In the game, the dark forces play their parts well and are too powerful to be destroyed; they must be met and transformed through compassionate understanding of their purpose. From a larger vista of understanding, it takes a highly evolved being to take on the role of evil so as not to become indefinitely entrapped in the character. The controllers are actually important players in the game of freedom; they rule by psychological and spiritual manipulation because humanity refuses to confront its collective fear of remembering the past. Even with their power over humanity, the controllers are lonely and lacking in truth and trust. And the risk of entrapment remains ever present.

As I typed that out, it occurred to me that their obsession with accumulating financial wealth is probably a compensatory measure for that inner emptiness...

I would assume the same is true of people who are out of the mainstream in other ways, i.e. ethnic minorities, gays, etc. (These people, by and large, are also "low on the totem pole" of hierarchy.) It took some time for me to really grok on a deep level, that who and what I am cannot be truly limited or even defined. This was a turning point in my detachment from the illusion of duality, and it relates to what impatiens said about polarity having its roots in not knowing who we are...

Edit: It's interesting that only when I was able to finally take a neutral stance toward my deafness, seeing it as neither good nor bad but simply as experience, that I was able to resolve this in harmonious manner (cochlear implant surgery, a "bionic ear"). I still don't have perfect hearing, but can now hear birdsong, talk on the phone, and just hear better in general, which is enough of a resolution for me.

And I still have the "silence option" when I turn off my sound processor.
By now I've realized that's quite a blessing! Just goes to show that nothing is really negative or positive in itself, it's all in our perspective...
