WEOPPOSEDECEPTION wrote:

Tomatochip, I can surely identify with your story. I moved to Gilbert, AZ 6 yrs ago from Long Island, NY. For a long time I considered it to be the worst blunder I ever made. However when I made the move I was not in good shape and deteriorating rapidly. My life has improved markedly since then. It was easy to blame all my failings on the new location. The grass looks greener looking back (especially if you're in the desert). I also would like to remove myself from the ratrace, maybe when my daughter finishes high school in 4 yrs.

Interesting, WEPOPPOSEDECEPTION. I have considered that the physical characteristics of the Arizona desert to be a mirror of what happens INTERNALLY to those living here. At least, to those who have the awareness to consider it. What I mean is, Arizona is a desert. It's dry, it's wide open spaces, it has no trees to hide behind. It's in the direct light of the sun. I have found in relation to my own life, that all these characterists can be applied to my internal life since living here. Things that I would have wished to hide from were impossible to hide from.... they were illuminated and right in my face! Of course, this inability to hide and being forced face my 'demons' faciliated accelerated internal growth, and a kind of 'hardiness'. Much like the characteristics of desert plants, like cactus that must withstand the harshest extremes of the elements. There also is an 'openness' here, spiritually speaking, that I didn't find back east. An open-mindedness. I REALLY notice it when I go back and visit old friends and/or familly. After ten years, It's a huge difference in perception that I have integrated. Interesting correlation of outer topograpy mirroring inner landscape, is it not?!!?

"Wanting to be free of emotions". I always had problems relating to my feelings. It was like the feelings spoke a different language. I was intimidated and afraid of them, so they must be controlled or they will get out of hand. I learned that suppressing feelings is not the answer, if you lock your servants in the basement and rule them with an iron fist they will rebel and burn your house down. Many say that all emotion follows thought, however I have many times when I just wake up feeling horrible for no reason or during the course an otherwise unremarkable day. Could it be unconscious triggers?
This morning I was exploring my feelings, some strong and unpleasant ones were there. I thought about when I used to go boating I used to call the weather/marine channel to get sea conditions. Choppy, calm, stormy, I had no control over what is was but I could decide whether to go out or not and what precautions to take. Sometimes I would just stay in the harbor. It would eventually calm down so I could go out. If all is one then we are the water and the emotions are the waves.

I grew up in upstate NY, in a little town called South Wales, with a pop. of about 500. I grew up where it was laid back, slow, and everybody said hello. Most people I know or came in contact with came from the same situation. Yes, NYC and Long Isalnd, have a different menatality from upstaters. Yes, Im sure that the influx of people from the BIG cities in the northeast has had a major impact on Fla. You can move anywhere from what your accustomed to and find a problem with the natives of the area, or vice-versa. Yes, northerners are a different stock of people, you have to be tough to survive those awful winters! After 10yrs of living in Virginia, I have yet to see the "southern hospitality" from any of the natives. But I wouldnt say a bad thing about them. When I moved to Guam, I had major culture shock. If you were standing in line at the store elderly Guamanians would walk to the front of the line. They would cut right in front of you. Rude, huh? But that was their custom. Elderly people were shown great respect. If you invited a native to your house for say, dinner, if you told them 6pm, they might show up at 8pm if you were lucky. That ws called Guamanian time. Did I find it rude? At first yes, but, hey it was their island, it was their customs. But on the whole, they were very giving, sweet people. You are going to find rude people no matter where you go. Everybody has a certain rhythm they're accustomed to, they're conditioned to. But we can go round and round here. I have many neighbors and friends from NYC and Long Island and they are gracious and kind people. The people next door from Michigan are the rudest, as far as Im concerned, in the neighborhood. But Im not going to say ALL people from Mich. are rude and ignorant. Its unfortunate that certain people give the rest a bad reputation. Having lived for 50yrs, with all diferent types of people and in different places, I still wouldnt say a "certain" group of people are worse than any other. So, hey, everybody here has made good points. Opinions are like a**h*les, everybody's got one!:) Im just throwing mine in here!

Am I that impressionable?" I want personal soverignty over myself and be responsible for myself because it just feels great knowing that if you messed up, you messed up and knowing that I don't have to blame anyone but myself kicks ass! I'm weird, but that's how I feel.

Anyway, I accumulated junk over the years that I almost forgot who I really am. To give you a real life example from a few weeks ago, I went to Kmart to pick up a few cleaning products. So I went to the cash register and had this really nasty cash register lady and I paid with a debit card. I asked her for cash back and she said "No cash back!" in a really nasty attitude, but I had a feeling she was being a spiteful c*nt for whatever reason, so as I swiped my card, I pressed the cash back button and LO AND BEHOLD there were tons of $10s, $20s in the drawer. She told me "Didn't I tell you NO?" and I told her "yeah, but for some reason, it just didn't make any sense." I used to be a cash register person at a liqour store, so I know that even if you have cash in your drawer, you don't give them away until the manager puts more, but she had such a nasty, nasty attitude and called her a "b*itch". She was a typical New Yorker. VERY TYPICAL. Did I feel guilty later on? Sort of, but not really at the same time because I don't have time for that sort of behavior, especially when I was nice and going about my day. I guess my ego reacted to her "classy" behavior. Ego work takes time. Baby steps. But, for this particular example, it's better that I said what I said than paid and left and let that incident stew in my little head and then take it out on my family and friends, who are the real people that care for me. Then again, I provided free food to "the matrix" lol.

oceanroar wrote:

think about it logically too -- when you see yourself in the present as you are - and there's no sense of "i must change - i must discipline myself" - so there's no pressure - no feeling of "i'm not good enough" - you are what you are - and that is FINE - whatever it happens to be -- maybe it's that something "divine" in us human beings - intelligence - call it whatever - it sees - we are a part of it - it/we understand(s) -- i don't know exactly how the mechanism for psychological change works - i couldn't break deconditioning down into a scientific formula -- except in the way that i was trying to describing above - because to me, observation in the sense of being able to see yourself as you are, without distortion - that's caring - there's no fear when you can do that - it makes for understanding of the self - and when one understands oneself - one understands others as well ...

so that's my rant ... apologies for heading off topics - so back to the tropics of vibes of places ...

I don't think there's anything wrong with disciplining yourself, if the long term goal will be beneficial and positive for you and others, too. If I had not stop eating doritos and drinking 2 snapples a day, God knows how I would look like and my state of health would be. But observing and allowing yourself to just be without judgement is great, as long as you catch those nasty little critter thoughts/emotions that come out of nowhere because they love to breed in your mind/body. I don't know, maybe I am harsh on myself sometimes, but I can't allow myself to let myself go and become a mess. I do live in the moment, but I can't ignore what's going on and let it be if I have the power to change something that's unpleasant in the now. Does that make sense? I don't want to re-learn annoying lessons ever again.

I also would like to remove myself from the ratrace, maybe when my daughter finishes high school in 4 yrs.

i agree with what was said (by at least Lyra - didn't read all the posts in detail) about the fact that it's both the environment around us and also what's inside us that counts - or course it's both - it's all one field and we're a part of that field - and so are others - and sometimes, no matter what's going on inside you - a place can be totally creepy and affect you ...

on a more-than-semi-related note, i have a story to share: maybe 4 or 5 years ago -- we were going out with some friends to a club to dance - it was a friends birthday, i think -- but we were a multi-cultural crew - there was me (brown guy), 2 asian guys, a caucasian guy, an arabic guy, his two sisters and his caucasian girl friend. When we were done at the club and heading back to the parking lot we bumped into another crew - all brown guys -- we started talking - we were split up - some of us were a little ahead - some a little back - but our two groups merged ... the people i was with - we were just talking about the night and what we'd done - where we went, etc. -- the people a little ahead - i remember hearing one of the people from the other group make comments about white girls - and how he felt that canadian girls were all ho's - he was being really negative and it also wasn't hard to tell that he was quite intoxicated - apparently he'd been offended by a woman or young lady who happened to be white - and so now, he was totally unhappy with 'white chics' -- and my arabic friend with his white girl friend were talking to this guy - and my friends' girlfriend was trying to talk to the guy and tell him that not all white chics are bad or like that - but the guy was being rude - and said something to like "you're all the same *#*$*#"
so of course - my friends' girlfriend gets offended - and she said something back to him - calling him an ignorant *#**$ or something ... and the next thing you know - she gets punched in the face ... and that's when a big-ass fight broke out between us ... ever single person in that crowd was fighting ... everyone except me ... i didn't move -- no one came towards me -- i was just sort standing there, half in disbelief, wondering what the hell was going on - but in no way affraid of the situation - it was so strange because i felt so removed from it all, even as it was happening ... the cops were there (they're always downtown patrolling, esp. on weekends @ night in club-district) ... but they didn't do a thing - they also watched ... and crowds of people were gathering around - they whole spectacle turned into a magnet of sorts ... some people who weren't even a part of this thing jumped in (the streets were crowded 'cause lost of people were leaving as the clubs were closing) - some people who'd jumped in were trying to stop the fighting some were involved with the fighting ... eventually - i started thinking to myself - i gotta stop this ... i don't exactly remember what happend - but i just remember no one coming towards me and me not wanting to be any part of what was going on around me ... eventually our group pulled away and ran to our cars -- i remember one of my friends lost his cell phone -- i went back with another friend after things had died down a bit to try and find our friends' phone - we didn't - but some people recognized us who were standing around - these two girls i remember - they both smiled at me and one asked me how i was doing - i wasn't sure i was getting the attention but i smiled back and said fine ... but that was a situation in which maybe because of me being me at the time and the way i was - i didn't get involved in any of the fighting - and on one came towards me - or maybe it was because i was also brown and the other crew was all brown, so they left me alone -- or maybe it was just a fluke - i have no idea ... whatever the case - this thread made remember this incident ...

proto wrote:

...
Couldn't have said it better, especially about the subway.
