As a kid/teenager I really liked pro-wrestling.  My last name is Savage.  There was a popular wrestler named "Macho Man" Randy Savage.  His real last name is Poffo.  The last names were reversed and it became a nickname for me among some friends of mine and it kinda stuck.  Kinda funny since I'm not exactly the most macho of men.

On IRC #noblerealms I am sometimes seen as Poffo137 if Poffo is already taken (probably by some wrestling geek).  137 represent the three "number laws" of creation that I know of.  The law of 1 (unity), law of 3 forces, and the law of 7 (the 7 steps within the so-called octave of creation, 7 is the is the totality of the finite illusion created from and resulting in infinity, 7 colours, 7 notes, 7 densities, blah blah blah). These numbers come up together a lot in my life.  1+3+7=11, and 11 could be seen as the complete cycle (10) plus 1.

* side note:  I just noticed that it was 3:17 when I looked at the clock...

Hey Poffo you could always go with "Genius" )I had a friend that was crazy about WWF etc when I was in middle and part of high school so I no some of the soap opera) The Genius was Savages brother He was first leaping lanny Poffo, but then did steroids, bulked up and became "The Genius".

That's so funny - SiriArc is in Colorado I think, Pictus is in Brazil, Treehugger and her daughter are in Virginia - it was a global effort, but in the end, Treehugger got her avatar.  big_smile

I got mine from the Crabwood crop circle message (the alien head holding the disk). "Beware the bearers of false gifts and broken promises. We oppose deception. There is much pain but still time. There is good out there. Believe."

Marcus I liked your musings about name meanings and how they fit into our personalities or potential down the line.  I did research into both the mythological and constellation meaning/significance of 'lyra' yesterday after reading your post and found out some interesting things.  The lyre is a musical instrument, I guess with Greek origins, originally supposedly fashioned out of strings on a turtle shell.  The day that I read that I'd had a dream before waking about saving a screaming terrorized turtle from the clutches of an evil spider.  !   Weird, I know.  So that was kind of a synch.  There were other minor, sort of interesting connections that came up after I did a little digging into the name thing, inspired by your post.

I think that is so interesting!  Also I think that between your handle and your dream - it puts an interesting spin on Dream Symbolism.  I mean who knows - it may not even be connected.  It is an interesting sync nonetheless.

I think I read it on your site at some point where you mention about using dream symbolism interpretation in the waking world.  Maybe our names or taken names factor into that as well.  With taken names (such as handles) I guess you would also have to factor in the situation and place we were in when we decided upon them.

Names are an interesting thing.  My middle name for instance is....Regan.  I totally hate it, always have since I was really little, and probably always will.  I mean, I dislike this name so much that for most of my life I wouldn't even tell people what it was when they asked (!!!!!!) like, embarassed by it, and I seriously contemplated going about getting it changed.  For starters, my mom got it from The Exorcist.  That was in the theaters in 1974 when she was pregnant with me, and she liked it because it was Irish. She wanted me to have a mediterranean first name, for the Italian in me from my dad's side, and an Irish middle name, since she's Scotch Irish.   I've never encountered anybody who thought Regan was a bad name, in fact, many people have thought it was really cool.  To which I'm like, "uhh....really?  ugh."  Ptooey ptooey!  big_smile  Seriously. As a child of the 80's I was in grade school during the reign of President Reagan, so of course all the kids were like, "Regan?  ahahaha!  President REAGAN!  ahahahahaha!  ahahahahaha! President REAGAN!"  You know how little kids are, really dumb senses of humor.  hmm  So that probably played a HUGE role in my dislike for the name, now that I think about it.   The first time I ever told somebody my middle name, when I was 6, I had no hangups about it.  After getting laughed at about it...then having the boy tell everybody else within ear shot...I think that like, traumatized me or something.  big_smile   haha  That's probably what started it all.   If it had been President Bush Sr. in office while I was in school, then there never would have been "President Reagan!" to compare it to.   In the baby books, Regan often times isn't even listed in the girls section, only the boys, so, that reinforced the problem as well.

So yeah, several years ago I was going through a baby names book and for fun, decided to pick a new middle name for myself.  I got to "Selene" and thought that was really cool, even though it doesn't mesh well phonetically with Carissa.   Selene turns out is Greek, and was the Moon Goddess in mythology.  Well, weird synch.....Tom's original middle name that he had at birth (he now has a different middle and last name) was Sin.   Sin, as in, the Babylonian moon God.   What a trip!  So if he still had his original middle name, and I changed my original middle name to the one that jumped out at me in the baby names book, then we'd be the Moon God and Goddess!  haha  I don't know, I thought that was cool.

Re: So, what does your NR handle name mean anyway?

I think it was 1990 or 1991 when I was home with a flu-like thing, but I was supposed to be working on a brochure for a client of mine. I wasn't feeling very inspired but was seeking inward for inspiration nonetheless, and just doodling on a piece of a paper, wondering what would be a good logo for this client's business.

I ended up doodling this image:  http://sowelu.seibernet.com/sslogo4.JPG

...and immediately knew it was "me", not a logo for my client. Not that it was for me, but that it was a graphic depiction of "me" in some way (today I might call it my energy signature. Back then I had no words for the "me" feeling). If you've ever caught your image in passing, say in a reflecting window of a building on a city street, and felt that sense of seeing yourself in a different light, it was kind of like that. It was a huge feeling for me to suddenly "recognize myself" differently.

The next day I went with my roommate to a new agey bookstore and meandered around looking at all these things I was unfamiliar with (not very new agey myself. Stones, incense, systems of knowledge... none of this was "my thing", but my roommate was getting into it so I went along for fun). I seemed to feel a bit of intrigue when I saw Ralph Blum's "The Book of Runes", so I picked it up to look at and just opened the book to a page. There it was, lo and behold, a symbol I immediately recognized... the first "S" in that logo image above which I had just drawn the day before, which is the symbol for "Sowelu". I had never even heard of the Runes before, but man... what a feeling!! Again I had a huge feeling inside, like the universe was whispering to me, but I didn't mentally understand anything. I just felt... something really significant was happening.

And in that book's description of the meaning of the Rune, I got an even deeper, awe-inspiring "hit" of recognition. For those who've never read it:

The Book of Runes wrote:

Sowelu stands for wholeness, that which our nature requires. It embodies the impulse toward self-realization and indicates the path you must follow, not from ulterior motives but from the core of your individuality.

Seeking after wholeness is the Spiritual Warrior's quest. And yet what you are striving to become is what, by nature, you already are. Become conscious of your essence and bring it into form, express it in a creative way. A Rune of great power, making life force available to you, Sowelu marks a time for regeneration down to the cellular level.

I just knew, somehow, that this is why I was here, on earth. It was the first time I ever had a feeling of deep recognition of the purpose of my existence. No religion or sacred teachings ever had an impact of any kind on me before. This bit of text, though, hit me like a ton of bricks. In truth, it was an eerie feeling, as though the entire universe was intimately familiar with me... and I knew nothing about myself.

So anyway, I used the logo above as my business logo for a few years, and as soon as I got a computer, I knew "Sowelu" was the name to use for me. It's been with me ever since.
