Of course, everyone's code of morality is going to differ based on their own opinions, which are in turn based on personal experiences, feelings, or logic. That's just a part of human nature. Personally, I find it honorable and noble to seek to protect life, and to base your morality on such. Life is a precious, beautiful thing. But ultimately, these are just our opinions. Just as there's no right or wrong, there's no right or wrong morality system! The universe holds no prejudices or opinions of its own. There's no universal authority which seeks to protect planetary ecosystems from destruction by meteors. The universe just does it does. It just is.

Like I said to 3,7,127, not everything is black and white. There's a lot of gray area. Every situation has different circumstances, so each situation needs its own independent assessment. Let me use your examples of thievery and murder: For one, I don't view property ownership as a valid concept. I don't believe things can be owned, by anyone. So thievery, to me, is just a human invention. However, someone may take something that you need to use or wish to use. In our society, we assume people either need or want all the things that they own. But this isn't necessarily the case (think of all the junk in your parents' basement ). Suppose I need something, such as food, that someone else owns, more than they need it? See, nothing is black and white, and each scenario has its own unique circumstances. To me it's more a matter of free will and, in the end, allowing the greatest freedom for yourself and others, without violating one another's free will. And as you can see, even this is a subjective viewpoint. I highly doubt 4D STS entities tend to respect the free will of others when making a decision and taking action.

Consider also, murder. You may say, I'll never kill anyone or anything. But suppose someone who's suffering from horrible physical pain asks you to end their life, in order to end their suffering? In this case their will is to die, and you can serve their will by assisting them. You may never thought it was possible to both hurt someone and help them at the same time, but in some cases these apparent contradictions may exist. Again, this is a gray area that goes against common law condemning murder.

The whole matter of morality, and making the "right" choice, is obviously a very delicate and complicated subject, which is why I stress the importance of not making black/white blanket judgements.

"All there is, is lessons."

I have found that a well-trained reasoning mind is a very important tool in the arsenal of any spirit. I agree with the quotes from Aya from a purely spiritual context, though I think in our 3D incarnations, for lack of a better term, that a sharp mind is something that is worth striving for.

seeker wrote:

Hey morningsun. I'm somewhat familiar with Ayn Rand's view, and I've seen similar statements arguing that an objective morality stems from the survival of humanity or life itself. However, I think that's a big assumption. We aren't in a position to say that the protection or survival of life is moral, as much as that may seem "obvious" to some people. Such a position can only stem from our own desire or instinct for survival, which is subjective. Thus that view of morality is... subjective.

I suppose you could make the argument that ANY code of ethics, morarity, philosophy or spirituality is subjective in some way. But I think the core of Rand's argument is that we have a right to live ... and morality can thus be logically derived from that initial principle based on objective criteria. Now, if you reject that initial idea, then there's no point in debating subsequent details of the philosophy.

From a larger, universal view, perhaps there is no morality, and everything just is, as suggested by the Story Waters quotes Andy posted. However, everything I know in my mind, and, more importantly, everything I feel in my core of being, tells me that simply by virtue of being alive, we have a right to protect that life, doing whatever is necessary is sustain and secure it. All of our instincts, such as hunger, thirst, fear, and sex are all derived from the fundamental, intrinsic need of living things to survive. If we don't hold survival as the prime objective, than I don't see how there could be ANY morality of any sort... but then again if that's the case, then we shouldn't worry about morality anyway, and might as well just blow our brains out right now ... why bother living if survival is not valued anyway?

seeker wrote:

I'd be willing to have a friendly civilized debate about this if you'd like. There are a lot of holes to poke in Rand's writings. For example, in this case, Rand says that morality is based on man's nature. But it's our nature to get jealous and seek revenge. Is this moral then?

No doubt, I'm sure there are holes to pick. I would suggest, though, that our nature as creatures with the capacity for rational thought allows us each the control of our thoughts, emotions and actions. And I disagree that seeking revenge is in our nature; I think to "seek revenge" presupposes a rational mind, a mind which can make judgements and thus be bound by the concept of morality. Therefore, a morality based on survival will have to recognize the rights of others to survive as well, so I think revenge fails to meet the requirements of morality.

I'll offer a concrete example of how this would apply in practice. A real criminal, say a thief or murderer, obviously needs to be jailed. But, if "revenge" is not moral, then on what basis could he be put in jail? The correct way to view this would be to recognize that a murderer is a direct threat to the lives of others and therefore can be restrained from the activity of killing, for the protection of others. A thief or any sort would also represent a threat to the survival of others, but in an indirect manner. Since the right to life must include the right to seek out and secure the means of survival, property rights must exist, the primary ones being food, water, and shelter. Without protection of these, we'd have chaos and gang warfare, with powerful groups fighting for control of resources. Therefore, restraining thievery in all forms is equally a moral action.

So, I think morality is both a valid concept and a necessary one, if we respect each other's right to exist.

There's a book called The Messiah Seed by Story Waters which I read quite recently and it's become one of my favourite spiritual books. Each page is a different 'seed' and I think the author claims all the information was channeled from his higher self. Anyway there's two seeds that I think are quite relevant to this thread.

Story Waters wrote:

Messiah Seed 37
Right and Wrong

Messiah, free your Self from the concept of right and wrong and the more subtle, insidious concept of better and worse. Know that the idea of right and wrong is not something intrinsic to your reality but is, instead, something that you overlay onto your perception of it.

When reality presents you with a choice, and you are not clear on which road to take, do not get caught up in believing that there must be a right and a wrong path. Free your Self from the
idea that one decision will be better than the other. To think in such terms is to create a reality where you are in jeopardy; where choices are tests and, depending on your answer, you will be led to either a good or a bad consequence. Realize that this is not how it needs to be. It is only you that makes it feel like this when you assign labels of right and wrong to your choices. Know that to free your Self from this is to exist in a reality that is a rose without thorns. Reality is not, by its nature, a negative experience. Know that you assign meaning to reality and not the other way around.

When you are faced with a choice that you find difficult, think of all options as leading to positive outcomes. Imagine all outcomes as joyful, see how they are different, and select whichever one you want based upon the feeling in your heart and not upon the logic of your mind. Once you decide, feel joy and confidence in your decision and, thereby, do not give your power away to doubt or fear of your decision. Know that there is no decision that can either save or damn you. In a world without the belief in good and evil, there is neither salvation nor damnation, there is only being.

Allow your faith in your state of being to free you from the need to judge your Self or the choices that you make. Know that there is no such thing as a mistake. Feel totally free in the consideration of all options presented by your choices. You are totally free. Your will would not be truly free if wrong existed. Know you have free will.

Messiah Seed 52
All

Messiah, know that the mass shared dream can only be realized by your own realization and living of your soul dream. This is the case, no matter what your soul dream is, even if on the surface it appears that your dream is at odds with the mass. Realize that your dream fits perfectly into the mass dream. As you start to live your dream, so you will start to see its part in the overall harmony and motion of the All. You are harmonious with the All, whether you can see it or not.

Know that even those that appear to be purely of service to themselves are being of service to the All. The distinction of service to Self and service to others is an illusion. All service is service to the All. All action is an action for the All. All love is love for the All. All hate is hate for the All. All all is for the All.

To see this is to see that you are free and in a state of limitlessness. To see this is to be without restriction. To see this is to be free from fear. It is to know that all action is right action. Let go of the 'what ifs' for they are hypothetical projections and not reality. Look at your now. Look at the choices on your plate in this moment and know that you can make whatever decisions you want. Realize that, whatever you decide, will be perfect for All and not just for you. Embrace this freedom and know that, even if at this point you are not yet ready to act, then that is right action also.

Realize that just as the deepest desires stem from the desire for limitlessness, so the root of all fear is fear of freedom. In limitlessness there is no plan, no God to rule over you; no necessity for consistency and no direction that is best to follow. There is only your will, and from your will you form all that you experience. Trust your Self to give your Self love and know that all will be loved by that love; all will be freer as a result of your freedom.

Anyway I definitely recommend obtaining a copy of Messiah Seed. I think it's now available from Amazon or you can do what I did and order a signed copy from his website http://www.limitlessness.com

Andy

Since there can be no objective morality, there's no right or wrong, no good or evil. There's simply choices, and consequences. "You will do what you will do." However, like a few already mentioned, there is the perspective that, honoring the free will of all is "good" and not honoring free will is "bad." These are also known as STO and STS, respectively. But there's so much gray area that it's really best not to overanalyze this stuff. There are some situations where no one's free will seems to be affected one way or the other.

You just have to do what comes natural to you. Just follow your "heart" and pay attention to your feelings of empathy. My own personal ethics are based on the "golden rule" ie: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This rule tends to work as a good guideline because justification for your own behavior can only come from your own knowledge and experience.

I think the most important thing to remember, when it comes to morality or ethics, is that every situation is different, and every scenario has different circumstances. For that reason it's a bit short-sighted to lay out rules for yourself and say, "I won't ever do such and such." You MAY need to do such and such one day when suddenly it's feels like the best choice at that moment.
