Re: Personal Experience with Cash Free Coersion.....

Its very disturbing to read your posts, so let me enlighten you a little on the situation in Scandinavia.

It is impossible to get paid by means of a paycheck, your salary goes straight into your bank-account. It has been like this for at least 10 years now... A growing number of banks are shutting down their branch offices, offering only online banking, and the only way you can get to your money, is through your VISA/debit-card. A new system of credit rating on a national basis, tracks your financial stability over time, monitoring i.e. how much taxes you pay, what your income is, how many times you've moved (If you move frequently, your credit goes down the drain), how many second notices you have recieved and the list goes on. You end up with a rating on a scale decided by the biggest credit-risk companies, and if you're below a certain threshold, you can't loan money for a home, new car, get a credit card etc. Now, this is hardly of any concern to me, as I rent a small apartement, don't own a car (or a drivers license for that matter), and I don't need/want credit cards. But I think it's symptomatic of a deep urge for massive control by the moneymaking-powers-that-be.

My library card is now electronic, registering all loans in a central database somewhere, which is frustrating because someone can monitor what books I've read. I take the bus almost daily, and they're replacing the old stamp-based monthly commute-cards with electronic ones. This means that I will have to swipe that card every time I get on a bus, silently registering my every move...

A new danish company are in the process of testing a new system that monitors where you are when attending festival etc. (i.e. the famous Roskilde Festival) by tapping into the Bluetooth chipset embedded in most cellphones.

Previously, you could buy pre-paid cellphone-subscriptions that didn't require registration, this offer has been outlawed by the norwegian government, as they now require you to register your address with the phone-company (and they verify that the address corresponds to the one linked to your social security number).

As a resident of a country under the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, I can travel to the U.S without getting a visa, but if I do, I am required to register my fingerprints, as well as having my picture taken, on arrival. I also have to waive any right to object, should I be refused entry for some reason (like if the officer on duty has a bad day).

Living off the grid will become increasingly difficult in the coming years, and although I fell relatively safe in this corner of the world, the prospect of surrendering more and more freedom is truly alarming.

Re: Personal Experience with Cash Free Coersion.....

I've never had a personal experience, but I saw a commercial for a credit card company (Visa Check Card?) that portrayed cash as out of harmony.  The ad had music in the background, and everyone in a store has moving about in a fast, organized, choreographed manner in time to the music.  Everyone who goes to the register slides a credit card.  Then a man gets to the register and pulls out cash.  The music stops, everyone stares, and the clerk frowns.  Then the announcer comes on and says some crap about how life is easier with a credit/debit card.

Re: Personal Experience with Cash Free Coersion.....

Same here, recently saw a commercial, aimed at independant young woman "entering the world" and how Plastic Cards, Internet Online Banking, Cellphone linkage to your account etc. was all to "help you be free", and survive in this economy. (Hah! lol)

Re: Personal Experience with Cash Free Coersion.....

Perhaps more financial education is in order. Schools don't teach kids much about this. What can we do to alleviate the situation?

WFO World Financial Group offers free financial education to all levels of society. Free consultations. They of course offer financial investments (Like Life Insurance Policies, Mutual Funds, etc...) from their affiliates.

Good strategy to slow down the process, lyra. smile

There are many other issues involving elimination of bank notes.

For example: I was getting fuel the other day and all I had was a $100, but I only put $20 worth of fuel in the tank (as always, hoping that the prices will drop the next time I fuel up).  The clerk tells me "We don't accept $100 bills!".  I said : "What??  Let me ask you a question... Is this $100 bill called money?"  the clerk aswered: "Yes" I immediately followed by "Then you better accept this note or the company will have a lawsuit on their hands!!".  Without further due the $100 was accepted with a final statement from the clerk "I shouldn't do this, but this time I'll make an exception".  I just gave the clerk an ironic smile and said "I'll see you next time."

Peace, PhiConcept.

Re: Personal Experience with Cash Free Coersion.....

PhiConcept, just pay attention the next time you fill up at that station whether or not they add a sign at the pump saying "we do not accept $100 bills" that you could reasonably read before pumping gas.  AFAIK that's been the deciding factor in previous precedents of that kind of dispute, so if between now and then they add a disclaimer on the pump, be cautious.

Re: Personal Experience with Cash Free Coersion.....

My mom has been receiving back child support from my dad for the past few years. She would recieve a check every week, and was able to cash it at the store or bank. But about 3 months ago they sent her a letter telling her that they were going to be switching over to a Visa debit/credit card. She didn't have any option to decline. They just sent her the card and now the money it just deposited onto it once a week. SHe can use it to withdraw cash, but still has to use the card.
Also, when I was younger, I worked somewhere that offered that whole bit about no paycheck, but either direct deposit or visa card issued by the bank of america. Basically they'd open an account for me with that bank, and I'd get my check deposited there and I'd have a handy new debit card to use. So I agreed. Well, I didnt stay with that employer for long, my boss was insane, and after I quit I was wondering if I could still use that "account" I supposedly had with the bank of america. They had never really given me any info on the account, like how to put more money into it if I wanted. So I tried the customer service number on the back of the card. Well, it took 50 cents everytime you called that number, and I think I only had something like 75 cents left. It was all automated, and I got no help for my question. Since I couldn't call again, I went to a local branch office to talk to actual people. They tried to look up my account number but it did not exsist in their system. They had never heard of this type of account. They asked a supervisor, still nobody could help me. So I gave up, and have never had a bank account since. I still get account statements for that card though. I cant even call to cancel it. So stupid.
