Learned something interesting about South Carolina this morning actually. I was reading through a book called "Gateway to Atlantis" by Andrew Collins, and in it he discusses impact craters from space objects, and there are apparently thousands of impact craters located all over South Carolina, as well as neighboring states. But the author focuses mostly on the craters of SC, known as the Carolina Bays.

Some excerpts regarding these mysterious "bays" of South Carolina:

------

"[the landscape] was quite literally pockmarked with hundred of elliptical depressions, some so large that they dwarfed surrounding agricultural fields. There were elongated dry 'bays', a local term used to denote depresssions, as well as huge egg-shaped lakes and ponds, some superimposed on others....

"Melton and Shriever concluded that there were at least 3,000 of these shallow, perfectly formed depressions, almost all of them orientated north-west. In their estimates they covered an area of around 160,000 square kilometres and could be found in three separate states: Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. At the south-eastern end of many of those examined was a pronounced sandy rim, often up to two metres in height. This was indicative of the low trajectory of the incoming meteorites which must have appeared in quick succession, accounting for the overlapping of bays. In their final opinion, the bays represented an immense crater field produced by a whole 'swarm' of ojbects which had approached from the north-west and struck the American south-east between 50,000 to a million years ago.

"...it is now known that there are an estimated half a million such depressions, in at least six states. Aside from Georgia, North and south Carolinas, they are also to be found in other bordering states such as Maryland, Virginia and Florida. Their frequency is astonishing. One area of Bladen County, 8 kilometres by 6.4 kilometres, has a 67 per cent covering of bays. Other areas of the Carolinas have as much as 50 percent bay cover. No fewer than 140,000 of these are of moderate to large size, with lenghts of more htan 152.4 metres. One of the biggest depressions is Big Swamp bay in central South Carolina, which is 6 kilometres from one end ot the other. Other examples found nearby are small by comparison, measuring between 91 and 122 metres in length. By contrast, there is even evidence of bays over 11 kilometres long.

"Many of the depressions are elongated in shape, while others, usually much smaller in size, are almost circular. Yet there is a definite pattern to their appearance, orientation and arrangement, which varies in accordance with their placement."

----

The consensus is that these are impact craters, but rather than meteors, they were fragmented asteroid in nature.

Anyway, some pics I found online of these South Carolina bays/ impact craters:
