some people would say discipline is about control, about training with a given pattern, maybe ... & some people would say discipline is about learning for oneself - through observation with no 'holdsbar' ... the latter would be how i would use the word 'discipline' ...

NM - you mentioned how K said, "all control is in that direction" with regards to the story about the Monk who had his unit operated on in order to find god ... (oh man !)

in regards to desire - just to re-iterate for myself - i see 3 lines of movement ...

1) as desire comes about and i have an urge for something - i can take action to satisfy my urge
2) as desire comes about - 1st through visual perception - i can watch its movement quietly - without any action, without trying to control the movement, without pushing it away or holding on to it -- (i would call this discipline)  ...
3) as desire comes about - i can try and control it

i'm looking at all this and seeing how desire can lead to a fragmentary way of being ... how desire can affect and over-take the psyche in certain respects ... so my interest is balance but i'm looking at what balance isn't ...

Option #2 i think is the "middle ground" and probably the hardest of the 3 (from my own experience) to stay with ... i've done it before in the past but i've slipped sometimes ...

What if all humans sought, with urgency all the time, to satisfy their specific desire at that moment?  If there was no self-imposed discipline at all, what would it look like?  And, would it be beneficial, to anyone?

Thanks for the video.  Great insight on the nature of "self" control.

I like how he said "all control is in that direction".  Makes me think of the control limitations we've put on ourselves growing up as kids.  Like was was right/wrong, cool/uncool and any other dualistic perspective you can think of.  It's funny.  We can read books like A Brave New World and say "OH well, that can never happen to us" or take the book out of proportion.  We actually read that book in school, but I don't think anyone, even the teacher, understood its metaphors.

So the question then becomes, should there be any self disciplines at all?  Or a balence between desire and discipline?  Or maybe acting straight out of insight/instincts?
