Like Napster before it, WinMX relied on certain "host" servers that kept the rest of the network running. When the company shut those down, it killed the entire network. So somebody came along and patched the software to look at a different server as the host, and presto ... network is back up. Before it was shut down, WinMX was HUGE ... I never bothered with Kazaa or any of the others while WinMX was up because there literally was no need. You could find just about anything on WinMX. Now that its' been down for a month or two, the only question is: how many people will bother to get back online with this new version? And if they do, will the new host end up shutting it down again soon due to legal pressure?

Xenopope wrote:

how does the level of 'warez' and 'spyware' bundled with WinMX compare with other p2p apps.

The original WinMX had no spyware, adware etc. This new patched release comes from a different source, so I checked it with my antivirus system and it came up clean, then ran anti-spyware after installing it and still was clean.

I use Spyware Doctor, which is one of the better anti-spyware apps out there at the moment, according to the reviews I've read. I use it in conjunction with my antivirus program and feel relatively secure between the two of them.

Shut down, huh? Sounds interesting because that's what people always say can't happen to p2p nets because . . well because they're p2p! So . .. how did this one get 'shut down'? Unless it was just a routine maintanence or whatnot . .

Also, how does the level of 'warez' and 'spyware' bundled with WinMX compare with other p2p apps. like Kazaa or others? I had a version of MX installed on my machine but never used it since I just used Kazaa or DC.
