Topic: Original Wisdom

I just want to recommend a book that I've just finished, which I think is fairly obscure, or at least it used to be before it was republished with a new foreward by Thom Hartmann who is a favourite author of mine.

Anyway the book is called "Original Wisdom : Stories of an Ancient Way of Knowing" by Robert Wolff (no connection with Dr Robert Ghost Wolf, another author).

The book is an account of his experiences with an aboriginal tribe in Malaysia and I have to say it's an incredibly inspiring read. I've put this in the Walking the Walk section because I've no doubt this book will insprire people to simplify their lives and try and live more harmoniously with nature.

I've discovered the book used to be called "What It Is To Be Human" before it was republished as "Original Wisdom" and one of my favourite chapters in the book was called "Learning to be Human Again"

Anyway, the synopsis reads:

"Deep in the mountainous jungle of Malaysia, the aboriginal Sng'oi exist on the edge of extinction, though their way of living may ultimately be the kind of existence that will allow us all to survive. The Sng'oi - pre-industrial, pre-agricultural, semi nomadic - live without cars or mobile phones, without clocks or schedules in a lush green place where worry and hurry, competition and suspicion are not known. Yet these indigenous peoples - as do many other aboriginal groups - possess an acute and uncanny sense of the energies, emotions and intentions of their place and the living beings who populate it and trustingly follow this intuition, using it to make decisions about their actions each day.

Psychologist, Robert Wolff, lived with the Sng'oi, learned their language, shared their food, slept in their huts and came to love and admire these people who respect silence, trust time to heal and reveal, and live entirely in the present with a sense of joy. Even more, he came to recognise the depth of our alienation from these basic qualities of life. Much more than a document of a disappearing people, ORIGINAL WISDOM holds a mirror to our own existence, allowing us to see how far we have wandered from the ways of the intuitive and trusting Sng'oi and challenges us, in our fragmented world, to discover this humanity within ourselves."

Re: Original Wisdom

Soounds brilliant. These native people are showing us how we
could also be in touch with Nature and with our own nature, if
we lived more as they did.  I know McKenna wrote a book titled "The Archaic
Revival", which from what I've read about it,  makes the point that we need to get back to that state of conciousness.   Does Wolff's book mention McKenna at all?

If you want to share more about that chapter "Learning To Be Human Again", I'd be interested.

I'd also like more about that chapter!
