Hmm, I don't feel the nihilism you're describing as anything to do with what the author promotes. Personally, the more I get in touch and align with my soul / higher self / destiny, the more meaningful my experiences become. When I look back in time, I feel that I was mostly drifting aimlessly, using my mind / social conditionning (which includes even the most "alternative" "lifestyles") to decide where to go next. Clarity of mind is of course not permanent, but I feel it's the most useful quality to seek in these times.

I think one can also look for the meaning oneself while at the same time finding part of that because of what others do or say without giving up the responsibility of finding and living this purpose in life and becoming to dependent on the messenger or mantra.

This is largely a happy fallacy, the problem being one of your own interpretation of what someone is saying, versus the reality of whatever they are really attempting to communicate. This is why we have so many different religions, and so many divisions within them. It's like the Bill Clinton defense: "What do you mean by the word 'is'?" Sure, perhaps parts and pieces of what they say will be generally understandable enough to provide impetus, but at some point these training wheels, as it were, have to be removed.

Don't look to anyone else to provide you with answers about your life. Look for them yourself

This "finding your purpose" part of his life, seems to be part of his journey now ... and of course it's a huge button for lots of people who know that there must be more than just a 6 pack or in his case a bottle of Dom Perignon ...

He found some answers for himself - my guess is that many/most of us have found similar answers -- about our purpose which could very well be as simple yet complex as living life and learning.

Thanks for doing some research and finding these links.  I've spent a most enjoyable morning going through Mark's site, his family portraits and remembering my own journeys to South Africa, Scotland and the UK.  He seems very forthright and personally I think his "way" to find ones purpose would work.  Of course he comes off quite salesman like ... his father was quite a follower of Dale Carnegie and Mark's CV (resume) is pretty impressive.  Doesn't make him any less of a seeker though ... to my mind.  He has found his own happiness and wants to share it.  Seems honest and caring.

Conspiratorial History, like the Meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything can indeed be selling points.
Still I find myself a bit curious to his little booklet and his experiences. He has setup a webforum where you can read his musings on life.

Some quotes in his forum:

I don't know the man, but to me it sounds as if he's sincere and has had a profound experience.

I was told, quote,

That was it.   Said in a very matter of fact, amused way.   Such a C's type answer    and it caught me offguard.  I wasn't expecting that.  I was expecting a solid, concrete direct answer, some definitive "thing" that I was here to do.  I didn't get the answer I was looking for at all.  I got something that made me think, but when I did, I realized it made sense.

Different timelines accomplish different things.   There is no set reason for us being here.   Sure, maybe we had some general outline or something when we incarnated, but the fact is, things change.  Nothing is usually set in stone.   For every choice you make, there's the choice you didn't make, the "other timeline".    That other timeline may very well allign you with a new batch of people and set you off and running down an entirely different path.  The more you move around in life, the more jobs you have, the less stagnant you are, then that's the more timelines you create and the more opportunities that open up.   Suddenly, that one definitive reason or "purpose" for being here fades further and further away with every new timeline branch.

I'm sure on every timeline I have an affiliation for writing, but it manifested in different ways depending on what my life circumstances are in those timelines.  In some the writing thing is probably more prominant than others.   In other timelines I may have persued interests that I'm not doing in this timeline, depending on where life took me on those timelines.  I'm probably not a conspiracy theorist in EVERY timeline!   

You get the idea.   There is no one set reason for us being here, some definitive concrete purpose.    We come here with a general idea of what we'd like to learn and accomplish, then we're off and running and after that, anything goes.    Anything can happen.   Just go with it, be flexible.   Don't make yourself distraught thinking there's this "ONE THING!!" you're "SUPPOSED!!" to be doing and that if you don't figure out what it is, you're missing out on it and being a flop.  Personally, I think if anybody is out there promoting that then they are pushing bunk.   It doesn't make any sense, not when you understand the concept of multiple parallel timelines, which is a quantum physics concept and which most people have never heard of.
