Enigma

The Cross of Changes

If you understand or if you don’t
If you believe or if you doubt
There’s a universal justice
And the eyes of truth
Are always watching you.

Last 3 pages of, “Missing in Action"  by Peter David:

                                      Somewhere...

The father and son sit on a dock at the edge of a vast cosmic river that exists through many realms of time and space. Once, millennia ago, this river overran its borders, carving a moment of cosmic memory so deep that its the reason every known civilization - even those on desert worlds - has a flood story buried in its mythology.
"Worlds within worlds, my boy,"  the father says archly to the son. "That’s what its all about. " He dangles his fishing line in the river; trying to pull something in. "Worlds within worlds."
"What do you mean, Father," asks the boy.
"What do I mean" The father makes a face of disgust. "Now, what sort of omniscient being are you going to grow up to become if you have to ask questions such as those. "
"Then how am I going to learn"
"By observing, " he says with his trademark petulance. "If I were just going to answer questions, we could have both stayed in the Continuum."
"All right," the boy says cautiously. "Then. ..what do you want me to observer"
"Well...lets see." He studies the water thoughtfully, then points. "See that jellyfish over there"
"Yes."

"I'm going to dangle my line toward it. And you reach out and sense the thoughts inside."
"The thoughts of the jellyfish?"
"No, son. The thoughts of what’s inside the jellyfish."
Without fully understanding the instruction, the boy does as he is told. He probes a few moments with no results, and he is about to admit his frustration when suddenly he perceives it.
There is a race there. An entire race. ..no, an entire universe. Or a subsection of a universe. The race calls itself the Bolgar. It lives in its sphere in triumph. It believes itself to be the ultimate power in its universe. Perhaps in the multiverse. It has recently triumphed over its greatest enemy. It is confident in its manifest destiny. In fact, when the time is right, it intends to return to another universe it has just left and endeavor to conquer it. Nothing can stop it. Nothing can deter it. They are conquerors. They are supreme. They are like unto gods.
"You sense it?" his father asks. "Yes."
"Is not its arrogance monumental?"
"It’s certainly deserving of punishment." The boy smiles.
"I couldn't agree more. It’s never a good idea," says his father "to become too full of yourself "
His hook snags the jellyfish and he reels it in. And within the universe inside the jellyfish, the world of the Bolgar is ripped apart. The entire race screams as one, its arrogance replaced by terror and supplication and complete lack of comprehension as to what is happening. It doesn't even have words to frame what is transpiring.
The jellyfish is yanked out of the water; or at least what passes for water in the universal miasma. The moment it hits the air it begins to shrivel and fall apart. The father allows it to land splat on the pier next to it. All the toxins that the jellyfish contain that render it

so lethal to sea life mean absolutely nothing on dry land. There, in the heat of day, under the punishing light of the sun, the jellyfish and the universe contained within it crumble and die.
"Look upon my works, O ye mighty, and despair," intones the father, smiling down at the remains of the masters of their sphere. Then Q casts his line back out into the water and says, "Let’s see who else could stand to learn a lesson or two..."

Nice, love the "Q" and Continuum references; Star Trek was light-years ahead of their time.

Sounds like a good book as well, thanks!

Ender's Game

Ender is promoted to command of his own army years earlier than usual, setting him up for resentment from his peers and pushing his abilities to the limit (intentionally). He is given command of the re-established Dragon Army, which had never won a third of its battles and was disbanded. Though dealing with fresh recruits, including the precocious Bean who is even smaller (and much smarter) than Ender himself was, Ender trains Dragon Army in unorthodox ways: he abolishes school-standard formations as they take a long time to learn and are highly inflexible, divides his army into five toons of eight instead of four of ten, and encourages each toon to act independently and take initiative during combat. Despite having only 3 weeks to train instead of the standard 3 months before their first battle, Dragon Army completely annihilates their first opponent with almost no casualties. After that, Dragon Army never loses a battle, despite engagements that are (deliberately) weighted against them.

After these three months spent in self-contemplation, Ender returns and is promoted to Command School, almost six years early, to learn to combat the Buggers in space instead of being restricted to the more abstract training games. He is taught by Mazer Rackham, the genius behind the previous human success against the buggers, and the first man to realize that the Formics are actually a hive mind (see group mind (science fiction)). There has been no way of communicating with the buggers, and they have shown no inclination to spare humanity their wrath; thus, plans for an invasion have been underway, and it is the command of this invasion that Ender is being trained for. Fortunately, he will be augmented by a cadre of his best friends (and the best commanders) from Battle School, including Alai, Petra, Dink, and Bean; Ender assigns them to individual flights or squadrons of ships while he remains in overall charge.

Once the team has meshed, the training begins, this time against Mazer Rackham. Ender and his ‘dream team’ begin to fight ever-more-challenging battles, in which his team must frequently fight with outmoded hardware, and the enemy frequently outnumbers them and quickly learns to adapt to Ender's tactics—even the ones that won yesterday's battle. Ender also begins to be plagued by mysterious nightmares which interrupt his sleep. Fatigued in mind and body, his team slowly succumbing to exhaustion, Ender begins to lose hope.

In Ender's final exam before graduating from Command School, he and his team find themselves in possession of a small fleet, approaching a planet that is literally swarming with Bugger ships, outnumbering his own force a thousand to one. Ender, by now, has had enough of being manipulated by the adults, and decides to flunk out of Command School—a true victory. He duplicates his final battle at Battle School and uses the Molecular Disruption Device to destroy the planet around which the Bugger fleet is orbiting (taking the surrounding fleet with it), demonstrating that he is far too ruthless to be trusted with command of an actual battle fleet.

However, when the simulation ends, Ender discovers that the ‘audience’ watching his ‘final exam’ is now in jubilation and delight. Rackham and Graff tell Ender that he has not been playing a game, and had never played against Rackham, but instead has been commanding real ships across interstellar distances; this task was made possible via the ansible, a form of instantaneous communication making use of Philotic Energy. This technology was discovered following the Second Bugger War, as the method of telepathic communication the Buggers used was reverse engineered. He has just commanded the fleet attacking the Buggers' home planet, and destroyed the entire race once and for all.

[center]Pressed Rat And Warthog
by Ginger Baker and Mike Taylor

Pressed rat and warthog have closed down their shop.
They didn't want to; 'twas all they had got.
Selling atonal apples, amplified heat,
And pressed rat's collection of dog legs and feet.

Sadly they left, telling no one goodbye.
Pressed rat wore red jodhpurs, warthog a striped tie.
Between them, they carried a three-legged sack,
Went straight round the corner and never came back.

Pressed rat and warthog have closed down their shop.
The bad captain madman had told them to stop
Selling atonal apples, amplified heat,
And pressed rat's collection of dog legs and feet.

The bad captain madman had ordered their fate.
He laughed and stomped off with a nautical gate.
The gate turned into a deroga tree
And his pegleg got woodworm and broke into three.

Pressed rat and warthog have closed down their shop.
They didn't want to; 'twas all they had got.
Selling atonal apples, amplified heat,
And pressed rat's collection of dog legs and feet.
