It mentions the oil aspect to DST, but not the part about businesses being able to stay open later, and people shopping in urban areas.
You just know that the U.S. is in trouble when they're coming up with stuff like this to stimulate the economy. !! The U.S. 25, 30 years ago would never have had to dream up schemes to stimulate people to shop, let alone worry about saving oil. It's a changed world, and a completely different country we're living in now.
]]> Yes, it is quite a shocking comparison how different Americans are versus other cultures. When I came back to the States I was shocked again by all the rushing around, the tense faces, the ignoring of children and the elderly. And now I can never go into a supermarket (let alone malls, which I do my best to avoid)without a sense of how too much we have here, and of how little we are grateful for this excess of stuff of all kinds.

Yes, I see the same thing. I work at a hotel now and woo...let me tell you. I'm not so shocked I guess at how miserable so many people are that I deal with, I guess it's understandable in this culture and reality. But what shocks me is how rude and miserable they are to others. How quick they are to pass it along to those around them like a virus, trying to bring everybody else down. Like you pointed out.......these people have it all. So in a way they don't have a RIGHT to be that miserable. There's something inherantly wrong about how mean, nasty, unhappy and miserable they are despite being surrounded by so much. This is something that one of the Russian girls specifically mentioned to me. To paraphrase what she wrote: (this is near exact of what she said) "In our country, we are born naked. We have nothing. We will never get anything, we know that. We will never have money. Life is a struggle for us. But you...in America, you have everything. You have anything you want, all the time...." She went on to explain that this is the cause for that fundamental difference in Americans versus much of the rest of the world.
It's amazing though, for a country that has it all, how miserable everybody is. Obviously something's missing. It's not hard to figure out what.
]]>So with that in mind, we got to talking about this whole thing here on my end, which led to "The Creation of the American Monster." How did this American Monster get created? What went wrong in America, and when did it start to happen? In a nutshell, "They" set America up to be the land of opportunity, and got everybody nice and comfy with the idea of the great American Dream. People had the opportunity to have EVERYTHING. Instantaneous gratification. They got everybody so used to having an exceess of anything their heart's desired, like little spoiled babies, endlessly consuming and spending and acquiring. Then.............they pulled the rug out from under everybody. Manufactured recessions, companies packing up and shipping operations to 3rd world countries, the loss of manufacturing jobs, lay offs, increase in home prices, gasoline prices, and the endless rising cost of living in general.
And instead of Americans cutting back on their excess consumption and materialistic ways and *adjusting* themselves to these newfound economic ways......... they instead tried harder to keep up to the same level they were at in the past! Get ANOTHER job, and ANOTHER job, work round the clock, rack up that money, at the expense of EVERYTHING else. Gotta keep up with the Jones', gotta get that new SUV, buy that big house no matter what the cost. Gotta have this, gotta have that....nevermind that they never have time or energy to enjoy the stuff. Nevermind that they're acting like a gerbil in a wheel, and the wheel's speed is increasing...faster....faster...faster....
It's nuts. The American Monster.
