims Bush as responsible. This song gets radio play here in New York City, mind you! That is saying a lot. I can easily see the election going to Kerry, but it's not as if that's good in any way. Same shit, different style. Que sera sera?

Seeker, how can Nader be a corporate puppet when you say he wants to file lawsuits against big biz to make more money. I don't understand. Also, when one runs for public office, campaign funds are welcomed from any source. I'm not sure what scenario would have the republican party contributing to Nader's campaign. Can you be more specific on this?
Your final paragraph is an echo of what I've heard all my life. But it's absolute nonsense. I exercise my "right to vote" by abstaining, a perfectly legitimate use. By abstention, I use my vote to show that I do not accept the system as it is. I use the time I would waste on registering, reading the liars' brochure, and going to the polls to educate myself and others on the absurdity of the american pissing contests known as politics. My "vote" counts in the real world. Will yours? By the way, how can you say that "elections are not completely fixed, YET"? How do you think shrub got in?

I'll probably vote, too. It's the principal of the thing. And it may help in the future we all hope for where the votes are not fixed. But it's certainly says something alarming when most people do not vote. I know things are fixed, but if anyone asks me if how I voted, I want to be able to show them a piece of paper and say "this should count for something.
And if we want a free country let's MAKE it count. That's our right."

Of course, with computers there's likely a reciept, which may mean nothing. But it's my right and I'm damn well going to do it! Even if I'm just dancing in the dark.

But P.Diddy and the like, do not make me want to vote, but make me want to avoid the whole thing. It makes me think they are counting on the smart people not voting, too.
I don't know exactly what to think, but I believe Not Voting is a valid way to state your conscience too.
