Headaches and other things. Yet they refuse to have an open mind about it, won't look an any material that isn't funded by nutrasweet. I went so far as to use their 2 litres as archery tagets.

Its amazing that, at many of the "get togethers" I go to, people will make desserts and such with aspertame (sugar-free) products, and not tell you, thinking they are doing you a favor. My 3 kids and I have never been able to eat or drink anything with that stuff in it. It feels like our tongue is swelling when we do. I have a sweetener that I buy that is made from mung bean leaves. You can also bake with it. But I would never ever use it without TELLING somebody that is wasnt regular cane sugar.

I rarely, I mean rarely, ever consume aspartame, but the other day I tried a mini microwave low-cal popcorn bag because it was the only thing I had left in my food drawer at work. I was mildly hungry when I ate it, and I did not care for the taste, as it was loaded with aspartame (on popcorn? yuck!) but I needed something to eat so I finished it. About five minutes later I had sharp hunger pangs. The popcorn made me hungrier!!! That's doubly bad given what Aquarius posted about it causing obesity even without increased food intake.

I don't trust any artificial sweeteners. They taste bad and even if they weren't harmful in and of themselves (which I believe they are), I believe their use helps train people into wanting everything unnaturally sweet.

I agree it's difficult to get people to stop aspartame. I'm not sure why -- maybe because more mainstream health advice is to replace sugar with aspartame (as if one MUST have sweetener). I don't watch TV, so I don't know what kind of persuasion is occurring there.

Congratulations Aquarius on your improved health!

StarCat, interesting point about the taste. While I definately agree with you, I've come across a few people in my life that swear that they actually prefer the TASTE of diet drinks compared to their sugary counterparts. Makes ya wonder. Personally even the thought of consuming chemicals like aspartame and flouride makes me sick, and if I chew gum or brush my teeth I can't help but feel bad for doing so, and feel the need to apologize to my physical body.

I've noticed that it's almost impossible to buy gum that doesn't have aspartame now. While I don't want to be paranoid, it seems to be that there is almost a conspiracy to convert as many products to contain aspartame as possible. I remember a time when you could buy the conventional big brand gums and they hadn't yet been affected by this trend. Ahh the glory days of relatively safe gum chewing!

I have a bit of a weakness towards Dr. Pepper as it is just so damned tasty. I noticed something a while back, up here in Canada, not sure how it is in the US, they started marketing and selling Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper, but only in Diet form! Almost like they are putting something out with "specialty" flavours to make you interested, but only release it in diet form so rots your brain alongside your gut.

I'd say that I would stick to water only, but even that is fluorinated, can't escape this pernicious chemical force feeding it seems....

Hi,

Recently I sent this email to a researcher who is an 'expert' on the subject of aspartame, employed by a major university in Canada:

Visavis wrote:

Hello,

As the owner of a small business, I am also a 'layperson' student of several unrelated subjects out of personal interest. One such subject is general health, and specifically aspartame and its effects on the human.

I noticed (on the university website) that this is a focused area of your studies, and thought to contact you as one seeking expert opinion. I understand your mandate is probably not to deal with members of the public looking for more information, but would be very appreciative of your opinion.

Question: which side of the aspartame debate is generally more correct - that it is benign, or that it is harmful to the human body? If it is harmful, in what ways is it so? Is there any specific sources (online or books), that you may refer me to, for greater understanding?

Thank you for your time! I hope you can help point me in the right direction.

And his expert response:

a university scholar and expert on aspartme wrote:

Thank you for your interest in my research.

My position on aspartame, based on the academic research (including my own as I have published two multi-experiment papers on it), is that aspartame is relatively benign. Though any product may be aversive in large enough amounts or for a select group of individuals (even mother's milk is harmful to some), research indicates that aspartame is relatively safe. This product has been VERY intensively studied. Aspartame may not contribute to weight loss (weight gain is more than caloric intake and caloric expenditure) though it will not cause tooth decay either.

A comprehensive evaluation of aspartame is:

The Clinical Assessment of a Food Additive: Assessment of Aspartame, edited by Tschanz, Buthcko, Stargel & Kotsonis, CRC Press, 1996.

Though this review is supported by the NutraSweet Company, it is fair and accurate. The information on the internet is often unreliable and not substantiated.

I hope this helps.

best,

He admits the major study on the subject is commissioned by NutraSweet...! And apparently this is acceptable practice. Secondarily, the strong implication is that all contrary info you'll find on the internet is conspiratorial bunk.

Some people just make me shake my head. I guess it's the system. As a university scholar, he's employed and financed by massive cartels that want to dumb down the people.

I know this has been covered, but any other 'expert' opinions on the subject, or suggestions for response, would be appreciated in this forum. If anyone wants to take a crack at this guy, let me know.
